Ignatz was a character I was drawing a lot in the background at this time. I really liked him for some reason.
I also had just read a collection of Will Eisner's The Spirit, and I was inspired by the story 10 minutes (hence the clock motif.)

I only did 2 and a half pages of this comic, but it was a precursor to Madame Zelda's in the private sketchbook that all of this nonsense began in.
I was reading a lot of Crumb at the time, and this was 'inspired' by the character of Big Baby. I really didn't know what I was doing (the low quality paper didn't help) and it looks pretty embarrassing now. At the time I never thought anyone would see it.

Even though the art on these early pages is more cringe than I care to be reminded of, I am nostalgic for the white hot creativity that they represent. I was REALLY going panel to panel and I was surprised at what was coming out.
By about the 5th page of any of my storylines I had a fairly solid idea of what was coming up, and while it always remained a very creative, revelatory, process it was never quite as pure, quite as unbridled, as these early pages. I think it's probably hard to ...

Despite the fact that I never really left the Geocities ethos of web design, and the limits of Smackjeeves HTML editing options, it seems like I was always drawing banners and buttons. Here's a sampling.
Incidentally, if you've been enjoying this bonus content and want to see more, consider upgrading your level. This is the last sample bonus post for regular members. Beginning in November the bonus content will be for tier 2+ subscribers.

Hey there Zelda-heads!
Here are some early sketches for Nanny Goat's Nursery. I think most of the characters ended up in the comic at some point.
If you enjoy the bonus content, consider upgrading. After next week's post the bonus content will be available only to tier 2 Patrons and higher. You'll still get all of the regular comic pages regardless.

This was the first Nanny Goat's Nursery strip. I was read a lot of Little Lulu comics at the time and I swiped the concept and a lot of the beats for this one.
I was also doing this weird thing where I tried to make regular animals in the world of Madame Zelda's look like humans. That's why the rocking horse head looks so weird.

I found these character concepts from 2006. I had joined a local kink group called People with Alternative Life Styles (PALS) where nearly everyone was older than me by several decades. I had to apply through a Yahoo group and get vetted over a series of interviews. Nowadays you can just RSVP to events through Fetlife.
Anyway, I was taking a lot of inspiration from all the old kinksters I was meeting (now I'm the one who is old,) and a lot of it actually ended up in the comic. I still p...

Hey there Zelda-heads! Here's another sample of a bonus post for tier 2+ Patrons.
I made these four “pin-up” illustrations pretty early on in 2006/2007 when I was first starting to post comics. Part of the motivation was that I had a little square sketchbook that had nice paper and I was so sick of the coarse yellow pages in my private sketchbook (which I talked about last week.)
It was also a way to develop the characters quickly without have to finish pages and pages of stor...

Hey there Perverts! This is a sample of the bonus content tier level 2 and 3 Patrons will have access to. I can't embed the photos in this text, so I'll just attache them in order. I leave them unlocked for Patrons of any level for October (in case you want to upgrade or whatever.)
When I was in my early 20s I carried a suitcase full of sketchbooks, and drawing tools everywhere I went. I was constantly drawing: on park benches, in cafes and bars, and at my job in a adult video store. It...

This wasn't the first Zelda's comic I ever made, but it was intended almost as a theme song for the Zoo of Perversion. It gets across the idea that it's a kinky place and some of the characters pay to be there while others have ended up there for other reasons.
Of course, in reality, all of the characters that appear in Madame Zelda's Zoo of Perversion, even the old ladies, are consenting cartoon actors that are exactly 21 years of age.
