The beatitudes have been both fascinating to think about and also a very different feel from the rest of what we've been doing, because there's no getting around Jesus' tone, and even if we consider it from a distance, it still feels like it pretty assertively speaks to our individual situations and our collective moment in history. Which is probably good.

I think the Sermon on the Mount is the most important block of theological teaching in the Bible, and this week we tear into it (in the good sense). I've been looking forward to thinking about this together since before day one, and now we're here.

By the time we get to the middle of Matthew chapter 4, we still don't have a crystal clear picture of what Jesus' quest is, nor do we have a clear picture of the trajectory of this whole narrative; but we know it's important because both God and the Devil showed up for it.
We're going to set the stage for where this is all headed and how the original audience would have seen it at this point.

This is the final week on the temptation of Jesus. I've deeply enjoyed this slow-burn processing of the last scene before the Jesus thing goes public and goes big as we move to the second half of Matthew 4.

I'm putting a bunch of writing time in right now in preparation for the conclusion of chapter 3 and the completion of Jesus' preparation for ministry segment in chapter 4. There so much here, and I'm grateful for a medium, platform, and community that allows for the deep dive pace that I think is necessary to get this stuff.
I know it's a sacrifice to do what you do here, but it's what makes this whole thing possible. Thank you so so so much!

As we've seen so far, there's a lot of history and historical context in the early going of the book of Matthew, and chapter two lobs us a softball in new ways.
