Week 18 - Persecution and wrapping up the Beatitudes

The beatitudes have been both fascinating to think about and also a very different feel from the rest of what we've been doing, because there's no getting around Jesus' tone, and even if we consider it from a distance, it still feels like it pretty assertively speaks to our individual situations and our collective moment in history. Which is probably good.

I continue to appreciate you.

Rich, Thick, Creamy, Center-Cut Jesus Kingdom Stuff

Even if literally no one listens to any of this week's stuff, I'm still grateful to you for putting me in a position where I had to process through serious stuff that super-matters.

I can't make Internet stuff without you, and you also put me in a position to have to think hard about things I think are important, so I gotta say thank again for being here and having my back.

Now we're into the heart of everything

I think the Sermon on the Mount is the most important block of theological teaching in the Bible, and this week we tear into it (in the good sense). I've been looking forward to thinking about this together since before day one, and now we're here.

I can't do this without your help, and I constantly remember that with gratitude.

Week 15 - Jesus is about to start saying stuff...

....and then it gets real. Hope you've enjoyed the roll up, because as soon as we start getting into Jesus public life and teaching, it becomes mind-blowing.

Week 14 is about Jesus' strategy and the trajectory of this story

By the time we get to the middle of Matthew chapter 4, we still don't have a crystal clear picture of what Jesus' quest is, nor do we have a clear picture of the trajectory of this whole narrative; but we know it's important because both God and the Devil showed up for it.

We're going to set the stage for where this is all headed and how the original audience would have seen it at this point.

Thank you for supporting the program. It means a tremendous amount to me and my family. View Post

Week 13 - Finishing up the temptation of Jesus

This is the final week on the temptation of Jesus. I've deeply enjoyed this slow-burn processing of the last scene before the Jesus thing goes public and goes big as we move to the second half of Matthew 4.

This podcast happens because of you. Thanks for being a part of this community and for being invested in making weird Bible content happen on the Internet.

I feel like this thing is hitting it's stride for me right now

This last week-plus since coming back from break has been so much fun. I'm still feeling all this out and developing a rhythm with it, but I'm sensing progress in that regard, and I'd like to think I'm getting better at this little by little.

Thanks for the encouragement and support friends!

Matthew pivots into a new pace and feel in chapter four...

...and I'm excited about it. To me, Jesus' temptation is far and away the most interesting passage we've looked at so far, and the implications for us today are very different than anything we've seen so far.
I don't know if you can tell, but I love doing this. Thanks for making it possible.

I'm VERY excited about week 10 (and 11)

I'm putting a bunch of writing time in right now in preparation for the conclusion of chapter 3 and the completion of Jesus' preparation for ministry segment in chapter 4. There so much here, and I'm grateful for a medium, platform, and community that allows for the deep dive pace that I think is necessary to get this stuff.

I know it's a sacrifice to do what you do here, but it's what makes this whole thing possible. Thank you so so so much!

Week Nine has a whole lot of John the Baptist

We're processing through John the Baptist and his rivals this week, and there's also a cool episode where we bring in an expert to sort out some stuff I'm not bright enough to process through alone.

Thanks for letting me share a little chunk of your day with you!

I'm excited because we're getting in to grown up Jesus now

These next couple of episodes will cover the big-picture take-aways from the birth and infancy narrative of Jesus from Matthew's Gospel, and then we're on to adult Jesus saying very compelling stuff.
Can't Wait!!!

Week 7 is about Herod, the Magi, Egypt and the end of the infancy narrative of Jesus (probably)

...and I say "probably" because there have been some great questions that might cause me to go a bit deeper on a couple of topics before we move on to chapter three of Matthew. The awesome thing about this podcast is that I can make it for the people who want it, and that's you. If there's stuff you want a little deeper dive on, or if there're outstanding questions, leave a comment and it might just prompt conversation on the podcast itself.

I love doing this. I can do this because of ...

Matthew 2 Starts With a Juicy Story About Hated Herod and the Enigmatic Magi

As we've seen so far, there's a lot of history and historical context in the early going of the book of Matthew, and chapter two lobs us a softball in new ways. This week we're talking a ton about the patriarch of the New Testament Herod family who plays the role of foil to the redemptive story of Jesus, the disciples, and the Early Church.
This family gets thwarted a lot, and their first thwarting is at the hands of the Magi and God. These stories are suuuuuuuuuper fun and set up the gig...

The new podcast episode is now fixed

Doing a new daily podcast gives me several times the amount of opportunities to screw stuff up. That is what I did tonight by publishing a one second long podcast episode. This has since been remedied. My apologies.

The TMBH Patron Pins Are Finalized And Being Made This Week!

They look cool. I'll admit I'm a little biased because my friend Bethany made the logo for me and I think she's spectacularly gifted at stuff like this, but even doing my best to put biases aside, I think these things look sweet and will be a lovely addition to your pin backpack, or pin ascot, or pin pageant sash, or pin overalls, or pin parka or where you keep your enamel pins.

I'm very excited that Dwell is going to be on board with us for at least a couple of weeks. I've been hop...

You Crushed It Studying the Genealogy! Nice work!

Seriously, you came to dive deep into Bible stuff, and then we dove deep into Bible stuff and you're still at it! Thanks for being interested to engage with the text like this!

Since Christmas season starts the day after Halloween now, we're going to transition into a completely seasonally-appropriate look at Joseph's role in the advent and what that means moving forward in the life and ministry of Jesus.

Thanks for all you've done to get behind this thing!

On to Week Three!

We'll be diving deep in the controversies and beauty of Matthew's Genealogy of Jesus and talking about why it matters for our understanding of the rest of the book and for our understanding of Jesus as King.

I can't tell you how much your support and participation in this thing means to me.

All right friends, which intro music did you like?

My friend Jeff Foote made all this music himself, and he's been kind enough to let me use whatever I want on this podcast, so we've got some flexibility here. What do you think?

Week 2!!!

I'm not going to lie, getting the rhythm of this thing dialed was a little challenging in week one, but it was still a joy to finally get this up and running. I LOVED hearing your thoughts and feedback here and on the subreddit.

You're the most invested members of the audience, so you get to help make the important decisions around here like what to do with music. I'm going to lead with a different bit of music each day this week and I'd love your thoughts on which one of those (or the...

Up and running!

I may not have a ton to say in this spot most days, but today I want to say thank you so much to all of you who jumped in at the very beginning. I've been wanting to do this for a long time, and it couldn't happen without you. So thanks very much.
