Broken Sky Wallpapers

Two different HD Wallpaper-sized crops of the Broken sky establishing shot (download the post attachments). The aspect ratio was obviously not conducive and as usual you can really see the slapdash nature of my painting up close, but someone expressed interest so I thought what the hey.

Scribbled size comparison

I posted this in the NTO comments in response to a question someone had, and figured I'd share it with you folks since it was pretty missable in its original context.

Process: Broken Sky page 3

So here you go. A coloring process video. It’s greatly sped up, and even so it’s over an hour and a half. I can’t imagine anyone watching this for an hour and a half. I was surprisingly nervy making this. I felt like someone was watching over my shoulder recording and it made me even noodlier than usual. Compounding it this was also a pretty time-consuming page; a tough one where I didn’t do myself any favors with very unfinalized pencils, but I chose it for this anyway because it w...

Broken Sky page 3

So here's this week's page, early for you patrons. This is the one I recorded the totality of coloring, which, wow, I have a lot to say about, but I'll be sharing that with you along with the video, which is huge and I'll hopefully get edited and up by tomorrow. Originally I was going to post the video first and the page after, so you basically saw it happen, but I'm so self-conscious about the idea of people watching this happen I wanted to reassure you it ultimately ends up looking page-like...

And here's the next page a little early for you Patrons. Next week you'll be getting a video of me painting page 3 along with the page itself! Best,

I think I've waited long enough to share the new stuff with you guys. Sorry more doesn't happen in this first page; as you might imagine it's a build-up to the following panel/page.

Tutorial v0.5: Character Concept Development 1

My sincere apologies for how long I’ve been holding out on delivering the promised tutorial! It’s been partially due to plain ol’ keeping busy, but also because I’ve been sort of flummoxed by what shape it should take in spite of – because of, actually! – the poll I put to you guys. As far as subject, the majority of folks voted in favor of a concept development tutorial, and medium-wise most of you wanted a video. When I really thought about this I wasn’t sure how to easily dovet...

Eric Dagley's Redridge Express Cover

Eric's finished #6 cover is elegantly simple at a glance, but there's a lot to chew on when you really dig in. I love it. A physical Book #6 will go on sale soonish.

Eric Dagley's Redridge Express Thumbnails

The inimitable Eric Dagley did the covers for NTOs #3 and 5 and is back again at my humble request to sell #6 (the print version is running incredibly late; sorry) with another of his reliably awesome, refreshingly non-literal covers. He is truly the cut rate James Jean to my low rent webcomic Fables, but like me, he's got to start somewhere with his concepts. Earlier this week he sent me these rough thumbnails. Generally I choose the one he develops -- the standard illustrator/client arrange...

Breakdown: Lookback, page 2

Sorry to be so out of touch, Patrons! I've been out of town this previous week. Work on NTO and PWS continues apace. I'll be sharing the totality of my PWS short development with you eventually as many of you expressed a lot of interest in concept/visual development. Meanwhile, here is a really quick walkthrough of the second NTO page. Man, this was really forever ago. I've left out the huge inline ramble on this one; if you've got any questions though I'd love to rap with you about this &...

This short by Robyn Seale is another early taste of the Poor Wayfaring Strangers anthology I’m cooking up with my comics friends. I know you’ll enjoy it while I work on my own contribution and take care of the preconceptual work on NTO’s ambitious seventh chapter, Broken Sky. A huge thanks to everyone who’s kicked in on the Patreon. You’re a big help to the continuation of NTO and also the PWS side project, which I’m 99% sure 99% of you will be very much into.

Carver and Ironwood

I've got a dozen story ideas related directly or indirectly to NTO; I can't imagine I'll want to plod on with these fantasy westerns after another 3-5 years of NTO proper, especially when some of them, as a friend told me, are "made of the same natal material as NTO itself". Still, I get a little burned out drawing panel after panel of Vane looking angry and Hunter looking like a Dreamworks poster, and in the back of my mind these other characters continue conversing. I just might start doing s...

Hey guys

Leaving the tutorial survey open a little longer (https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/VPWSLB3). This is partly because only a fraction of patrons have responded, and partially because what is emerging as the topic of choice is something I'm not going to have time to get deeply into for a couple weeks. When I do, hopefully I can assemble something decently informative. Bear with me on the wait! As you may or may not kno...

I probably could have pushed and got this out to you guys yesterday, but I took it kind of easy this week in light of all the happenings. That said, I feel like I'm doing as well as can be expected, and I'm super grateful for your support these last few [very rough] weeks. Don't forget to take a second to fill out the tutorial poll if you haven't already -- still waiting to hear from a lot of folks. https://www.survey...

And about that Milestone Goal....

You guys are owed a tutorial, so we'd best figure out what you'd like to see so I can get on it as soon as I get the chance. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/VPWSLB3
