Onymojis! [ Patreon rewards ]

After a pretty intense commission cycle, I decided to catch up on some of the rewards patrons have been purchasing through StarStickers with their points.

Emojis are hard to get right, but they're also really fun and satisfying to work on and once they've been properly optimised and installed on discord, it's so sweet to see people using them!

The first image is a x5 series for real life kitties (first time ...

No Mercy - [ FFXIV, Bloodstone series ]

A whole year after I released my flagship piece, the Blood Lily, I present you with the second piece in what I've now titled the Bloodstone series.

I put so much pressure on myself to finish this in a way that would live up to the Blood Lily. I think I collected something like 50 different versions and 12 different PSD files trying to fix and adjust every pixel? I don't think I've obsessed so much about a piece in a long time.

That said, I'm pretty happy with the result overall- e...

Tally Timelapse [ Lineart process ]

A timelapse for this piece here!

This is an interesting timelapse - which I usually wouldn't have published, as I struggle quite a lot in the early stages. I wanted to show how it looks when I can't get something right to begin with and it takes me several tries and many deleted versions to home into a face shape or expression that feels right.

It takes a minute, but I always get there ...

Refuge - [ FFXIV Commission ]

This has probably been one of - or even the most complex piece I've worked on. I'm pretty sure I put something like 60-70 hours of work into this one. That said, it was such a joy working with these beautiful colors- I'm really happy with how this turned out.

Please leave your thoughts in the comments - reading them makes my day!

Heart Timelapse [ Lineart process ]

More lineart processes- this time for one of my favourite pieces this year: Catradora being snuggly.

The thing that really pleased me about this piece is that I tried a similar post last year and just couldn't work it out, whereas this year it came together relatively easily (you can see I still faff a lot about the faces to get them to look at each other).

Progress!

Saehild - [ FFXIV, Commission ]

A hyur-elezen cutie, with an original outfit design! I had so much fun working on this- especially thinking about how to recreate the original outfit (fourth thumbnail under the image) with my style. I tried to be as faithful as possible while still giving it a little bit of my own signature whoosh.

This lineart commission was requested as a rush order for a present, so I really hope the giftee enjoyed it!

Shiva - [ FFXVI ]

I don't think I've been as excited about anything in this forsaken year as I was about the Final Fantasy XVI launch trailer. So here, have the fastest drawing I've ever made- completely fueled by adrenaline and screaming.

One icy queen, yes please and thank you.

Patron surprise sketchies! [ Part 2 ]

Here are all the portraits I managed during this weekend's sketch marathon! Which really wasn't so much a marathon as a very light sprint. I did realise that 4 portraits per day is kind of my hard limit before my hand/back start hurting. The other aside is that the more I did, the more I tried to perfect them- which ended up making some of these look like nearly finished portraits! Not that I mind, but it was a difficult balance to strike between being quick and making something that felt wor...

The process for this piece here! Working on this one was a pretty chilled process where I spent forever cleaning up the lineart to make it look as sleek as possible.

Serenity Timelapse [ Color process ]

A rare color timelapse! I don't produce many of these because I typically bounce between Procreate and Photoshop A LOT, so the process is constantly interrupted.

While I still finished this in Photoshop- mostly to adjust the coloring and lighting- but I carried out most of the process in Procreate, so here- watch me paint a happy little tree.

You can see the finished piece here.

SEPTEMBER ART CHALLENGE

Mandatory "What is an art challenge?":  Art challenges are a casual way for everyone to get involved in doing something creative, with no pressure or need to do a perfect job. It's not a contest or competition- everyone is welcome and all patrons receive the same rewards. Furthermore, it's not just open to artists, but to writers, video editors, sculptors or anyone with two hands and a creative thought in mind.

Refuge - [ WIP, FFXIV Commission ]

Full title: "Refuge on distant realms"

This piece has been intense so far- with the lineart alone taking me about 3.5 days to complete. I am really pleased with how it's turning out though and I'm looking forward to the coloring, as I plan to play around with some early-dawn blues, pinks and purples.

Your thoughts are always loved!

Here be the lineart process for this piece here! I really enjoyed working on something with a little bit of perspective. I'd really like to push this kind of angle more going forward.

No mercy - [ WIP, FFXIV Commission ]

I'm excited about painting this one, as it's going to be painted in the same style as the Blood Lily piece from last year- making it the second in what I hope will become a series of FFXIV job-inspired paintings with a slightly haunted flair. If it turns out okay, it might also end up as a print so please look forward to it!

Gwyllion Timelapse [ Lineart process ]

FINALLY getting around to posting some of these older timelapses! Big apologies for the delay, but please do look forward to more of these popping up in the coming days.

Either way, here's the lineart process for this piece I posted a while back. This was a fairly intricate one- no less because most of the references were text based, so there was a lot of back and forth to get it to look the way I...

Ony goes Full Time Art Mom!

It’s September 1st my guys and that means I’m all yours! (I lost the receipt so you can't return me~)

I can’t believe August flew by like that, but here we are: sock in hand, Dobby is free. I’m still a little stunned that this is happening, to be honest, so I’m going to think about it a little less and just yeet myself straight into everything I’ve got planned to celebrate with you guys!

Tally Kino - [ FFXIV Patreon reward ]

This has to be one of the cutest, happiest little miqo I've ever drawn. I normally say that drawing was fun or challenging, but I think working on this one made me feel soft on the inside- like Bob Ross adding happy little perky cat ears.

That said, I did struggle with the original sketch for this one and I'll post the timelapse soon to prove that even art moms forget how to draw sometimes.

Either way, do leave your feedback in the comments!

Patron surprise sketchies!

It's been a while since I got to do these- quick, 20 min sketchies from the screenshots my patrons have dropped in our Discord server- so this weekend I went on a spree! I'm hoping to do at least a few more of these throughout the week, and also a little more regularly going forward.

If you're in the discord, drop your pictures in the #art-refs channel for the chance to get one of these! If you're not in the Discord, you can either connect your account in Settings > apps or you can d...

Wounded - [ FFXIV Commission ]

Finally got to work on this piece for one of my longest standing patrons and Quicksand box buddy: Ephaux Maubant.

I had a blast working on this piece- trying to work all of those dark tones into something readable. Also, bonus points for creepy elezen boys.

Sydney Lancaster - [ OC, Patreon reward ]

I'm pretty pleased with how simple and clean this one turned out. Sometimes I feel like I NEED to add detail to make my pieces pop, but keeping things minimal is very satisfying.

This reward was a "Flat Color Bust" purchased with points via StarStickers! If you're a patron and haven't signed up yet, message me for a link. And if you're not a patron... well, por qué no?  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Au'ra emoji - [ FFXIV, Patreon reward ]

The first emoji set purchased with points via StarStickers (ie, my Patreon's reward shop. If you haven't signed up yet, ping me a DM and I'll send you a link)!

These were so fun to work on- a nice break from all the heavy rendering. They're surprisinly a lot more work than you'd think, as a big part of it goes into making sure they look good when reduced to 20 pixels. By the time I was done, that middle face ...

All the WIPs!

After working on that intense, full render DnD piece it's been really nice to scale down to some simpler things (ALL THE CHIBIES!).

The top one is a commission WIP- also a full render- which I completed the lineart for a little while ago. The ones in the thumbnails are Patreon rewards purchased in our fancy StarStickers reward store, with the points you get from being a patron alone!

I'm really enjoying working on these- particularly the emoji sheet and that coffee face on the sec...

Rowan Ironhearth II - [ DnD, Commission ]

This was such an interesting piece to work on- one, because it's the first full body DnD piece I've created and secondly, because the text description I worked off from had an exact 53 bullet point requirements. There's obviously a lot of love poured into this character and I really tried my best to capture that level of detail as best as I could.

You can see magic-less and lineart versions in the thumbnails below.

I'm going full time freelance!

"Wait, weren't you already?"

Many, but not all of you, will know that when I started this adventure almost 3 years ago, I did so with a backup plan while holding onto a part time job in London. This job has helped me pay the bills while Patreon grew slowly but steadily, but it also meant that for all this time I've been working 7 days a week with barely any breaks.

I've always been risk averse, so I kept telling ...

[ Poll ] Physical reward ideas!

Good day my lovelies. I hope this rare poll finds you well!

Today's a big day, as we've finally reached my set goal (ie, to earn enough to become a full time freelancer), which I will fuss about in a separate post soon. With that in mind, I'm already getting carried away in planning all the things I want to do going forward- one of them being the potential of adding physical rewards to StarStickers or as a 6-month treat to certain tiers.

If I go ahead with that plan, what kind of ...

Vyanthe - [ Warcraft, Night Elf ]

I indulged myself a little today and drew my nelfy, a happy shiny collector who lurks in city corners and paints with sticks. I was prompted to do this because of one of those "facebook memories", containing a bunch of art from two years ago- including a sketch of her. You can see it in the thumbnail below the picture.

I often do redraws of pieces I did when I was much younger, where the difference is largely obvious. However, this time I wanted to do something a little closer, to show ...

Heart - [ She-ra ]

I really wanted to have this piece done in time for Pride month. Alas, commissions had to come first so I've been chipping away at it a few hours at a time for weeks.

She-ra was a huge part of my childhood and although I was sceptical of the reboot at first, Noelle Stevenson did such a fantastic job at bringing all those characters back to life with x10 times more personality. I also can't overstate how important I think the representation across the show was- especially for a show that...
