Camp Prodigy Concepts #6

Time for some comic process! This may be the last Camp Prodigy concept post...at least, for now. >:) The first image batch of 9 are my thumbnails! When I post thumbs for TDL, they tend to look more refined. That's because I go straight from TDL thumbnails to inking! But for Camp Prodigy, I had the in-between step of sketching (the next 3 images!), where I correct the page sizes and elaborate on characters and backgrounds.

The final step is inking and coloring! The lines don't change much from the sketch phase, but coloring makes the page seem totally different, right?

(Omitting the cover page thumbnail, as usual!) I'm using more black placement this chapter! I feel like it suits the atmosphere of this arc, with the...murders... Ahem.

Camp Prodigy Concepts #5

Have I ever posted this online? I don't think so!

These are my pitch pages for Camp Prodigy, all the way back from 2021! The very beginning of my work on the book. The first scene is notably different in the actual graphic novel, but the second hasn't changed much at all. How strange! Pitch pages/first drafts are always fun to look back on.

What's that? Time for some settings? I agree!

Have any of you read Camp Prodigy yet? If so, I hope you enjoyed! I'm scheduling this post in advance, so by the times it comes out, who knows how I'll be feeling! Hopefully, excited :D

Here are some early setting concepts! Like fashion, designing environments is tough for me. And like fashion, that means I tried extra hard for the environments in this book!

THE BOOK RELEASE IS TODAY!!

How exciting! And now...

Time for some character sheets! I don't love making these, but they were necessary for this book. I had to keep all the details of the character designs and outfits straight in my head. Likewise, they were a good guide for body language, which I wanted to focus on in this book.

I've never known much about fashion, but I put my all into costuming this time!

Camp Prodigy Concepts #2

More Camp Prodigy! I wanted every character to be very distinct, even if you were to see them in black and white. Distinct dialogue, distinct designs... I'm pretty satisfied with the results! Here are some images I drew while I was working all that out.

Camp Prodigy Concepts #1

Hello patrons! I've got a different flavor of post for you today. If you follow me on other forms of social media, you probably know I've got a graphic novel coming out soon!

This art is included in the back of the book as concepts, but I'm also allowed to post it on Patreon as promo. So enjoy and expect more soon! And if you like what you're seeing, think about grabbing a copy of my book ^^

-summary-

Perfect for fans of Victoria Jamieson and Raina Telgemeier, this heartwarming middle grade graphic novel follows two nonbinary kids who navigate anxiety and identity while having fun and forming friendships at their summer orchestra camp.

After attending an incredible concert, Tate Seong is inspired to become a professional violist. There’s just one problem: they’re the worst musician at their school.

Tate doesn’t even have enough confidence to assert themself with their friends or come out as nonbinary to their family, let alone attempt a solo anytime soon. Things start to look up when Tate attends a summer orchestra camp—Camp Prodigy—and runs into Eli, the remarkable violist who inspired Tate to play in the first place.

But Eli has been hiding their skills ever since their time in the spotlight gave them a nervous breakdown. Together, can they figure out how to turn Tate into a star and have Eli overcome their performance anxieties? Or will the pressure take them both down?

TDL Arc 3 Sketches

Holy cannoli! Is that a sketch from 2022?

Well, the second image is. The first one I drew this month. I don't love rendering or using a painterly style, but every so often I get the urge to experiment, so I worked on that Yuma and Sarah art as a warm-up for a while. (I am chomping at the bit to talk about their dynamic. I need to be restrained.)

The Kilo and Yuma dynamic is also quite tasty to me! That first drawing is set in the past, before they were caught by the government. They used to be so close... I wonder why there's all this tension, now...

TDL Chapter 17 Concepts/Sketches

I'm pretty sure I've posted some of this before, but it can't hurt to err on the side of caution! Lots of the Big Three in this concept dump, and lots more to come with future chapters. They're some of my favorite characters, so I've drawn them quite a lot, haha. (I'm a sucker for villains!)

I thought Miriam Bosser might make an appearance in this chapter, so I drew up an outfit for her, but all we got was Jinx. Hmph! I might still use it at some point, though.

The last 2 images are from 2019. Wow! I've had the bones of this arc in mind since the very start of this comic. The Big Three have changed completely in some ways, but they're still very similar to my original ideas. And I knew I wanted TDL and NYSM to collide, but at first, they were going to be fighting! I think I landed on something much less shallow.

Leah Partridge wasn't present in my plans at the beginning of the comic either, but I like her a lot. It seems some of the webtoon fans are frustrated with her. I'm kind of enjoying that! I didn't intend for her to be 'controversial' or anything, but I can see why people would be miffed at her. She's important to the comic's themes, she's a very necessary character, and I just plain like her personality, so I'm pleased she's getting strong reactions, even if they're 'negative' by some measures.
