So many questions were running through our heads while trying to decide if we should leave Grenada for the US or not. For insurance purposes we either needed to stay in Grenada or get closer to Florida before the start of hurricane season. A big part of the decision making process was making sure we knew all of our options as far as different paths we could take. Turns out there are a lot of options which is a good thing-- in case the weather decides to change on us.

As you can tell from our most recent posts, safety is huge for us. We don’t want to cause any damage to our boat or ourselves, so putting proper priority on safety gear and applications is essential. While it might be romantic to just sail into the sunset with no plan, it’s not safe. I decided to write this week a little about the other ways we ensure safety rather than just using our brains!
Buddy boating is a great option for upping safety. While Jeremiah a...

Wow, it feels like forever since we’ve had the wind in our sails. We are so excited to get back on the water again, but before we head out, we have to make sure everything is in order. As we prepare for our longest passage yet, we have made lists of everything we need to do and have. Of course prepping and planning are tedious and we would rather just go, but it helps to ease some anxiety. We also want to know/remember what to do in case something out of the ordinary were ...

Big decisions are so difficult to make! For the last month or so we’ve thrown around the idea of sailing back to the United States. It seemed to be our daily topic for discussion-- not only between Jeremiah and myself, but also among all the other cruisers. Why on Earth would we want to sail back to the US when we are in the prime location for hurricane season? Well, the answer is actually pretty simple! We are getting stir crazy; we want to explore, sail and discover new places!

Calypso is pretty high tech when compared to a lot of the boats cruising around. She’s been designed well and we’ve upgraded quite a few items such as new solar, a wind generator, new Lithium Iron batteries and such. She’s pretty much on point!
There has been one issue, however. Calypso hasn’t been able to charge her house bank from the engine alternators. This means that the only source of charging the house bank (which everything runs off of) is the solar, wind generator and d...

As we know by now, COVID-19 is affecting the lives of everyone in the world both directly and indirectly. For us personally, a major challenge has been food supply. Getting food from the grocery store is already difficult as a cruiser, but it has become a major challenge as of late. Once the virus made its way over here, I knew it would be tough to get food, but it has proven to be way worse than I originally thought. While we typically have a stocked boat, I’ve quickly learned just how imp...

You already know that I am all about safety gear for my family and friends while on board, but did you know that also includes safety gear for our home? We have to make sure Calypso is protected so she can protect us. Have you ever heard of high-water alarms? Well, I sure didn’t until a very good friend suggested that we buy some for the boat. We did some research and decided to take his advice. Let me tell you how thankful I am that we bought those little $10.00 gadgets a...

Who doesn’t like some good swag?? Gecko swag is a big part of being a patron--we try to do our best to ensure you are getting high quality products. Over the past 5 years we’ve had many different types of swag. Some examples are stickers, beer koozies, Christmas cards, pictures, calendars, shirts and hats.
When we first started doing swag, we wanted to quality check everything, so we had it all shipped directly to us. This was easy at the time because we were still living on l...

The most important part about the sailing lifestyle is safety. Typically, when you think about safety gear aboard a vessel, the main products are your ditch bag, EPIRB, fire extinguishers and so on. We don’t typically see or hear other cruisers talk about personal safety gear besides their life jackets and tether! Quite honestly, I hardly see any of the cruising community wearing non traditional personal safety gear at all.
Aboard Calypso, it’s a different story. For Jer...

COVID-19 is still in its early stages, but has already impacted all of our lives. People have begun to panic and are trying to gather supplies reactively. Jeremiah and I have always been proactive and planned for something like this Pandemic to occur while living on land. We weren’t quite sure what would take place, but we knew something would eventually happen that could limit our access to everyday essentials. We took it upon ourselves to always have tote storage bins fully stocked with f...

As you know, we recently put Calypso in the water where she belongs. Shortly before splashing I found the galley to have a minor bug infestation. So, I quickly went to work...Got rid of all the food that was onboard and cleaned out each food locker. I knew that I had a big provisioning trip ahead of me so we rented a car and pulled on a dock right after splashing.
Yesterday I finished cleaning everything up, we were ready to bring food on the boat! I made my lists and went to bed....

I'm so excited to announce that the new rudder finally made it’s way to the boat! They installed it the other day and it fits perfectly. Calypso has been moved to the area of the yard designated for bottom painting and is scheduled to be painted in the next couple of days. That should be the final item we need before splashing. This worked out because the special anti-fouling paint we use (Vivid) took longer to ship to Grenada than the rudder. If the rudder issue hadn't happened, we would'v...
