To be perfectly honest, as big and powerful as Aerodactyl was, using him in an actual serious battle, would have usually been a horrible move.
Especially this one in particular.
Out of the three long range attacks Aerodactyl has, one is horrible against dragon types, another takes up a lot of energy to use and would typically tire a normal pokemon out and the third while super effective against flying types, wasn't going to do much as an opening move.

Luckily for us, the Pokemon Centre's tended to come equipped with rather large battlefields for trainers to have practice or even serious battles at.

The forests of Skyrim were ripe with all manner of beasts one always had to be wary of on long trips. Even the pathed roads patrolled by the guardsmen of the holds aren't safe to be honest, never mind the untamed forests.
