ANNOUNCEMENT // kickstarter launch date & cover reveal

Hey guys! As promised, an update on the new artbook! We just pinned down the official kickstarter launch date: It's going to be on October 11th (my birthday)! I know I previously said it would be in September, so be sure to update if you noted the previous date :) This will be the cover art, and there's also a little mockup to show how the art will stretch over the entire back cover.

As you can see, the book will be called The Style of Loish and it talks about how...

EARLY ACCESS // environment speedpaints

In my last post, I talked a bit about how frustrated I’m feeling with my speedpaints lately. For these sketches, I really tried to push the sense of movement and work a bit faster. I usually feel like the rough versions of my environments look good, but then as soon as I start detailing, it loses the personality. So for these I tried to take a different and more restrained approach to detailing. I also included the rough versions so you can compare the two! I feel like I’m getting there, ...

PROCESS VIDEO // pink environment

Here’s the first 30 minutes of my process for this speedpaint. As always, you can speed it up or slow it down by clicking on the gear button. I recorded it vertically because I want to make a reel or tiktok video out of it, hence the odd format! Even though I’m not happy with the final result of this sketch, I think this process video gives a lot of insights into how I make environment speedpaints....

EARLY ACCESS // pink environment

A quick environment speedpaint. Honestly, I was incredibly frustrated with the process of this one. I feel like I’m hitting a wall in terms of capturing movement in my environments, and also spending too much time rendering things that don’t really add to the personality of the drawing. I want to work faster and more dynamic, so I’ll be focusing on that more in my next sketch session. I recorded the first half hour of this process with my phone, so I’ll be posting that up later today!...

PROCESS VIDEO // poppies, part 3

Here’s the final part of my process for the poppies painting. Just like the last one, it’s sped up to twice the speed, and you can use the gear button to slow it down or speed it up. After spending a bunch of time rendering the face, I go back to an earlier version of the painting and decide that the face looks better before, so in this video you’ll see me copy/pasting the rougher version into th...

PROCESS VIDEO // poppies, part 2

Here’s part 2 of the poppies process! This one is sped up to twice the original speed, but you can tweak the playback speed using the gear button if you like. This part of the process was mostly about elevating it to a level of detail that made it suitable for a print, which means getting the colors to work well and bringing a kind of richness to it. I’m still working rough but I’m trying to amp ...

PROCESS VIDEO // poppies, part 1

Here’s the full process video for my Poppies painting that I posted last month! The whole thing took me a bit over 5 hours to make, so I’ve divided it up into 3 parts, each one slightly sped up so that it’s not too long of a watch. As always, you can tweak the playback speed using the gear button!

This first video is sped up 1,5 times, so only slightly faster than the real time process. In ...

EARLY ACCESS // little village

Another speedpaint inspired by my trip to France in June! This is a portrait of a little french village called Pagès. It’s one of those villages that is totally isolated and only has a few houses clustered together. I would have a hard time living there, but it’s so peaceful when we hike through!

I’m trying out different brushes lately to get more texture, which is fun but kind of knocks me out of my flow. I have mixed feelings about the end result, but I want to keep using more ...

UPDATE // goodbye, July!

This has been quite a rollercoaster of a month for me! It seems like everything is much more intense than usual! Has it been the same for you guys?

Here's a little review of how this month has gone for me:

GETTING BACK INTO THE FLOW

After my vacation, it was challenging to get back into the creative flow, especially because my vaccine shot had me feeling exhausted and unable to focus on drawing. I also feel like I’m between phases at the moment, not ...

EARLY ACCESS // trendy girls

It’s weird seeing the fashion trends from my childhood become popular again with young people today. It’s even weirder to think it’s been 20 years since those days already. Time is going fast!! Here are some doodles based on people I’ve seen walking around here lately.

EARLY ACCESS // flow

Remember these thumbnails that I posted a long time ago? Most of you said that you liked the fourth one, so I decided to go ahead and finalize that one! I’ve been using a technique for some of my paintings lately where I go from greyscale to color using different overlay layers. I used that technique here as well, gradually adding more and more blue / pink tones. It’s really time consuming, but I like ...

EARLY ACCESS // sketches

I haven’t sketched in a while, so I decided to grab my sketchbook and do a little sketch session. I tried using a blending stump for the first time and I really enjoyed using this tool! I want to do more sketch sessions in the future, and get back into more traditional stuff! I’m really out of practice at the moment haha. Hope you like these!

TUTORIAL // sculpting with color

Here’s this month’s tutorial, which is on sculpting with color! I demonstrate this process in 3 different ways, and talk a bit about how to create more 3-dimensionality, how to keep the colors from getting too muddy, and how you can make adjustments and corrections throughout the process. I hope you enjoy it, and if you have any questions, I’ll be happy to answer them!

Below are some additional resources that are relevant to this tutorial ↓

PROCESS VIDEO // moka

Time for a process video! I’m also working on a process video for a longer painting, but for now, here’s my process for the speedpaint I posted last week. As usual, I drew it in Photoshop with a cintiq tablet! It’s in real time and you can speed it up or slow it down using the gear button!

Here is the final result:

And these are the reference images I used:

EARLY ACCESS // heads

Trying to get back into the flow of drawing after not drawing for three entire weeks! When I stop drawing for a while, it’s hard for me to feel motivated again. I think it’s because every time I draw, I make mental notes of something I want to improve at or explore in a future drawing session, which motivates me to continue. When I haven’t drawn in a while, I just don’t know what to focus on. It’s like I have to get the engine going and it’s a little bit harder than it would norma...

POLL // july tutorial

Hey lovely patrons! I'm making my July tutorial this week, and I'd love your input on which topic to cover. This month I want to make the tutorial more focused around a specific technique or challenge, since the previous ones tended to become too generalized and long. I'd love to hear which one you'd like to see the most, and if you have any ideas for a future tutorial, feel free to drop it in the comments below!

EARLY ACCESS // moka

I spent the last two weeks of June on vacation in the south of France, in a remote area called the Cevennes. We had booked a little house on a property that was teeming with animals. There were chickens, pigeons, ducks, dogs, horses, and a few cats too. One of the cats, Moka, instantly stole our hearts. He was the sweetest little kitty. He loved to be cuddled and held, and always came to greet us in the morning. He would hang out with us and fall asleep in our arms. We had such a hard time sa...

EARLY ACCESS // exclusive kickstarter print

Here’s an exclusive sneak peek for you guys! This painting is going to be the exclusive print for my upcoming artbook, The Style of Loish. The kickstarter for the book will go live in September, and I'm about halfway through writing / assembling images for the book at the moment! If you back the book through the kickstarter, you’ll be able to get this print with your book - and there will be limited signed copies too! I’ll also be breaking down the process for this one in my book. I tru...

UPDATE // goodbye June!

June is almost over! I'm so excited for July because it's the month that I'm getting my first vaccine shot (on the 4th)! I'm honestly so emotional over it because it's the moment I've been anticipating for a year and three months. I'm terrified of needles but can't wait to move forward and hopefully out of this pandemic, and back into safe interactions with friends and family.

Here's a quick overview of how this month went for me:

EARLY ACCESS // car sketches

Time to step out of my comfort zone! I always struggle with things that have straight shapes and a heavy mass. My art tends to turn out very flowy and light, so drawing cars is very much the opposite of my aesthetic! But it is something I want to get better at. Here are some car studies in which I tried to capture their look but also stylize and exaggerate them a bit so that they felt like ‘my style’. I have mixed feelings about the end result but it was definitely fun to do!

EARLY ACCESS // happy dance

Some happy dance sketches of my character No Girl, who is feeling a  bit more positive these days. After more than a year of living in the pandemic, the situation seems to be improving around me. I’ve got a date for my vaccine shots, and the infection rate is going down in my country. Things aren’t perfect but I’m feeling hope for the first time in a while. So this calls for some happy art!

EARLY ACCESS // cloud

I’m obsessed with intensely backlit clouds. It makes the cloud look so chunky, like it has the texture of a marshmallow! Those clouds probably taste super good, haha. Here’s a study that evolved into an environment piece.

EARLY ACCESS // jelly blobs

A blobby painting! When it comes to lighting, it helps me so much to think of all the basic shapes as blobs - basically breaking them down into soft, simplified volumes and imagining how the light would fall on that. It’s just so much easier to imagine lighting on a bean shape than on really complex subjects, so it makes the process more enjoyable for me! And leads to a squishy end result, haha. Hope you like this one!

EARLY ACCESS // colorful skies

The result of a sketching session where I tried to push the colors way further than they were in real life, to try and capture the same feeling that I had when I saw that moment in real life. I feel like photos are so dull in comparison to seeing the real thing! But then when I push the colors too far, it doesn’t look believable anymore. Trying to find the balance with sketches like these!

EARLY ACCESS // weasels

You might recognize these from the animal tutorial I posted earlier this week! I wanted to do some animal sketches to get into the right mindset for the tutorial. Weasels are very cute and have a fairly simple shape, so I really wanted to challenge myself to make them appear more fierce and strong, since they are such incredible fighters. I was really happy with the line sketch but knew from past experience that once I go into the coloring/rendering phase, I lose some of the appealing qualiti...

TUTORIAL // drawing animals

It’s time for this month’s tutorial: drawing animals! This is of course a very broad subject so I focused mainly on the challenges that I experience when drawing animals. Topics covered in this tutorial include:

• analyzing the reference image to see what the most important shapes are

• construction: going from the rough sketch to more detailed lines, and solving issues with the likeness throughout the process

• what to focus on: which details make the ...

DEMO // pixiv drawfest

A few weeks ago I participated in Pixiv’s drawfest! The idea was for artists to demonstrate their process so others could draw along and post it to social media in the end, which is why I mention that as I'm wrapping up. Here’s the end result of my demo:

I’m uploading the video here because I feel like it’s a good overview of my process as a whole! My tutorials are more specific but th...

EARLY ACCESS // scream

I did inktober back in 2018, and created a drawing for ‘thunder’ showing someone with strong emotions and clouds all around them. I didn’t like how it turned out in the end, because I really struggled to capture the emotion in my ink sketch and I felt like I didn't succeed. I decided to revisit this one and recreate it in more of a painterly style. So here’s my 2021 version of this original inktober sketch!

UPDATE // hello June!

The last day of May is here. It was the rainiest May I've ever experienced in my life! But now the weather is sunny and it's starting to feel more and more like summer! Here's a little review of how this month has gone for me:

ARTBOOK

I started writing my artbook this month, which I’ll be working on in shorter increments until September when the kickstarter launches. The book will be about my style, and I also want it to be a resource for artists who are searchi...
