The two girls were walking side by side down one of the many familiar streets of Thundrel in silence. Their hands were intertwined, both wearing rings that shimmered beautifully in the evening lights.

Lilly wore the same dress she had been wearing last time, the red one that once belonged to her mother, while Mia wore a new purple one she had bought for this night on the day Gramps passed away. They both contained heavy symbolic meaning for the two of them.

Chapter 48 - Bennu

Thundrel looked exactly the same as it did before Lilly left, only covered by the dark of night. The glowing crystals normally illuminating the roads were dimmed, giving the city time to sleep.

Chapter 47 - The Divine

Lilly flew through the air on her way back to Stort City. Everything that had happened in Dortfell still felt unreal, but she knew it wasn’t. The ruby in her pocket told her that much.

She had received some unique clothes that were slightly too loose for her, but she preferred that over having them be too tight. They were far more modest than she had feared, covering everything but her head and hands.

Goddon studied the dent in the slab of dragon steel with an expression of intrigue mixed with annoyance. “Ahh, this will take some effort to fix. Ignus isn’t very fond of repairing stuff… Perhaps I should have enchanted it after all.”

Lilly was curious about who Ignus might be but had to address the latter part first. “It’s not enchanted? But why? It surely has more room than anything I’ve ever seen before!”

Chapter 45 - Phoenix and Titan

A solid granite slab floated up from the hole in the floor Lilly had created as she entered the room and landed in front of the throne. It slowly morphed into a square table perfectly suited for arm wrestling.

Goddon rose from his newly created throne and approached it, removing the robe on his upper body and showing off some impressive muscles for his apparent age.

Chapter 44 - Throne of Rock

Lilly was disappointed that her attack had been stopped, but she didn’t get the feeling of being outclassed. The defensive maneuvers to save the king had only narrowly managed to save his life.

She considered the words of the old demigod carefully, deciding to stop her attack momentarily. “I’m happy to finally be talking to the real authority here. Give me what I want, and we can stop this fight.”

The castle approached at a terrifying speed, but Lilly felt prepared. Her momentum and force should be able to penetrate any barrier trying to stop her, so she simply kept the target in her sight and kept accelerating.

A crash could be heard as some invisible force attempted to stop her, but it was useless. Dortfell’s barriers seemed to be on the same level as Eldoria’s, completely unable to stop her.

Hearing that Selene was in mortal danger, Lilly didn’t care about the rest of Rantas’ words. “Where is she now?” she asked, as controlled and concise as she was able to.

“The infirm–” was all Rantas managed to say before Lilly flew directly out of the window, breaking the glass without care. She flew as fast as she could without her goggles and arrived at the infirmary only a few seconds later.

Lilly found her way to where the army was returning with a worried heart. She had faith in her friends, but she knew nothing was certain in war.

Her first sight as she arrived, looking from between the citizens cheering for their return, was of a tired Dahn leading the battered soldiers with Eolande safely at his side. After a bit more searching, she could also see Eldrin walking alongside other mages, all looking unharmed.

The door to her room opened, revealing a tired-looking Eldrin. He had always looked tired, but never to this extent, as far as Lilly knew. He seemed to be in good spirits, though, smiling warmly despite the circumstances.

Lilly and Dahn exited the teleportation gate in Stort, one of the cities closest to the border. It had been used for several defensive battles already but still stood proud.

The dignified elf was sitting in nothing but rags, stripped of his enchanted items and armor. But it was easy to see he was a warrior. His body was incredibly athletic, with muscles that seemed like they could pry these bars open on their own. The king was not alone in the room– he had two older looking people there as well that Lilly assumed were advisors. One man and one woman, both a decade or two older than the king.

Lilly stood still, wondering if she should start speaking about the letter or if she should wait. She didn’t have to wonder long, luckily.

Chapter 32 - Royal Castle

The magnificent royal castle was visible for most of Lilly’s trip through the city, giving a sense of anticipation to all its visitors. Great spires and halls of white stone, decorated by large windows and flying buttresses, could be seen from all angles.

Lilly had never seen anything quite like it. She felt something might be missing in Thundrel, in comparison. The barracks didn’t have quite the same effect on visitors, despite the lavish interior.

Chapter 31 - Eldhaven

After rushing back home to get ready for the trip to the capital, Eldhaven, Lilly found Mia trying to put a hat on Beak’s head. She looked surprised to see Lilly and quickly hid the hat behind her back.

Looking at the finished letter, Lilly found the dichotomy between the flowery language and the ineligible handwriting to be quite poignant.

Her hand was still holding around Adelia as she wrote, in the hope that it gave her some strength.

A few minutes later, some guards had arrived and put chains on Victor before bringing his personal guards to the dungeons for imprisonment.

Now the three of them, Lilly, Adelia, and Victor, were sitting on the two couches while Claude was standing behind Adelia.

Lilly felt her skin start crawling the moment she realized how Adelia had learned the supposed truth. The scale had been flipped in her mind, making the doubt heavier than the trust. Cold sweat ran down her back, and her hands started trembling.

The day passed without any more enchanting, and so did the night. After a good night’s sleep,  Lilly woke up feeling fresh, but the exhaustion of the day before still weighed on her mind.

‘I can’t limit myself to only making a few enchantments a month, so I’ll have to deal with using suboptimal conditions in the future. I’ll have to ask Elly if she still wants the belt today…’
