IV-23 Trust (II)

People don't want to know what hides in the dark.

There's nothing wrong with that. There's nothing wrong with the fear, with the paranoia, with the ignorance. It's there to keep you safe. It's wired into us, evolutionarily or in our programming as well.

You don't belong there.

You know that if you did, you would be able to see, you would be able to move to the place. You wouldn't be so blind, and the things that live in the darkness...

Next chapter will take a bit longer

Going to spend a bit longer on this new chapter. Will have more time to write starting now, and so I'm going to reduce the errors and issues in the chapters if I can. The last few chapters have been a bit lacking in a few ways, so I hope to improve on them. See you in a while. Sorry for delay.

IV-22 Trust (I)

Most people do not truly understand their own flaws. It is easy to notice what weaknesses you have on a surface level, but past that, your problems are usually systemic and structural, majorly influenced by your environment and the context you face. This is where things get complicated; this is why many Pathbearers, even those who attain great power, are cut down in battle.

Often we say someone is clumsy or inattentive. These things can be generally true. These might indeed...

“Oh, be quiet, Harlon. This is your fault, you know. I wouldn’t need to risk my life if you would’ve just won that fight and stopped yourself from getting taken prisoner.’

“...”

“Hey! No! No! I just insulted you! I’m calling you weak and pathetic. You can’t take that.”

“I am…”

IV-20 Terrify (II)

I've always been interested in borders, even as a child. Borders are fascinating things. A powerful Pathbearer can ignore the borders drawn by a weaker nation, for they are beyond consequence. Yet, the same Pathbearer must recognize the border of a changing biome. If they go north, they will realize snow falling from the sky. They will notice the temperature dropping, how the sun hides itself behind a blanket of dense clouds. They will also regard the threshold between dimensions and worl...

You’re wrong, Shiv. Dead felling wrong. Gods, boy, it’s like you’re not paying any attention at all. The reason why the Swan-Eating Toad works isn’t fear. People don’t cook here because they’re afraid of me. I’m not dangerous. My Physicality is shite. My magic’s pathetic. I’m not a dedicated warrior and my Toughness is so low that I still get burned touching the bloody stove sometimes.

There’s nothing about me that’s terrifying to most Pathbearers. But...

IV-18 Decisions

Leadership is made up of three things, son. Vision, choice, and imperfection.

When you lead, you need to sell people on an idea, a path that they can follow. This ties into choice, but the main reason people seek a leader out is that they are uncertain, that they're lost, that they don't have an idea, and that's something that matters. An idea, a hope, a reason to believe, a reason to fight. When you come of age, you will encounter sell-skilled and other Pathbearers who use...

The most important skill you can all develop in this course is Awareness. Awareness and not stealth. Awareness will teach you about stealth. It will instruct you on all the aspects of Stealth that you have not understood yet. There is no absolute Stealth, not even for Legendary Pathbearer.

Consider all your senses, visual, auditory, taste, touch and more. Your Magical Skills come into play here too. They are in another layer of sensory advanced you can gain. And there are s...

…Aside from the Starhawk, the only other Ascendant that holds true subversion potential is the aptly titled Cripple the Strongest. Yet, Cripple will prove to be a fascinating case as it is not its avatars that are vulnerable, but rather than the Ascendant itself.

Unlike the Starhawk, Cripple is not driven by personality ideology. Instead, it is motivated by a crude sense of personal justice and grievance, and often finds itself at odds with the other Ascendants. It also d...

Brief update

Just brief update again: the weird scheduling I warned about has kicked in fully. Have not gotten to cleaning up the latest chapter yet, but I'll get something out in a while.

Maybe next week will get better, but I'm probably going to need to shift my posting time (not frequency) to avoid this issue.

I will apologize for the messiness over the past two weeks. This will take a bit more adjusting on my part, but I think I can get back to my optimal posting pace from before.

Ah! Dungeons and jails! My favorite place to socialize and meet new friends. Naturally, because I don’t like being captured, I usually sneak in myself and hide in the walls.

You learn a lot of things when hiding in people’s walls. You learn about their habits, what they like, what times they touch themselves, how long they cry afterward, and also what they’re good at.

It’s how I recruit helpers for my heists these days. Because most people are in a du...

A few hours delay for upcoming chapter; will try to resume posting from other two stories starting tomorrow as well.

I'm getting off an odd OT shift and will be uploading in a few hours instead (not a full day's delay, don't worry). I'll also try to get back to releasing Godclads tomorrow as well.

Stay tuned for more chapters. Also, if the schedule and timing of release gets a bit weird, it's because of work. Don't expect massive multi-day delays though. Maybe just off by hours.

Alright. So. You’ve been captured. First thing about getting captured—tell no one you were a pupil of mine so I can be spared the shame, at the least. There are Pathbearers that say getting captured is an inevitability if you live and fight long enough. They are full of shit.

Getting captured means one of a few things. The most likely thing it means is that you surrendered to the enemy, which is not ideal. If you’re high-tier, they might sell you back to your people o...

IV-13 Breakout

It is a universal truth that every Marital-Pathbearer has imagined themselves breaking free from prison at least once—if only for the novelty of doing so.

As someone who has escaped from multiple prisons, dungeons, and slaughterhouses, I strongly recommend against making this a common thing in your life as the prelude to breaking out usually involves some amount of capture—and potentially torture if you are unlucky. Even in the situations where you are deliberately tryi...

There are situations where certain threats are deemed too grave a danger to be allowed to roam free, yet too valuable to kill, at the same time. In these circumstances, the Yellowstone Republic has a solution: The Rubix Wells.

In my experience, everyone seeks to betray themselves in some way. It is cathartic to confess your sins. It is cathartic to release all burdens lingering in your mind, like extracting an arrow. It hurts, but you yearn to feel an absence where your flesh was filled.

And the one that wished to admit something will make it known. They will talk over much. They will display sentimentality, display offerings of truth from within themselves. These truths can be failures of their ...

IV-9 Enough

You should cultivate a certain madness in your heart. To be a good warrior and a great Pathbearer, one must hold two conflicting desires at the same time. A willingness to be gentle and nurse the wounds of your flesh and mind after battle, to be a creature of boundless love for yourself. Understanding is essential. Understanding and impossible amounts of forgiveness for all failures.

Then, at the same time, you must be merciless. You must drill every last failure out of you...

Drown in your defeat. Learn to savor the taste. Let your limitations hurt you. Let yourself rage against your failure.

Or you can turn away. It won’t fix anything, but there is a mercy to getting struck down from behind. Warriors hate to admit it, but there is a blissful ignorance in not knowing what kills you. Not knowing the reason you failed. We do it as children. We close our eyes and pretend the problem isn’t there. Because it is comforting. Because knowing that we...

Have you ever gazed into the heart of an apocalypse? I have. I have seen things inside the mind of Tarrasque so deep, so true, inevitable. It is our inevitable end. They… they aren't born yet, do you know that? They aren't born yet. They're made later. They're made later by the ones at the end.

Because they are the fate of everything, the fate that waits at the end of strife.

You have to understand… you must know, they are fate embodied, because the...

Even if you gain the ability to shape your own mind, there will still be places where you remain fragile. The main goal of Project Deathless is multifaceted. It is more than just creating an entity that can make the system choke on its own eternal urge to constantly engender war and strife. An entity that simply won't die no matter what world they find themselves in, no matter how high that world's ambient mana threshold.

An entity that constantly grows death after death until it exceeds the limits of its world and eventually forces an incursion to occur.

Old.

You think I'm on the Auroral Council because I'm old? Let me tell you something about being old, girl.

The system doesn't want you to grow old. The system doesn't want you to extend your life beyond any point where you cannot provide a good fight or a good struggle. Age is correlated to two things in our existence. The first is competence. The second is power. Political power, social power, physical power, magical power, power nonetheless.

That's fine. Your goal here shouldn't be to avoid pain. It should be to maximize your own benefits while doing everything possible to spare yourself from critical damage. That being enslavement...

Every time I look upon the fool, I am reaffirmed that his life is destined for eternal tragedy. It’s not that he never got the affirmation he needed as a child from that pathetic degenerate he has for a father or the literal monster that became his mother. No. He could have almost survived that. He did muster his extraordinary understanding of magic and become a near-unmatched scholar, after all.
