Teardown of a big (faulty) ozone generator

This unit is very powerful, but also potentially a shock, fire and RF jamming risk.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VSmWxC14JY

It is probably best used in a grounded metal case with a fan to stir the air and cool it.  But it is really just suited to fairly extreme ozone applications.

Inside a cheap, simple and hackable lithium charger

A deliberately simple video, mainly because I've been losing a lot of sleep recently.  Largely due to my brother Ralfy not understanding my nocturnal lifestyle.  (A lot of technical people seem to work at night.)

https://youtu.be/stg9RkuZVPw

A worthy charger though.  It uses the very common charge circuitry found in many rechargeable products.

Buckfast carbonation experiment

Yes - another shameless clickbait thumbnail.  Because they do actually have the desired effect.

I'm not doing a huge number of these carbonation videos, as the novelty will probably wear off quite quickly.  But let me know if you like them.

Yeah, sorry. Another ioniser video

The unique feature of this one is that it has a green LED power indicator.  That might sound a bit of an anticlimax, but back when this unit was made about 40 years ago, a common 5mm green LED was actually something special.  It was used to convey an element of sophistication in the same way blue LEDs are routinely abused now.

The ioniser was sold to help pacify people who wore synthetic fabric clothes, sat on sweaty plastic seats on nylon carpet while using hot flickery video...

Inside one of the first electronic games

This may seem like a simple and still popular game, but it has an absolutely epic history as one of the very first computerised games.

Inside the CDI module (more sand!)

Here's the CDI (Capacitive Discharge Ignition) module from the quad/scooter loom.

https://youtu.be/R1wrrsb3RDk

Its purpose is to charge a capacitor from the high voltage winding on the alternator/magneto, and then dump that charge through the primary of the ignition/spark coil to create a high voltage spark at the tip of the spark plug when the engine flywheel triggers a sensor.

The quad loom is the gift that keeps on giving....

How low can they go?   How about potting the PCB in sand with a thin layer of resin on top.

I have to admit that I really enjoyed exploring this wiring system.  It taught me a lot about the electrical system used in things like quads and scooters.

I'm not finished though.  I'm going to try and de-pot some of the resin encapsulated components.

New globe generators with extra customisation

Thanks to Flemming's suggestion of using the hull command, I've now made the openscad olive lamp generator much more versatile.  It can create the lamps shown above by defining a base sphere size, a tip sphere size and the total height of the globe.
I've also added the facility to customise the base length, diameter and inner LED hole size.

Note that the hull command in the script results in MUCH longer processing times.  Especially with the high numbers of facets in smooth...

Not a video (yet) - quad wiring loom

This is one of those random things I found on eBay.  It's the wiring loom for a quad bike.

The loom includes a keyswitch, handlebar mount control, magneto with high and low voltage windings and timing detector, Capacitive discharge ignition module, spark coil, spark plug, rectifier/regulator, starter relay and battery terminals.

It was interesting to explore and trace out all the wires and their functions.

The rectifier/regulator and CDI (Capacitive Discharge Ignition) ...

I found ONE foam pump seller

Remember the automatic foaming soap dispenser?  I was so intrigued by the dedicated foam pump that I looked on eBay to see if I could find them as a bare component.

For those of you with 3D printers.

Here are some files to play with:-

The lights are all hollow designs and should be printed without support to avoid filling the inside with light blocking plastic.  A raft is recommended if your software offers that.  These have all been tested on a Cetus 2 with clear and white PLA.

Don't use vase mode.  The models are hollow already.

cabochon.scad will let you create custom shaped cabochon lights.  The base is a standard size designed for adding a bit of...

Teardown of a 20 year old LED torch

This 20 year old flashlight is probably one of the first LED torches ever manufactured.

It was launched just after Nichia had started manufacturing the first white LEDs, and cost an absolute fortune at the time.

https://youtu.be/cxxPEa_N-Ic

By modern standards it's a bit tame.  But back then it was EPIC, since the previous torches had all been tungsten lamp based.

More 3D printed Christmas lights.

The novelty hasn't worn off yet.  I was hoping to make the traditional olive shaped lamps customisable, but the algorithm is super-complex where the sides touch the round sections.  I think I may actually have found my first real use for geometry equations.  I just made these ones a fixed size by making adjustments visually.

The standard white PLA filament is surprisingly good in this application.  It really looks like retro lamps.  Another nice thing about the ...
