Samurado - August 2024 Updates

Hey guys!

With the introduction of the new areas, we decided some more powerups/upgrades were needed to keep Samurado feeling fun all the way through.

So this update has a basic implementation of a fire Damage Per Second ability for your melee attack. I'm REALLY pleased with how it turned out and am excited to add in more abilities for different attacks and elements in there now that I have the base systems in place to get this all working.

Cheers everyone!

Hope you all had a wonderful summer!!

New Github Repo Uploaded

Hey guys!

I'm trying to get a little ahead due to the game jam, so I've posted the repository for next week's tutorial now!

This one was a request from one of you! And it's a best-proactices tutorial for collectables.

This project uses a simple approach using an abstract class to re-use a lot of boiler-plate code (to save you you) and keep the collectables scripts small and simple. So exanding this system to have all kinds of collectables that do just about whatever you wan...

New Github Repo - 10 2D Shaders (Combined into one MASTER shader.)

Hope you guys enjoy this one!

This one has a nice little bonus that is NOT included in the online tutorial (to be posted tomorrow) - which is the custom editor script for the shader. I modelled it similar to All-In-One-SpriteShader where each shader is ONLY active if the bool is set to true. Otherwise all those shader calculations are skipped over.

You can find this one under:

"TUT-10-2D-Shaders-Master-Shader"

Hope you guys enjoy!

New Repo Added - Interactive Water!

Hey guys!

This tutorial will be dropping very shortly. Sorry for the last minute github add, but I'm pretty excited about this one!

Similar to my ultimate 2D character controller (I'd been wanting to make my own for years) - another thing I've wanted to try tackling for years is interactive water.

I'm very happy to say it was a big success! (a decent swimming controller may be something i tackle in the future, so for now ignore the fact that gravity in the water is exactly ...

Samurado Updates for July 2024

So before i give details, I'm looking for ANY and ALL feedback, particularly around the new art/stylization/shaders/particles etc. I have officially lost all objectivity I've looked at them for so long and need input!

Anyways, I'm REALLY excited for this update!!!

Since I got back from my time off in Ontario, Nikki and I fully revised the ENTIRE story of the game. It's entirely different from our original, and is broad enough to include everything we've already built for the game....

Samurado Experiments:

Hey!!
Been having a BLAST creating different shaders/particles and combining those with lights and post-processing effects to spice up certain areas. This is a small sneak peak at the fire area. This was my favorite because of the heat haze...I love any excuse to do vertex displacement in shaders!

Anyways, that's all!

Talk soon! Will have lots more to show at the end of the month!

It's Been a Fun Week!

Super excited to have Brandon and the Littlest Sasquatch home tomorrow morning!!!

We've all had a great week - on the home front we did lots of editing, made a new enemy, and reworked the story for Samurado.. and of course I spent a ton of one on one time with the oldest kiddo.

We watched a ton of movies, Austin Powers has been requested as a yearly trilogy ...and we finished off the week with an outdoor concert and some Canada Day fireworks!

Looking forward to getting back ...

Samurado Updates for June

Hey all!

Some of you already know (and some don't) that we're posting this a bit early today because I (Brandon) am flying down to see my parents till July.

As you can see in the VERY rough video, the early stages of improving the race mechanic are underway. Getting the dash to work with pathfinding but not overshooting corners was....a challenge. But I got it done.

But suffice it to say, this is VERY rough, I haven't been focusing on polish because I want to add in all the ...

Part 2 of our ULTIMATE 2D platformer Controller is out!

Hey guys!

I wanted to put this out nice and early, since I'm actually leaving tomorrow to fly to Ontario for a little over a week.

A little background:

Since becoming 'okay' at gamedev several years ago, I've ALWAYS wanted to create my own 2D platformer controller. I've taken a look at most of the popular and recommended ones on Youtube and always had to make quite a few modifications to make me happy with it.

But I never felt confident enough to make my own. View Post

(Early Access) Create a Sequence System | Unity Tutorial

Hey guys!

In this tutorial I wanted to share a simple sequencer system I recently used in Samurado. It comes in really handy when you need to easily be able to control the timing of a LOT of different events (like playing sound effects, particle systems, etc.)

Hope you enjoy!

EARLY ACCESS: Watch This if You Feel Like You HATE Your Game

If you've been plugging away at your game for a while now and you feel like it sucks or you can't even tell if it's fun anymore, you're not alone.

Trust me, it happens to the all of us, and it’s a crucial stage where many people feel like giving up. Even big names like Eric Barone, creator of Stardew Valley went through similar feelings.

The reality is, when you're too close to something, you lose perspective. You might feel overly critical or worry that your game is just a me...

(Early Access) Ultimate 2D Platformer Controller for Unity

Hey guys!

This one was quite a bit more ambitious than my regular tutorials, and took quite a bit more work. I've found that making a "GOOD" 2D jump is the MOST important (but also super difficult) things to do in 2D platformer games.

And so I wanted to make the best 2D controller I possibly could. This one features:

  • A run button (like Super Mario/Super Meat Boy)

  • Ground and Air acceleration and deceleration.

  • Gravity Controls

Samurado Updates for May 2024

Hey all!

  • So as always, there were some bug fixes

  • There's a new enemy (he charges at you and blows up whenever he hits anything. This can damage both YOU and enemies. But it does REALLY high damage so watch out)

  • Chests are now damageable:

    • This solves two problems:

    • 1 - there is an edge case I'e been trying to solve where you can sometimes get stuck if a chest spawns in the wrong place, completely blocking your proress. I t...

EARLY ACCESS: What's it ACTUALLY like to pay the bills with an Indie studio?

As many of you know, over two years ago, I quit my job and sold my house to start this Indie dev studio with my wife. Like many of you, our dream was to make games full-time.

But the reality is, our journey has been a mixture of joys and challenges. We're not where we want to be just yet—we're still working on our first game and juggling a lot of tasks to pay the bills.

Starting a game studio is tough but also rewarding. It sometimes means facing business aspects you might...

If you like making 2D Platformers...stay tuned!

been cooking up something REALLY cool the last couple days for a tutorial.

I've been wanting to make my own 2D platformer controller for some time...it's always just about lack of time.

But for fun, I finally decided to sit down and figure out how to make the PERFECT 2d movement.

It comes complete with:

  • ground and air acceleration and deceleration controls

  • a run button (Ala Mario...or Super Meat Boy)

  • Intuitive design control...

EARLY ACCESS: GameDev for NOOBS

In this video, I’m going to demystify the game development process, so by the end, you’ll have a comprehensive understanding of how video games are made.

We’ll start by looking at game engines like Unity, Unreal, and Godot, which are where all the magic happens.

From there, I’ll explain how to create assets—such as sprites for 2D games and models for 3D games—and animate them to bring your characters and environments to life. We’ll also dive into coding, which is es...

(Early Access) - Watch this if you've never used JOBS in Unity (Tutorial)

Hey guys!

I'm on a performance and optimization kick, and since I've finished up with my ECS learning/experimenting, I wanted to move into the JOBS system to see what it's capable of!

My thoughts: I love it! And will be looking for ways to use it in Samurado.

No ECS required, and HUGE performance boosts when used in the right situation.

Hope you guys enjoy!

(Early Access) - CRAZY shooter with WAY too many bullets using ECS - Unity Tutorial

Sorry for the delay on this one guys! This one is a 2 parter so I had to take it a bit further to be able to finish the project before I could edit part 1 together.

So this is my first time delving into ECS, and I gotta say:

A) it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be!

B) the performance you can get is INSANE.

The goal from the start with this one was to make a shooter with THOUSANDS of bullets hitting HUNDREDS of enemies to see if we could get it running at 6...

Just messing with ECS for an upcoming tutorial

managed to get nearly 70FPS on 50 bullets per FRAME using Unity ECS, not too bad considering it has collision detection as well!!

I think I was getting about 10 FPS (sometimes less) on a normal monobehavior workflow with the same number of bullets...

Pretty cool!

Man what a weird workflow though...
