This month, I decided to put together the process video for my Roses painting! I got so many replies on that one, including from artists who wanted to implement some of these techniques into their own work. Hopefully this will give some insights!
Here’s some information about the process videos:
It’s been so long since I opened my sketchbook! I felt like my previous sketch pages were very light and lacking some boldness, so for this session I really wanted to create thicker, heavier lines and draw with more confidence. I really struggle with getting the sense of scale right - everything always turns out twice as big as I intend it to - but I just leaned into it this time. Hope you like them!

I was playing around with soft painting techniques for the rose painting I posted earlier this week, and trying to figure out a way to make those soft edges of the petals look really eye-catching. I ended up applying bright, saturated color to the edges and was surprised by how well that worked! So for these drawings, I wanted to take that further and play around with the chromatic aberration eff...

This tutorial is all about line weight! That basically means varying the thickness of your lines in different areas of your drawing to boost movement and expressiveness. If you like creating neat and clean lines, it has lots of helpful tips - but it’s also for those of you who like to just work from rough sketches and keep your lines messy, like me!
Key lessons include:
The technical tricks involved in creating varied lines
How to use lineart to create intent, depth and movement in your sketc...

Ever since launching the Bloom prints collection last week, flowers have been on my mind - and it’s also one of my lifelong quests to try and capture the layered quality of these kinds of round, chunky roses/peonies. I’m just fascinated by them! I had a lot of fun exploring softer, more gentle painting techniques with this one. Hope you like it!

It's time for a new challenge, and this month, I wanted to study tension in anatomy! That's when muscles and tendons are fully tensed, creating a strong sense of energy and intention behind a pose. It's all about conveying strength and intensity! Don't be afraid to exaggerate the skin folds and muscles in order to really push the energy of your studies. As usual, the folders are full of inspiration images and reference to help you on your way!

This month's challenge was on painting clouds! This is a great subject matter to test painting techniques on, and because it doesn't have to be painted so accurately, there's a lot of room for creative freedom. Painting these was really fun, but also challenging: whenever I decided to zoom in and push the detail, I felt like it was losing the sense of energy. I just want a good mix of loose, express...

I’m so excited to share this one with you - it’s a commission that I created for my publisher, 3DTotal! They are moving to a new building, which used to be a pub called the White Hart. June has arrived! This month, we'll be painting clouds together! ☁️ This is a great opportunity to practice expressive and dynamic shapes. Clouds don't have to be painted as accurately as many other things, so we can exaggerate as much as we want! It's also a great subject to practice blending and painterly techniques with. Happy painting! ⛅
