EARLY ACCESS // zoo sketches

Last month, I went to the zoo and did some live sketching of the animals there with a few other artists! The sketches themselves didn’t turn out great - I’m very out of my element when drawing from life - but I wanted to try finalizing these sketches digitally, because even though the details are off on the sketches, I do find the shapes quite interesting. So for these I wanted to keep the original shapes but rework the details and add some color to make the animals more accurate.

I...

EARLY ACCESS // no girl emotes

As you might know from my previous announcements, I’m currently working on putting together a discord server for all my patrons! It’s so complicated, so I’m really glad I have some help in the process (thank you so much Cori!!). One of the tasks on my list was to make some custom emojis, so here are a few that I’ve created! It was difficult to make these in a style that is readable at a really small size, but that also made it really fun at the same time. I haven’t drawn No Girl lik...

UPDATE // new tier & video files

Hello Patrons! At the beginning of this month, I made a post announcing that there will be changes to this Patreon starting in October. For those who missed that post, the main changes will be:

  • The basic tier ($5) will have access to 5 essential tutorials, plus the latest one.
  • There will be a new higher tier. Only this higher tier will get access to the full backlog of tutorials ...

PROCESS VIDEO // ice 02

This is part 2 of the process for my Ice painting! You can find part 1 here. Just like the last video, it’s been sped up 1.5 times - so slightly faster than real time.

In this video, I’m trying to go through the layers established in the rough version and clean them up one by one. I also try to...

PROCESS VIDEO // ice 01

Here’s the process video for the ice painting I posted earlier this month! It’s been sped up 1.5 times, and the entire process took me a bit over 4.5 hours to do. I split it into three parts, so there’s two more videos coming up after this one!

Things to keep in mind while watching this video:

This video starts with the ideation process, which is just where I quic...

UPDATE // new versions of paintings

Before having this patreon, I used to create a painting and then post it as soon as it was done, but now I have a really different workflow: I post it here on patreon first, and then post it on social media the month after. Because of that, I sometimes find that I really want to change something when I see it again!

So for both of these I ended up changing the figure compared to the version that I originally posted here, and also bringing back more elements from older versions of ...

EARLY ACCESS // bloodhound sketches

I’m really enjoying drawing wrinkles and folds, so I had to draw some bloodhounds! For these, I tried do the same as I did with the old man sketch session, which is to avoid drawing the basic shapes first and going straight into the linework instead. The result is that the figures become a little bit skewed, but I like the stylization effect that creates. I’m especially hapy with how the little puppy turned out! Hope you enjoy these :)

TUTORIAL // drawing different body types

It’s time for this month’s tutorial! This one is about drawing different body types, something that was requested a few times over the last year. It covers:

  • How I developed a ‘default body type’ over my artistic development, and how I learned to divert from it to draw different types of characters
  • How to modify basic shapes and proportions to create variety in the body types
  • How to develop a character sketch from a reference photo
  • Where to find v...

EARLY ACCESS // ice

Finally finished this painting that I first created a rough version of back in March! I’ve been stuck in a pattern of over-rendering my paintings lately, so for this one I wanted to take a more minimalistic approach and keep the feel of the original rough version intact without painting over it too much.

One thing that really had a huge impact was copy/pasting a 2022-08-05 07:32:21 +0000 UTC View Post

EARLY ACCESS // barbiecore no girl

I’ve been on a huge nostalgia kick lately, watching a lot of movies from the 80s and 90s and thinking about the music I used to listen to as a kid. I recently saw an article about ‘barbiecore,’ and it got me thinking about how much I loved this style as a kid. I was one of those girly girls who LOVED playing with barbies and anything glittery and pink. The bigger and fluffier their dresses, the better! I now no longer think of myself that way - I wear mostly black - but I still really a...

UPDATE // changes to tutorial access

Hey Patrons! As you know from my last post, I'm going to be making some changes to the patreon structure by adding a new tier. This new tier will be more interactive, with opportunities to share your work, do monthly challenges, and participate in Q&A sessions. I'm still working out the details and plan to announce the specifics of this new tier next month.

However, there's one thing that I wanted to announce further ahead of time. When I first started this patreon, I knew tha...

UPDATE // the last month of summer is here!

Yet another month has passed! Hopefully August won't be as warm as July was, because it is not fun to draw during a brutal heatwave :')

Here's a little review of how this month has gone for me:

MOVING AWAY FROM MY COMFORT ZONE

As an artist, I’m known for how I draw feminine characters. This month I stepped entirely away from that and drew environments, animals, and people from a different age group or type than I usually draw. It’s because I really...

PROCESS VIDEO // fox sketches

Here’s the process video for the fox sketches I posted a few days ago! It’s been sped up to twice the original speed. The original drawing process took me about one and a half hours to do. Here’s the reference I used for these foxes:

As I mentioned in my previous post, I was really focused on keep...

EARLY ACCESS // foxes

It’s been a while since I drew some foxes! I really enjoyed exaggerating the shapes and simplifying the details for these. In order to get this more stylized look with a focus on movement, I had to resist the urge to add detail the way I normally do and really had to force myself to keep things really simple and closer to my initial sketches. This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately in my process: trying to cut out that phase where I finalize my sketch, and going straight f...

EARLY ACCESS // mountains

I felt it was time to dive back into some environments! I still have this goal to find a workflow for landscapes that allows me to really show the sense of scale and volume that I feel when I am there. But I don’t really feel like I’ve found that workflow. I struggled a lot with these - there was this constant tension between wanting to use simple stylized shapes, and wanting to add the detail necessary to give it a majestic feel - and one approach kept weighing down the other. Gotta keep...

EARLY ACCESS // old ladies

Staying in the flow of drawing wrinkles and folds! Here’s a sketchbook page featuring some beautiful ladies with lots of texture and volume in their faces. This was such a soothing sketch session where I just enjoyed the sound of the pencil on the paper and the tactile feedback as I was setting the lines down. These sketches show how much inspiration I’ve been channeling from Eliza Ivanova lately - I love how she cap...

EARLY ACCESS // swim

Finally sat down to finalize a WIP that I had posted back in March! I might make some changes to this one, but for now I have to let it go. Will definitely be doing more water surface paintings in the future since there is so much to learn there!

EARLY ACCESS // old men studies

Some rough digital studies of some older guys! I wanted to break out of my usual subject matter and try something different. I’ve been wanting to capture wrinkles, folds, and volumes more lately so this felt like a good subject to try it on! I’ve also been trying a new approach to lines lately: instead of building up the basic shapes first, I just start drawing the lines straight ahead. It’s a pretty scary process for me since I’m used to building up the basic elements with very light...

TUTORIAL // creating a strong composition

At long last, here it is: a tutorial about composition! This is something I avoided for a long time because I felt like it was such an overwhelmingly broad topic. It’s one of those things that also touches on light, shape, color, pose, and so on. But now that I’ve already managed to make 25 (!!) previous tutorials, I felt like it was time to make this one since it’s supported by enough other resources!

This video covers:

  • Composition in my own art - my main influences a...

EARLY ACCESS // face studies

Some portrait studies! With these I wanted to push myself to capture more planes / details of the face than I normally do. I’m used to drawing smoother skin and putting less focus on all the different textures and lines on the face, so taking this approach requires me to push past my comfort zone a bit. I found it really fun to do though! Might do more portraits like these soon.

UPDATE // summer is officially here!

It's the end of the month once again and summer is in full swing here. We've had a few super hot days already and a LOT of bugs! Here's how this month has gone for me:

In the first two weeks of this month, I was on vacation inItaly. Ever since I made a painting that was based on Seceda in the Italian Alps, I knew that I wanted to go there one day. So we went at the...

QUESTION // do you have issues playing videos here on patreon?

Hello lovely patrons! As you might know, a few months ago all of my video content was migrated to the Patreon platform. However, many of you have reported video playback issues, specifically one where the video stops playing a few minutes in and can't resume playing anymore after that. It sounds incredibly frustrating!

I've been reporting these issues to the Patreon staff, because the tool is in ...

EARLY ACCESS // no girl

It’s been a year since I last created some sketches of my OC No Girl, and I felt like drawing her again! I’m having fun with this blocky colorful style I’ve been using more and more lately. This was something I struggled with a lot two years ago when I started this Patreon: I felt like all of my sketches became bland once I rendered and detailed them. But lately I’ve been enjoying the rendering...

TUTORIAL // making your digital portraits more interesting

It’s time for this month’s tutorial! In my list of suggestions I got from patrons, one of them was how to make a drawing less boring - or alternatively, what I do to make sure that my drawings are eye-catching and exciting to look at. I thought this was a really interesting topic to tackle, because it’s something that I have actively been trying to tackle lately! I often find halfway through the process that the image is falling flat, especially for social media where it needs to stand ...

EARLY ACCESS // DALL-E mini collab

I’m back from my vacation and it’s time to get back into the flow of drawing again! The whole DALL-E mini thing exploded while I was gone, and my sister was playing around with it this afternoon (mostly to generate hilarious images like the ones on this twitter account). She generated a bunch of things in “loish style” which...

EARLY ACCESS // random sketches

Here are the results of a random sketch session! I drew some characters and a little self-portrait. I’m never happy with how my self-portraits turn out, since I never feel like they actually look like me! It’s especially difficult when I can’t liquify or paint over it. Gotta keep trying though!
