Hey everyone, got a layered process post for you all here. Taking this relatively spoiler-safe page where Rek borrows an aerodyne from a hapless badguy pilot.
You'll notice I've got two pencil pages here. Originally the composition had a shot from the pilot's view with Rek's fist coming in at him, but I decided it was over-explaining what was going on. Feels just a little more kinetic going straight from the throat-grab to the dude flying through the air. Very Mike Mignola influenced ...

A little something for anyone interested in dissecting how I constructed this year's WW1 Christmas Truce image. Included both PSD and Clip Studio formats (see attached), as well as the full-size JPEG. Enjoy!

Happy New Year everyone, hope you've had a warm holiday season. Here's the latest batch of figure warmups I do before each comic inking session, or even on non-comic days where I need to just keep training the drawing muscles. If you notice some recurring pose themes, that's no coincidence - some of these are planning out poses for use in the final chapter of the comic, so you may see them again, all finished up, in the book.
There'll be another Patreon update for a hi...

A few livestreams ago I took the 90th figure sketch of Wyit and gave it a little clothing, cleanup and coloring. Pretty pleased with how it came out, and I think a few people might appreciate having the layered files on hand for close up study, so here you go! Included a large JPG, and both Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop PSD formats.

BOOF. Got a bigger pile of figure drawings for you all to feast on this time. In this batch I noticed the linework cleaning up JUST a little more than the previous ones. Pretty cool to observe your own progression in real time like that.
As always, feel welcome to use them for your own artwork however you like, whether it's as a sketch base for your own oc's or for my characters, or just as pose reference, or whatever your imagination comes up with. Enjoy!

Digging into some of the old stuff from the early days of the comic here. This is from the scrapped 250-page first draft of the comic which I was pitching around to publishers in 2017. None of them were interested then (which was probably good for me in the long run - I'm having way more fun working on this indie with all of you than I would be in NDA corporate publishing hell).
Wyit and Rek haven't changed TOO drastically, but back then the Colonel and her Commandos were vagu...

Here's one I never posted anywhere online, aside from showing it privately to a tiny handful of people back when I was pitching the comic idea around.
Like all my character designs, Wyit initially started off a little too complex, too many little fur pattern things going on that would become complicated when inking a massive book like this. The ear frills and cheetah-like "tears" around his eyes were neat, but added way too much time to the inks and competed for focus with his eyes. Sti...

Hey everyone! Hope you're doing well, just a small drawing share today before I get to work on the livestream.
I thought I lost these images when I accidentally wiped my iPad in 2017, but lo and behold I was browsing through a thumb drive and found these two planes I made while developing my short film animatic Aerovenge in late 2015.
These were drawn back when I was trying ...

Here's the next round of figure drawings. Definitely some more energy and proportionality in these than the previous batch. I really can't emphasize how helpful doing these before each inking session has been.
By the way, you're all welcome to use any of my rough sketches for your own drawing practice or inking & coloring over, whether it's fanart of my characters or redrawing it for your characters (I just ask that you include a @reaganlodge credit or link somewhere if you pos...

If you've been able to tune in to the first 45-60 minutes of my Twitch livestreams you'll notice I've been doing about 3 character pose sketches before getting into my page inking.
Previously I was of the mindset that you don't need 'warm ups' and can just warm up by diving straight into the main work, but I noticed my character anatomy started getting a little goopy in the comic pages. Sometimes my comic pages are nothing but environments with a few minimal character figures or silhou...

Went digging around in some folders, found some old treasures.
First image is one of the early (2017?) Clip Studio drawings I did while trying to figure out the design for the Fenathkin military's battleships. I had been playing with that eagle-like sharky prow for a while, but it went through some really insane phases like the one you see here. The idea for the lower part of the ship to open up and reveal a devastating energy cannon was inspired a bit by the jaw parts on the Magitek A...

What's up everyone, after seeing how many people loved this image I thought it'd be a good one to put the layered PSD and CSP files up on Patreon for your study and enjoyment.
I think I organized the layer groups a little more tidily than in previous images, so hopefully you find this informative!

So here's an image from Summer 2016, WAY back before I even started drawing any comic pages and only had the beginning and ending figured out. Rek didn't have the cloak, and Wyit at the time had tufted ears! I was playing with the idea of making him look a little weirder and Jim Henson-ish, but it added too much drawing time and jumbled his silhouette too much.
Back then I was going to pitch the comic on its premise alone, in the hopes that a publisher would pick it up, and this was on...

Working out some ideas for a Fenathkin cuirass-type armored vest which Wyit acquires at some point. The bottom page was the first round of ideas, and the top one was most recent.
Trying to get that perfect balance of near-medieval armor meant to protect vital organs from blades AND bullets. Still think there's a long ways to go before the design feels totally there so expect to see me play around with this some more and post additional sketches here.
I DO think there's som...

Lots of new faces joining the Patreon lately, hello everyone! Hope you enjoy the exclusive content here.
Thought I'd put the layered files up for this guy so you can all get a look at how I stack my inks, colors and effects for a fairly simple character drawing.

Inked this page in tonight's livestream, thought it was a fairly decent snapshot of my inking process since there's not a ton of complicated layers in it (yet) so I selected this for CSP file (see attached) and full-resolution JPEG sharing here. I went REALLY on the nose with the Mignola shadows in this page.
Also just did a screentone variant for fun as I occasionally do, but I liked this one so much I figured I'd keep it exclusive to Patreon for now. Thought it captured that nightmari...

Some more sketchbook and warmup drawings. Trying to get in the habit of doing 1 or 2 background character sketches a day, first as a practice thing, and also so I have a library of character ideas I can pull from if I need to populate my comic pages with interesting single-scene characters.

Sgt Rek and the Colonel have the most difficult figures for me to stay on-model with; Rek because he's huge and I have a tendency to draw characters with tapered-anatomy (ie: smaller hands/feet, bigger mid-areas), when he's supposed to have that Humberto Ramos early 2000s Image Comics big-fisted chunkiness to him.
The Colonel on the other hand is hard because:
- She's got digitigrade legs (normally that "Zootopia Plantigrade" look is easier for me)
- Not j...

Some of you may recall around 2015ish I did worldbuilding collab project called Empire of the New Sun with the artist known as Jennadelle. Around the end of the project I was trying to apply to film studios for storyboarding work, and this was my first animatic, which takes place in the EoTNS (proto-WYIT) world.
The frame speed might be a little too fast for some, so I suggest viewing at .75 speed.

Hey everyone, thought I'd share this page as an example of what goes on under the hood for my larger, more visually busy compositions. You can see what I ended up with, as well as one alternate version I inked but decided to scrap, and the original sketch/thumbnail layer when I was composing it out. The scrapped ink version felt too much like a city street than the inside of a giant airship
I'll probably post this page to social media this week to keep up the promotion momentum, but th...

Greetings, Legionnaires!
It's been several weeks since the last update, so let me first start off by thanking you all for sticking around despite the fast & loose approach to this Patreon. I know this is more of a "tipjar with some behind the scenes stuff" but I do feel the itch when I haven't filled the content trough here recently enough. Been really, REALLY busy with launch-related materials for the book and helping my dad with farm labor and fruit deliveries.

A REALLY early bit of visual development. In 2016 I was working on storyboards for my portfolio to apply to film studios with, which is when I got struck with the idea for Wyit. Or, more specifically, how to take the old character from my FLIGHT comics and give him a story I had the inner fire to tell and finish.
Within a week I knew what the beginning and ending of the story were, but the stuff in between was hazy and mysterious. I was just piecing together the story from images that'...

Hey everyone, hope you're having a fine start to your week! Here's some aircraft drawings I did while getting my car serviced a few days ago.
To your left is a Fenathkin fighter-type aerodyne. The Fenathkins are canids, and I wanted their vehicles to echo their tendency towards long "snouted" shape themes. Also, I wanted to evoke a sort of Fantasy-Americana feel; checkerboard patterns (NYC taxis, pizza restaurants?), and a stretched out "cruiser" feel like hot rods or motorcyc...

Wyit and Rek hiding out inside an old skyship wreck after their escape from Varktown. I went and inked some pages ahead of this scene because we're about to get into some flashback/world-lore stuff that I'm getting sweaty palms just thinking about.
Also, wow, just noticed I'm now about $100 in monthly pledges. Thank you so very, very much, all of you. This has been a really rough summer, not gonna lie, but having your support has made this project more and more possible.

The way I work digitally in my comic is very modular, meaning I can easily make cosmetic changes if I figure out a better way to depict something appearing in it. In this case, Wyit's jacket which he acquires in the 2nd half of the story.
I've had the basic design down for a while and knew it had those prominent rolled sleeves we've seen in most my images. But, I've been a little vague about how its collar works, its hem length, pocket placement, and what the heck I should put on the sh...

Hey everyone, got a little peek at my sketchbook here, stuff I probably won't post publicly for a while (and not in high-res anyways).
On the left page I was trying to work out the signature firearms of the Fenathkans (the long ones on the left), and the Sabelians (the short ones on the right). These props don't feature heavily into the main characters', but they appear often enough in the background that I needed to make them look nice.
I think my short notes should be pretty s...

Rek just told us what's REALLY going on. Wyit needs some time alone to process it all.
WELCOME to the new Patrons who've joined since my last post! Great to have you on board.
I WAS going to show the underdrawing for this page, but so much of it was actually inked straight out (digitally of course) with only notional thumbnails underneath. For some reason when I draw big structures or stationary vehicles, I produce better work than if I were to do a more planned out underdrawing....
