(October 2017 "FROM THE ARCHIVE) - "Silos"

I was just a teenager when I went to see a band called The Fire Theft in 2003. It was my first concert. The band was made up of former members of Sunny Day Real Estate, my favorite band who had just recently broken up (almost immediately after I had fallen in love with their music, of course). The Fire Theft hadn't even released their first album yet when I saw them play at the Theatre of Living Arts in Philadelphia. I can remember the seemingly unbearable leg pain I suffered from getting there ...

(September 2017 "SOMETHING NEW) - "Cloud Bunker" - Live at Pyramid Scheme

This is a new piece of music we developed (and are still developing) at the end of 2016, as a sort of bizzare/majestic set opener while we were on tour with Thank You Scientist and Moon Tooth last December. This remains one of my favorite shows on the tour. By this point, we were already halfway through it: gwe were finally getting used to the stage nerves, the set, touring life in general. It was another plus that the crowd was engaged, and we had a pretty good night (except for Jamie,...

(September 2017 "FROM THE ARCHIVE") - "The Moon" Original Mix

"The Moon" is the oldest song we've ever put on a record. In fact, you could call it the first Tea Club song and be kind of correct. I say kind of correct because "Ice Clock" was the first song the band ever wrote together under The Tea Club banner. But "The Moon predates "Ice Clock" by almost a year. It was originally called "Truffles and Tragedy" and was written for a band called Book of Thoughts which was the band Dan and I were in right before The Tea Club. It was the only song to survive th...

(August 2017 "SOMETHING NEW") - "Ear on Arm" live at Boot and Saddle

Last year sometime in October (or maybe September) I sat down at my Roland Fantom X8 and started banging out a stacked 4th C chord followed by a half diminished e chord, and BAM 10 minutes later I've got a chord progression for a brand new TTC track. Experimenting with the Korg MS-20 "sample and hold" function, the self-oscilating filters, and the LFO, I came up with a sort of electronic pulse to hold the initial beat and add to the atmosphere. I brought this skellital framework to practice and ...

(August 2017 "FROM THE ARCHIVE") - "Zero Wave"

In the fall of 2006 we went into Big Blue Meenie studios to begin pre-production with legendary producer Tim Gilles for what would become our first album, "General Winter's Secret Museum." By that point the band had been together for 3 years and had songs dating back from before the band's formation all the way up until a month or two before entering the studio. We decided to record demo versions of just about everything we had.  After finishing worthy versions of over 20 songs we went thro...

Of Green Rooms and Graffiti (Strangely NSFW)

Those of you who followed the Tour Diary that I wrote last December while on tour with Thank You Scientist and Moon Tooth may remember me mentioning this... The one unfortunate constant at every venue I have ever been to is human phalluses drawn on the walls of backstage "green rooms". I decided to change these images into harmless drawings of animals using a marker. It was a great success, and I vowed to do this as often as possible.

At last Saturday’s show in Brooklyn, I was once again giv...

This video comes from a recent live performance we did at a venue called "Boot and Saddle" in Philadelphia on Saturday, April 1st, 2017. The entire concert was filmed, and the song featured here is called “I Shall Consume Everything”. It is the closing track from our third record Quickly Quickly Quickly

“Consume” was a regular in our live repertoire after the release of QQQ in 2012 and into the first half of 2013. After that we didn’t perfo...

(July 2017 "FROM THE ARCHIVE") - "Planet Moon"

At the end of 2011, the band recorded all the basic tracks for 10 new songs. We had over 70 minutes of music and weren’t entirely sure what we were going to do with it all. One of our ideas was to release it altogether as a double album; another was to trim it down to an hour-long record, similar in running time to our previous album Rabbit. Then the idea was posed to divide the songs into two separate albums and release them within (roughly) a year of each other. We found this idea t...
