Fall of the Last Dragon Rider - 024 Enduring Pain

“That seems like a foolish idea, but like you said, it might actually work.”

“I know!” Ava exclaimed after Kaen heard her idea.  “I mean, think about it. You have a poison-resist skill and a disease-resist skill now.  Almost no one ever gets those because no one can endure those things and survive.”

Kaen scratched the side of his cheek a few times, feeling his nails dig deeper than usual and trying to remember the last time he had trimmed them.

“So yo...

Fall of the Last Dragon Rider - 023 Special Connections

The night with Callie, Hess and Sulenda had been a salve that both Kaen and Ava needed more than they realized.  Seeing that little girl curled up between three dragons, a hand resting on one of the eggs as she slept, reminded them both how precious life was.

“Can I come again soon?” Callie asked as Hess clipped her in between Sulenda and him on Pammon.

“Anytime I am free, and if Mom and Dad say it’s ok,” Kaen replied.  “Just make sure that you are doing your...

“I won’t ask because I’m not sure I can understand what you just said,” Bren said as he tried to understand what had just happened. “I expected you to do what you always do, but not like that… not like…”

“Able to see your abilities and block them?” Kaen answered.  “That last ability you used… it’s a level forty skill, right?”

Bren chuckled and nodded.  “Blade dance.  Most won’t ever get that option, but somehow I did.  The fact y...

The Girl Who Killed a God - 036 Taking the Fight to Them

Max continued to watch Grace as she moved the barrel they had filled with liquid onto a small cart.

“You look… relaxed?” he half asked, half stated.  “For someone about to do what you’re going to attempt, you’re smiling and not like you’ve gone crazy.”

Bobbing her head, Grace gently set the barrel down and then began tying the rope to secure it.

“I told Levi a little bit about what I have to do. I know he doesn’t fully understand, but he told me to m...

Fall of the Last Dragon Rider - 021 Breaking Limits

Grateful for his high constitution, Kaen ignored the bruises and red marks all over his body and continued to focus on the sound he heard coming toward him.

His sword barely blocked Phillip's attack, and a slight sound told him to take a step back.

The kick missed as it came low at his legs, a foot grinding into the dirt slightly, and Kaen lifted his shield, preparing for what he could hear coming at his head.

The attack changed as the sound vanished, and Kaen’s mind recal...

Fall of the Last Dragon Rider - 020 Being Behind in Preparation

Kaen could feel Aldric’s and Herb’s gaze even though Pammon was lounging on the floor of the cave behind both men.

Each had sat there mulling over the news of what had happened to the elves and tried to consider what it might mean for Ebonmount and others.

“This spell that he cast at you when you fought and missed… was it a wand?” Aldric asked.

Shrugging, Kaen picked up his cup and sipped the watered-down wine.  “I honestly don’t know.  Hess had menti...

Ultimate Level 1 - Chapter 111 - Long walks

Max finished reading and copying the book Adam had loaned him.  He was only allowed to have it for one whole day and would make the most of it.

Every rare spawn, boss, and anything else he considered worthy of facing within the capital went into his notebook.

Tanila had joined him in the private room again, both occasionally comparing notes before returning to the books they had acquired.

Phaius found himself pacing around the plain reception room.

He knew he was being forced to wait.  Requesting this meeting weakened his position, but there was no other choice.

Some had been forced to wait for decades and even centuries for an audience like the one he had requested.

His offer of power to speed up this meeting revealed how weak he was and how much he needed help.

His frustration grew after the first week had ended and as the second week was coming ...

Max closed both eyes and sighed.  After that one ended, he took another deep breath and let it out slowly.  “We should not talk about these things… if we do, it will attract attention, and if you got a quest, one of us would die.”

Grace shivered at those last words, seeing Max open his eyes and a darkness hiding deep within looking at her.

“I… I’m sorry for prying. I just knew… forget it.  What am I supposed to do now?”

They scouted for half a day, flying high above the land at the edge of the clouds, knowing this was the safest spot to travel while also being able to look for Stioks and Juthom.

Everyone and everything is dead… we haven’t seen a single person alive…

The pain in Pammon’s tone barely compared to the rage his friend felt at that truth.  It was hard enough for Kaen to keep his own emotions in check.  He was angry. Angry at himself for believing Stio...

The Girl Who Killed a God - 033 Figuring Out Clues

Lilly trotted next to Grace as she weaved through the burnt buildings to the first of her new hiding spots.  They were further away from her old one, but she didn’t want to risk keeping everything in location and losing it all in one blow as last time.

Pulling the brick she had found in a hearth that had been loose, Grace put the gold coin she had inside.  There wasn’t anything but an extra dagger she had taken from a guard, and for a moment, she considered taking it but l...

Experience had made Kaen pack an entire basket of food.  He knew it was the one thing people didn’t have in times of war, and even though it was most of what he had stored for his trips, he shared it willingly, seeing the eyes of those who got a small piece of meat and some hard bread.

Each one bowed and thanked him for his kindness before moving off to enjoy it while they waited for a pot of broth that was being cooked to satisfy their hungry stomachs.

Max had been surprised at how empty the streets were as he left the coliseum.  The sound of the crowd inside echoed across the inner city as he made his way toward the bridge that led to his inn.

There on the bridge, waiting, were Fowl and Tanila, bouncing slightly as they saw him come into view.

Max smiled as he saw the two of them begin moving toward him.

The sensation Kaen felt as he experienced destruction through the eyes of Pammon almost overwhelmed him.  His lifestone burned, and that power was shared, causing the fire that came from inside his friend to burn hotter and last longer.

Pammon came from the east, just enough off the ground and at a speed that his fire would fall under him as he breathed, covering a solid twenty-yard-wide section.

The screams and shouts that came were lost behind them as Pammon flew.
