Portfolio Update: March 2025

Overview:

The market was a little scary over the last month, and at one point it looked like we would have further issues with the Continuing Resolution which would lead to a government shutdown.

Luckily, Congress was able to push through a bill which will leave us funded until September, and the on-off tariff dance has at least slowed down.

These positive factors have at least temporarily ended the market route, and VIX has dropped from a high of 27 to ab...

State of CG Address from Barack Obama

Obama delivers the circumstances on CG and explains cb grinding. Forgive the AI-voice. I recorded with my webcam and mic simultaneously on accident, and it sounded like garbage. I had to run it through several voice cleaners, and it still sounded like garbage. So I changed the audio to Obama instead.

Portfolio Update: February 2025

We are already well underway into the new year, and it's been rife with changes to our country's economics. There are more changes coming, with likely shifts in tax structure and trade policy.

Through it all, we must make it our goal to focus on the factors we can control. If the market does well, then our long positions will benefit. If the market does poorly, then we should bargain-hunt opportunities to pick up shares while they're cheap. Or, even more simply, just average down into i...

Portfolio Update: December 2024

It's the end of the year already, somehow. And with the end of the year, it is time to move some positions around for tax purposes.

Since my last update in October, I withdrew $12,000 from my taxable accounts to move the money to my Schwab i401(k) retirement account. This will make my cumulative withdrawals from my Merrill taxable accounts to $16,000.

The intention in these moves is to reduce my taxable income from my regular work as a YouTub...

Portfolio Update: April 2024 and the AAPL Effect

Big Reality Check

Every once in a while, reality comes to bite you. So far in 2024, I'm feeling that bite.

My largest portfolio is in Merrill Edge, my flagship broker. It's heavily invested in the NASDAQ ETFs with an oversized position in AAPL. Zoomed out, you can see the effect of this volatility. Although It's had some high peaks and nasty troughs, I am beating the S&P since I opened the account.

Should I start a corporation for my trading portfolio?

tl;dr: Only set up an LLC for trading if you are 100% sure you will not need to make withdrawals until you are 59 1/2, or if you use expensive equipment like a Bloomberg Terminal to trade. Otherwise, continue trading in a personal account and find another activity to fund your retirement accounts beyond your IRA.

Week 2 Challenge: Reflect on Account Types

First of all, forgive me if my formatting is no fun. I’m at a Nissan dealer getting repairs done after a safety recall. But life ticks on, and luckily I can do Patreon from my phone.

Last week, I decided I to make a weekly challenge to strengthen our financial wellness. I don’t think anyone actually read it.

But this week, let’s try again.

Week 1 challenge:

Last week, I challenged everyone to go through their recurring charges to their bank or credit card and...

Weighing dividend investing vs indexed ETF management

Everything has its pros and cons. I have shifted into dividend ETFs at an accelerated pace this year because my balance would allow me to reach my income goals.

Is this the right move for you, or are you better off with indexed ETF management?

How to set your 2022 portfolio goals and backward plan to achieve them

Most people don't set goals, so they never know if they're on pace to fulfil their needs. This clip talks about the importance of goal setting and how to work backwards to achieve the with the lowest effort and minimal risk.

My 2022 goals:

1) $21,600/year in dividend.

2) Identify a means to minimize reinvestment risk with income trading.

3) Trade 23x 0.30 delta strangles at a time.

The Problem

Over the past few weeks, I've had many (not a few, but many) people contacting me with photos of their accounts getting wrecked. Sometimes, they're 50+% losses accrued during a short duration.

In most cases, it is the result of someone's vertical spreads getting blown out. Occasionally, someone will suffer a big loss when their naked...

Forgive the low-end formatting. I’m writing this on mobile instead of a desktop.

I don’t get a lot of engagement on Patreon posts, and I think that’s because those of you who do read them do so straight from your email. This one time, I’m going to ask you guys to log in and comment some feedback. I need the input.

Tax-Loss Harvesting Time, EOY 2021 Tips & Wash Sale Dodging

It's the end of October, so it is time to start considering which losing positions we want to close for the tax deduction.

Tax rates on your gains can range from 0% long-term capital gains in a low income earner's account, all the way up to 37% for the highest earners. Since 2021 has been a great year for stocks, I assume that most of us are facing capital gains tax (if you're red for the year, buy more SPY).

As we all know, we can deduct our losses from our gains to r...

Literally Free Insurance (Freeloader)

During my Freeloader Challenge activity, I came across a pair of websites that offer free life insurance. I know a lot of Theta Gangsters are skeptical of life insurance because you have to pay a premium, and that premium is better invested in the S&P.

Good news, you can get a degree of life insurance for free. It is not a lot, but it is enough to pay for your own cremation. For me, this free life insurance also ensures that my Freeloader Challenge goals will be met, dead or alive.<...

The only candlestick patterns I take seriously

I haven't made any content on candlestick patterns since my first shot at creating Kamikaze Cash in 2017. By request, I am reexploring candlesticks now that my technical analysis approach is more developed than it was 4 years ago.

Keep in mind that stocks do all sorts of things for all sorts of reasons. Candlesticks are strongest when they are corroborated with other technical analysis indicators. If you identify a bullish engulfing pattern just as RSI pushes above 50 and MACD crosses o...

Establishing & Managing Short Strangles for High PoP

I have been gradually moving away from the wheel strategy and toward undefined risk strategies over the past several months. Undefined risk strategies (short strangles and straddles and their derivatives) are more efficient on buying power, award higher premiums, and offer more management options.

In exchange for these advantages, the strangle seller goes into management mode immediately after opening the trade. The trader must frequently view the underlying stock's price action to dete...

Boss-Level Calendar Spread Management

Calendar spreads involve both buying and selling options with different expiration dates. Sometimes, they will also have different strike prices. An example of this is the Poor Man's Covered Call (PMCC).

The goal of a calendar spread is to have the short contract expire OTM so that you can realize the full premium from shorting it. Or, you can choose to take profits early.  Your long option does no...

Should you sell "sloppy seconds?"

In this post, I explore the opportunity to sell 0 DTE options with >99% Probability of Profit. This means selling short puts or covered calls very deep Out-of-the-Money (OTM). Typically, this entails offering up your own buying power in exchange for a very small (<$10) compensation. Is it worth it?

Despite this being a seemingly silly move, I am sure I am not the only one who has considered selling a couple of absurdly OTM options in exchange for lunch money.

Growth vs. Income in QQQ-derivatives

On Discord, we often have discussions on growth vs. income. Since we are mostly all Theta Gang traders, we gravitate toward income-generating strategies by using both defined and undefined risk spreads or Wheel trades to create cash flow. In other words, we find ways to manufacture dividends, even on stocks that don't pay dividends.

At some point, traders like myself become interested in putting some of our portfolios into buy-and-hold positions. Since we may not have the time, en...

This post will discuss how I have managed my meme stock plays this month and achieved a degree of success. This is different than my failed approach in January.

MACD: My Favorite Technical Indicator

"Moving Average Convergence-Divergence" is a mouthful, so "MACD" (Mac-Dee) is the name of my favorite technical analysis indicator.

MACD is all about measuring momentum. It will tell you when buyers have reclaimed control of a stock, or when buyers are getting exhausted and sellers take over. If you trade just MACD and no other technical indicators, you will still have a significant edge when determining a stock's most likely direction.

What is MACD measuring?<...
