The girl’s voice sounded both scared and indignant, like she was facing the god of death with a heart full of complaints.
But, kill her? Did he sound that scary? Or was she simply extremely paranoid?
“No, not at all! Why would you think that?”
“Don’t play games with me!” she yelled, having tipped over into anger rather than fear. She turned to him completely, but her eyes remained closed.
Quite a cute girl, with blonde hair set up in an elaborate bun....

Hello people!
I hope you've been well, and not too sad about Nova taking a long break. It will continue for a while longer I'm afraid, but it's still being worked on, don't worry.
But for now, I'm starting a new book I've been working on for a while. It will launch on RR at the start of next year, but I'm starting early here.
Here is the very temporary cover, to give you an idea:
Sorry for being slow to release these last few weeks. The combination of work stress and general loss of passion has been pulling me down recently.
The plan for Nova for a while now has been to get the first book out on Amazon through self-publishing, but my editor and friend has been struggling a lot recently, pushing the time of release back.
I will commit to releasing two chapters a week going forward, at least until the end of book 2, which I'm still not sure when will happen....

The old features of the archmage looked particularly aged as he absorbed the memories. Deep lines etched themselves deeper around his eyes as waves of recollection washed over him. The void was a place of much pain for both of them, and it had pressed on that ache many times over during his trip inside. His weathered hand trembled slightly against his sides.
Nova watched in silence, noting how the old man's breathing grew shallow and labored. Each memory seemed to weigh on him like a ph...

Nova instantly noticed the burst of power leaking out of the old archmage as he was looking at Millie’s soul. The air around the elderly man shimmered with uncontrolled magical energy. Something had surprised him greatly, more so than meeting himself or seeing Anny again.
“...Could you explain what you’re seeing?” Nova asked, waiting impatiently for an explanation. If this could explain why she had been dragged down to the final floor of the dungeon, he had to know.
“I...

Anny stepped forward after a slight hesitation. “Sure. I’m only nervous as to what you might find…”
“I’ll keep any embarrassing secrets you hold to myself, my dear.” The old archmage's voice carried gentle reassurance mixed with grandfatherly warmth. A sliver of essence fell from his hand and onto the formation, preparing to activate it once more.
"No, those are… well known by now." Anny's cheeks flushed slightly as she glanced toward Nova.
“Oh?” His old ...

Nova’s ears perked up the moment he heard the old archmage mention his research. If his older self were right, it could help explain many of the things he had been wondering ever since his second life began.
Why could he reincarnate? Why was he special among all the souls in existence?
"...I'm all ears, archmage. Since you mentioned yourself being only a fragment of a soul, I figured you had made sure of that somehow." Nova's voice carried barely contained excitement.
"Exa...

Anny looked at the old man with a look so confused that Nova nearly laughed out loud despite the surreal circumstances. Her eyebrows were furrowed so deeply they nearly met in the middle, and her mouth opened and closed several times without producing any sound.
Millie still chewed on the final remains of the sandwich, looking between the two white-haired men.
"I guess I shouldn't be surprised you know my name as well…" The old man's voice carried a note of resignation mixed wit...

Anny watched it all happen.
From the moment the innkeeper had mentioned 'Him,' she knew something was off. The wrongness hit her like a physical blow, and she felt it crawling under her skin in that moment—the void with its slippery tendrils worming their way into reality itself. She knew it all too well.
She tried to call out, to move, to do anything, but her body refused to listen. Her throat felt sealed shut, and her vocal cords frozen. She could only sit there, a prisoner in...

The inn they had found was modest but clean, hidden neatly next to a small alley. But while it was quaint and modest in appearance, the prices were fit for a palace of gold and jewels. They did not have the gold to cover a single room, so instead Nova was forced to trade a few of his unspent souls from Collport. Those were still valuable, at least, letting him hire a small room for a week with a hundred Soul Power.
Two narrow beds dominated the small room, separated by just enough space...

Nova looked at the man with a fair level of suspicion. He felt no obvious power radiating from him, but it was clear that the man was powerful. He would have to be to journey to the dungeon entrance on his own and survive the deadly forest, not to mention opening that massive gate without assistance.
But still, Nova owed him a great debt for keeping Millie safe.
"It's nice to meet you, Father Lowe. I'm very grateful that you kept Millie safe until I could arrive." Nova's words wer...

Nova blinked in confusion, looking between the three men who were now following him through the gate like he was their savior. "...You weren't actually guards at all?"
"Nah, the boss just sent us outside because he said we had gotten weak and lazy. And when we didn't manage to open the gate on our own, we couldn't really argue with his point..." The lead guard shrugged with obvious embarrassment. "I'm sure he would have let us back in before too much longer, though."
Nova frowned ...

After flying around the wall for a short while, Nova spotted what he had been looking for. An entrance to the city emerged from behind a cluster of tall watchtowers, revealing itself as he circled around to the forest-facing side.
A giant gate made from some kind of metal he had never seen before dominated the opening, its surface gleaming with an oily rainbow sheen that shifted colors as he moved.
Three figures stood guard in front of it, each one wearing completely d...

Nova descended through the crisp air, catching a few updrafts as he navigated toward the familiar wooden structure below. The cabin sat exactly where he had left it, nestled between an opening in the towering trees.
He landed softly on the ground, then folded his wings back into his back as he approached the cabin entrance, taking care to step only on bare ground rather than the network of roots that sprawled across the forest floor. Every root could potentially be connected to some anc...

With charred skin and blinded eyes, Nova could only rely on his ears to detect the incoming monsters soaring through the sky. It was, in no uncertain terms, a dire situation. His flesh still smoldered from the rocket spell's backlash, and blood seeped from cracks in his burned skin. Every nerve screamed in protest.
‘These birds better not be as strong as that guardian! If they are… Well, it would be bad.’
Seeing no easy way out, he started gathering essence once aga...

Hey everyone, thank you for following the story so far and for all your support!
Unfortunately, I have decided to take a break from posting chapters for a month or so, the reason being some issues in my life that need more attention than I'm able to give them right now.
I'll still be writing, so there's no worry that I'll drop this story. I'm even working on getting the first book ready for Amazon. However, the stress of having to write every day on top of everything else has star...

Nova hurried to get rid of the root around his ankle, pulling it out of the ground. But it only followed after, revealing more of the root every time he pulled. It was harder than steel, somehow enhanced by the essence of the forest.
‘This is trouble! I can’t use fire, because that would turn the entire forest against me. I might still be able to reason with this guy, as long as I don’t hurt the trees. But I need to get higher, staying near the ground will kill me if all the r...

Now Anny stood in the middle of the protective formation, ready to absorb the rest of the kilosouls. She seemed eager, grabbing the first handful and starting the absorption right away.
Unlike Nova's dramatic transformation, her power increase was steady and controlled. She had learned to manage large influxes of energy through her beast cultivation, and her body was already capable of handling the increased energy with ease. The recent corrections Nova had made seemed to help as well, ...

Nova stood in the center of the chamber, surrounded by the protective formations he had carefully laid down. Over three hundred kilosouls floated before him, ready to be absorbed, each one pulsing with energy.
Anny sat nearby on a bedroll, watching with less engagement than he expected. Her grey eyes seemed distant, as if she was staring through him rather than at him. Her fingers drummed against her knee in an absent rhythm.
‘Still dissatisfied with the plan? Or considering...

Nova burst through the water surface with great speed, landing directly on the dry surface of the final room. The mix of cool air and warm sunlight felt extremely refreshing after being in the dim blue light for so long.
Anny was already there ahead of him, standing with her back turned while she stretched her neck in slow, deliberate motions. The gills along her throat sealed themselves, and water dripped from her hands as the webbing between her fingers gradually receded into normal f...

The king leaned back in his throne of silver seafoam, releasing the grip on his trident and letting it fall to the ground. “...Perhaps I have been… too stubborn. Perhaps I have been too scared of the truth to face it…”
He turned to his two children, no longer with a face of authority and power, but of humility, of love. “But what a harsh truth it is…”
Princess Naia's eyes narrowed. "What truth, Father?" Her voice carried an edge Nova hadn't heard before.
"...Na...

The journey to the king's throne chamber took them through the highest parts of the palace. Prince Nereon led the way, cutting through the water with barely a sound, while Princess Naia swam beside Nova and Anny.
The passages here were different from the rest of the palace. Where the lower levels had been works of art, these corridors spoke of ancient powers. The walls were carved from living rock that pulsed with a deep, rhythmic glow, like the heartbeat of some massive creature. Veins...

The room fell silent after Nova's suggestion. The gentle current that moved through the chamber seemed to slow, carrying with it the tension that had suddenly filled the space.
Then, as if a dam had burst, everyone began speaking at once.
"That seems needlessly complicated," Prince Nereon said, carrying a clear look of skepticism. His muscular arms crossed over his chest as he studied Nova with calculating eyes.
Princess Naia spoke over her brother, moving one hand to cover ...

As the leviathan landed on the coral reefs below, Nova turned to his companions. Their expressions held both awe and concern. He conjured the Mermaid's Echo again, no longer able to speak freely underwater. "I could not take the chance, Anny. You lost your protection."

The days blurred together as they pushed deeper into the underwater realm. Each battle grew more vicious than the last, testing their limits in ways the previous floors never had.
Princess Naia proved herself more capable than anyone expected. What began as hesitant strikes from behind their protection evolved into confident combat alongside them. She learned to read the flow of battle, striking when enemies were distracted and retreating before retaliation could find her.
Anny ad...

"That should be enough, Princess," the sphere in Nova's hand uttered. The voice flowed more naturally now, having absorbed enough vocabulary to form coherent sentences. Each word carried the musical quality of Princess Naia's speech, only somewhat compressed through the magical device. "Thank you for your help."
Hearing Nova's words through the sphere, Princess Naia nodded eagerly. Her silver tiara caught the blue light as she moved, casting tiny rainbows across the coral walls. "I'm ha...

The newly formed trio had found a small room further down the dungeon, just as Princess Naia had promised. Tucked away from the main corridor, the chamber offered a brief sanctuary from the dangers lurking throughout the ninth floor. Thick walls of living coral formed a natural barrier against intruders, while bioluminescent anemones cast gentle blue light across the space.
Nova sat atop one of the larger anemones, having bandaged the worst of his wounds. The creature's soft tentacles y...

The princess swam up to the barrier, studying it with familiarity. "The barrier can only be deactivated by the staff," she explained. "But I need you to do it for me. I can't lift it on my own as part of my restrictions."
Nova approached cautiously. The staff's moonlike orb pulsed with powerful magic, glowing brighter as they neared the barrier.
The princess guided his hands to join hers on the staff. "Can you feel the mechanism?"
Nova nodded again, sensing the channels of e...
