I need to write a book

I need to write a book about my past seven weeks at fat camp. I came here, fundamentally opposed to the existence of this institution. I leave here, knowing that I have never felt more safe and supported as a disabled fat person ever before in my life before coming here as I have these past seven weeks. I leave here, fundamentally opposed to the existence of this institution. I leave here devastated that a fat camp, a place that only exists to serve in the eradication of fatness, is the place...

Happy Disability Pride

To everyone whose symptoms were ignored

To everyone who spends nights on Google, because those symptoms present differently on a body like yours

To everyone whose body enters the room before they do

Because the number on the scale matters more to the gate keepers of care than the pain you live with every day

To those who gave up because being disabled is a full time job

To those who gave up because they lost hope

To those we've lost

I love fat people (fat camp musings)

Every day I'm here, the more deeply I feel committed to the fight for fat liberation. I talk to folks here every day about the shame they feel in their bodies, and the life experiences that got them to that point, and all I can do is dream of a different world. And that is the world I fight for, and will continue to fight for, every single day for the rest of my life. Because this cannot be it. I believe we can be better.

Healing pause

I'm existing in liminal space, trying to heal my body from years of medical neglect. I've been forced to forgo my beliefs and praxis. Of course I've never been against prescribed diets for disabilities, or inpatient medical care, but when it's me and the diet is keto and the care is being given at a fat camp, it's messy. I have no choice but to press pause and accept my current circumstance as life saving, even if they go against a decade of values driven world building. And thankfully the wo...

1989 Ursula, a love story

This is not a critique, this is a dream. A dream that the body I saw Ursula in in Disney's The Little Mermaid (1989) at age 4 would be brought to life this past weekend in 2023. I knew it was a pipe dream. Melissa McCarthy is not the actor I would hire to proudly jiggle her fat on screen. She did her job. She was evil, leaned into her sexuality (a rare on screen occurrence for her), and stole Ariel's voice. But as I sat in the Staten Island Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, I found myself dreaming of ...

What do I do with my arms? (Modeling 101)

It's common to feel confused about what to do with your limbs when modeling, or even just posing for a photo with friends. I like to think about points of contact to ground your hands! If posing with a friend, put a hand on their shoulder! If posing alone, where are all of the points on your body you might naturally land a hand (scratching your head, hand on the hip, hand on the heart, hand on the stomach, hand on the face). If you're feeling crazy, just dance!! Throw your hands in the air or...

I might get a diagnosis this week

Two years of undiagnosed chronic pain and illness have taught me one thing. Health (by choice or genetic lottery), like thinness, does not make you a better person than an unhealthy or disabled person. If you live long enough, you will become disabled and unhealthy. You think you can stave that off because you have convinced yourself that your health is in your control, and that anyone who looks unhealthy to you just didn't exercise enough self control. But it's not true. At the end of the d...

You Wanna Be on Top? (Intro to Modeling)

Intro

  • I'm Jordan Underwood (@jordallenhall on all socials)
  • Started modeling in fall 2018 when I signed with the BTWN -- they put out a call for models of all sizes on Instagram and I responded, and then signed with them that week! When I submitted, I included a video of me dancing to make sure I stood out from the other folks who were submitting
  • I was already comfortable on camera because I was working full time as an actor in the city (headshots...

Fat Hack (Doctors Office Edition)

* Set boundaries your practitioner at the beginning of the appointment -- what words do you want them to use, do you want to know your weight, tell them what size blood pressure cuff to use, what seating is most comfortable for you, where to draw your blood from.

* Write down your symptoms and how they are impacting your life/how your life has changed since experiencing the symptoms. Don't leave until all of your concerns have been addressed and have a plan for next steps, tests that ha...

Lesbian Day of Visibility

I have officially been a lesbian for more of my life than not. I first wrote, in a blank journal that I immediately shoved down the trash compacted (very wasteful), "I think I'm a lesbian" in 2009. I've been thinking a lot about my queer childhood -- from second grade, declaring to my lesbian teacher that Lydia and I were going to get married and adopt a baby like she had, playing boys sports, taking the kids scissors to Kit's scalp, and throwing a gender dysphoria fueled tantrum when my pare...
