It's time for the August tutorial! This one is on creating an artistic routine. This is something I talk about quite a lot in a few of my other tutorials, like imposter syndrome for artists and a roadmap for artistic growth. This tutorial is about which steps you can take to build a routine that matches wit...

It's time to get back to basics: the shapes we use to construct our characters! This month we will be drawing simple and expressive shapes together. Try to simplify and streamline your shapes as much as possible to push the personality of your character drawings! There are many different examples of how you can do this in the inspiration folder, including some instructional images.

It's been a warm and intense month! I returned from vacation in the first week and have been working hard to get back into the flow of things. I feel like I got the creative engine going again and I can't wait to make more art in August, fuelled by many more cups of iced coffee!
Here's a little review of how this month has gone for me:
DESIGNCUTS DRAWING SESSION

This month’s challenge for flame members was on studying water surfaces! Exercises like these are always a great way to discover new techniques, since it's challenging to draw such a dynamic surface with so much fine detail. I decided to do some studies of water splashes, as well as a speedpaint of a summery watery scene! I found these very refreshing to do - especially with these warm temperatures...

Here is today's Q&A session! It was a really great conversation with a lot of focus on mental health. It got interrupted halfway through because my computer ran out of disk space for the recording, but it resumes again after that!
Some of the topics covered in this session are:
How I approach reference - including examples of a reference board I've used
How my patreon evolved over time
My controversial take on whether "natural talent" ex...

As promised, here is the process video for my iced coffee illustration! I figured this was a good companion to this month’s tutorial on line weight - I apply a lot of the principles from that tutorial in the early stages of this painting while constructing the linework.
I also use a technique where I use a mask to turn the lines into a transparent layer. If you want to know more about h...

A drawing about the kind of fatigue that no amount of iced coffee can cure. The summer is often a super exhausting time for me because I don’t sleep well when the weather is warm. It’s a combination of the heat, mosquitoes, long daylight hours and the noise from having windows open at night. Let’s just say I am really glad that iced coffee exists! And that I am getting air conditioning installed in my bedroom this week - after so many hot and tired summers, it was finally time to take t...

This is an idea that’s been floating in my head for a while. I was thinking about previous drawings that I made that showed a negative or ambivalent relationship with one’s reflection (like this one or this one), and I wanted to create a new take on that idea: something that showed compassion and connec...

Time to get back into the creative flow after my summer break! It’s always hard for me to get back into drawing after a break, and the longer I wait the more overwhelming the task becomes. So I usually default to drawing activities that are a bit more low-key and easy to do, which is why I decided to do a sketch session in my sketchbook.
The first two pages are some anatomy studies and the next two are stylization studies and an idea for a painting. I always notice that starting with...

A new month is upon us, and it’s time for a new tutorial! This one is on line weight. It talks about why it’s helpful to vary the thickness of your lines, and how you can achieve different types of stylistic effects with different approaches to your linework. If you like creating neat and clean lines, it has lots of helpful tips - but it’s also for those of you who like to just work from rough sketches and keep your lines messy, like me!
I mention a lot of tutorials t...

These paintings were referenced from some photos I took during a spring walk:

I love how the days get longer and the colors are so vibrant just as the sun is setting! Poppies are also some of my favorite flowers, I love it when they are almost glowing amongst the grass. I feel like red and green has been a theme in my art lately 🤔
