Callan's Discussion (Patreon Exclusive)

Callan’s Discussion

As always, the Empress’s visage was a powerful and intimidating aura. A young man looked up at her authority as she glanced across the gathering brigade. Summoners stood in neat rows below her shrill purple eyes as they inspected her Army. As her words ended her greetings, clearing the brigade from their duties, the Summoners saluted, their hands forming fists against their hearts as they bent their arms behind their backs.

Rian’s Truth

Darkness was splintered by the dozen or more fires that littered the camp. Summoners flitted about preparing meals and patrolling the brigade’s outer layers. A tent flap opened, revealing two young women. Dressed in a vibrant green cloak, the older woman grimaced as she supported her younger sister. A woman of smaller stature, in comparison, stumbled slightly with a limp, her usually neatly braided hair unkempt. Her trousers were ripped, and she was covered i...

Zachary’s Assessment

Heat poured onto the back of a summoner’s neck as he waded through the growing crowd of Talbour. Zachary had been away from Talbour for quite some time. He hadn’t attended the annual demonic culling of the dead lands in a few years, so he hadn’t had a chance to return home. A small smile passed his lips as he spotted his baby sister arriving at the square centre. His family carriage stood out to him, adorned with his family crest of an owl, its wings spread ...

A Maids Reflection (Patreon Exclusive)

A Maids Reflection

The Kitchen of the Heversham manor was as busy as always. A young maid avoided one of the chefs as they dashed by with a pot of hot water. They were preparing the feast for the Viscount and his family later this afternoon. Head Chef Orca barked orders at a young girl as she cut a carrot in the incorrect shape. The small girl flinched at his firm reproach bowing for forgiveness as Freda dashed by.

Freda disliked the Kitchen.

In particular, she wa...

Chapter Forty-Nine

No sooner than the words left my mouth, chaos ensured in the tribunal room. Voices rose over one another as I flinched at the familiar shout directed my way.

“Lynette! What are you doing!” Callan’s outrage overpowered the general’s confused chatter. He gripped the witness stands' railing so tightly his hands were turning white.

Eduard’s body was as still as water, his gaze fixed on me with an emotion I didn’t know he could make. I met his eyes ...

Chapter Forty-Eight

The auditorium halls felt even more enclosed as four Summoners escorted me. They surrounded me tightly in formation like a caged animal that could go wild at any moment. I peeked behind me and saw Nathaniel following us at a distance with Callan beside him. It was strange seeing the two of them walking together so calmly, not a pair I would ever think mixed social circles much.

“Lady Heversham, are you aware of the decorum in a tribunal?” a summoner in fron...

Nathaniel’s office was very different to Lieutenant Cragborn’s. Nate hung various halberds instead of a bookshelf along the walls as decoration. A large window behind his desk let sunlight fill the room showing off the intricate pattern woven into a large round rug. His desk was a black dyed wood with silver handles the edgers adorned in silver triangles. A collection of ink was stacked on the right atop a sheet of cloth stained with it.

Everywhere I gazed,...

Callan walked beside me as he took me through the hallways of the auditorium. We passed a few other trainees as they explored the building that contained the lecture halls. Each of them hesitated as we passed them by, Callan’s expression a dower frustration.

“Why do you want to see Lord Hudson all of a sudden?” Callan asked as we rounded a corner. The hallway’s constriction faded into a large open courtyard. Pillars of stone edged our walkway, separating ...

The lecture hall felt ominous as I stood alone with Garret. My eyes flickered to the doorway that was Lieutenant Cragborn’s study. He had shut himself away in there; knowing he was within distance was somewhat comforting. I wasn’t entirely alone with Garret.

Garret stood before me with a look that would have frightened a child; as he stepped closer, I quickly backed away, folding my arms across my chest as I regarded him warily. “What is it that you wanted...

The abrupt interruption from Lieutenant Cragborn served as a much-needed distraction from the tense confrontation between Garret and me. I shifted my attention to the stern figure at the front of the room, grateful for the opportunity to refocus and regain my composure.

I had let my emotions get the better of me again.

I shouldn’t have argued with Garret like that in such a public space. I could already see the glances people were sneaking my way. I had ...

I stared at the paper in my hands as Lieutenant Cragborn returned to his desk. The sheet had a detailed overview of the intricacies of Alinor Keep. It included a list of the facilities available and the members in charge. A time schedule for the eatery and library alongside the rules expected as a member of the Army. I also saw a list of lecture sessions I could attend.

“You will have a scheduled weapon training session you need to attend every two days. All ...

Lieutenant Cragborn stared at me with a raised eyebrow as if he was studying me. His piercing gaze made me shuffle on my feet as I gulped. Hesitantly I lifted my hand to clear my throat, steadying my voice as I stood before his dark mahogany desk.

His study, if this is what it was, was lined with bookcases filled to the brim with hardback covers and rolled-up scrolls bursting from their confined spaces. The scent of aged parchment filled the room with ...

Trainees assembled and patiently waited outside the eatery, their anticipation growing with the sound of the first bell resonating throughout the city. True to his word, Lieutenant Cragborn arrived promptly, assuming the role of our guide, as he beckoned all of us to follow him away from the building. Scanning the area, I confirmed that most trainees arrived on time. However, as we embarked on our journey, I couldn’t help but notice a young beast-kin boy chasing afte...

Chapter Forty

Glass separated me from the outside as I stared at the yard. Two young boys held wooden sticks as they fought under the watchful eye of an older man under the bright sun of the sky. The boys sweated as they crossed wooden blades, their smiles huge. They had arrived moments ago in a carriage from the capital. A young girl with blonde hair watched them nearby happily.

A weight on my shoulder made me look up to the woman who had brought me to this house. View Post

My body’s muscles had never felt so relaxed in months as I stepped out of the bathtub, satisfied. Clamping my hair with one of the towels provided, I hummed in bliss from the warmth and cleanness the bath had provided. It had taken me a bit of trial and error to get the temperature right; it turned out one of the taps was for heated water and the other for cold. I marvelled at the device; if it had been available in Talbour, I would not have needed to rely on the m...

The Lieutenant left us standing before the doors of the Trainee quarters. We saluted his departure, all of us eager to explore our new residence.

"First come, first serve!" A noble exclaimed, running towards the doors in haste the moment the Lieutenant left our view. The action ignited a flurry amongst the trainees as they suddenly all rushed after the man scrambling to be first into the tall building.

I held back, avoiding the stampede as the...

Question for my Patreons

Hello all!

I am considering making renewal into an audio book and looking to get your feedback regarding this.

Of course the narrator should be female to match Lynettes voice.

However, what style would you think suits this story best? Would the narrator doing different voices for each character be fun or would you prefer it read purley with one voice?

Thanks

JaffaJessie

The Empress piercing gaze swept over the assembled brigade, and I couldn't help but feel a shiver run down my spine. Her presence alone exuded authority and power, and I couldn't shake the feeling of insignificance in her presence. Her eyes seemed to linger on us trainees for a moment, I automatically straightened with a gulp, but she quickly turned away from us.

A lone soldier stood forward from our formation, his purple cloak flourishing behind him as Azriel...

The large gates of solid metal creaked open, the sound reverberating through the chatter of the Trainees. Delicate images were carved into the towering structure so high I could not see any detail from where we were at the back. Then, in tune with the beating drums, the brigade stepped forward through to the Capital beyond.

Our group followed Lieutenant Cragborn's lead; beside us in the same formation was Lieutenant Sharpclaw with his group of commoners. With ev...

Callan escorted me back to my camp when Teresa and Harold returned. He hadn't wanted to risk leaving me alone with Garret and even went as far as to swear he would make sure I wasn't alone with him again. It was a nice sentiment, but I didn't know how he could keep that promise. Callan couldn't be aware of my situation at all times.

I wasn't ready to forgive him yet, nor place my trust in him. I couldn't erase everything that had happened between us so easily. ...

Callan's gaze shifted between Garret and me, his expression a mix of surprise and anger. He narrowed his eyes as he took in my dishevelled hair and Garret's prone form as he nursed his injured hand.

I saw him clench his hand around the hilt of his Jian as he stepped toward the camp.

"Callan, I can explain!" I stuttered as fear etched onto my heart. The box above his head blurred as Callan raised his hand to stop me from coming closer to him. He...

After the deterrent device demonstration, the march did not seem as difficult. We rose higher as the landscape rounded from the flat highlands. The air was thinner, and I found myself gasping heavier breaths to replenish my oxygen. Garret stumbled on a jutted rock cursing as Harold helped him back to his feet, keeping him in line with our team. After our scheduled rest for lunch, we slowed our pace as the climb became more straining on our thighs.

Eventually, ...

Rian stayed with us as we cooked some breakfast. She surprised us with some of the meat from the Agiluf she had saved. Teresa's joy from being able to eat meat that wasn't charred was shared with me as I excitedly showed her my new cooking skill. Rian taught Teresa like she had for me, and we congratulated her when she gleefully pumped the air at gaining the skill for herself.

I awoke, nestled between Teresa's legs as she sprawled in our tent. A faint smile graced my lips as she responded with a snort to my movement. It had become a familiar sight to wake up like this over the past few weeks. Carefully, I extricated myself from her limbs and slipped out of my bedroll.

The sun peeked through the tent's fabric, casting a warm glow inside. I stretched my limbs, feeling the soreness from yesterday's emotional turmoil and physic...

My feet carried me faster down the hill as I wiped my wet cheeks with the back of my hand. I did not dare to look back at Callan as he called after me. His voice drifted against the wind the further away I walked until it faded against the roar of the ocean waves.

My chest stung, my stomach clenching in a knotted mess.

I had not intended for that conversation.

Not now, not here.

It was like my words had vomited uncontrollably. I hadn't been able to...
