Some Good News

So here's something worth mentioning: yesterday I finished pencils on the first new JL8 page in about four months.

One down, three to go.

Hope to have it ready to post soon. As as always, thank you for your incredible patience. This year has been...something else.

"Happiness Is A Warm Puppy"

In the words of the great Charles Schulz, "Happiness Is A Warm Puppy."

While I get back into the swing of drawing, I've been tackling some overdue commissions. This is a commission I decided to add some color to, and I think I'll make it a print in my online store. If you're interested, they'll be 9"x12" for $10. Visit yalestewart.bigcartel.com t...

Freedom!

After nearly a month, I'm finally free!

I had my follow-up appointment with my orthopedist and he gave me the all-clear to ditch the brace and return to work, and to say I'm excited is an understatement.

However, I will need to take it slow. Nearly four weeks of not using my wrist took more than a toll than I anticipated. Just this drawing alone--which took about an hour and a half--has me feeling fairly exhausted (not hurt! Just tired.), so I think I'll need to ease my way back i...

Another Update re: Health and Other Things

Hello, everyone!

Apologies for the radio silence. Recovering from DragonCon has taken some time, but my energy levels are back up, so I wanted to give you all a little update on how things are going.

First and foremost, my wrist is feeling much better, but I still have until next Wednesday before I go back in for a check-up to see where I stand with this awful brace. Hopefully they give me the all-clear, and I'll be back to drawing by that evening.

I wanted to say a big than...

Another Health Update

Went back to the orthopedist to get my wrist x-rayed. Turns out it was inflammation of the tendon (or a tendon, anyway), and I'm in a heat-mold hard brace for the next three weeks.

I'm sorry, folks. I'm gonna need you to be patient with me a little while longer. :(

DragonCon 2019

Hey there, all! In some good news, I'll be returning this weekend for the first time in four years as a guest at DragonCon in Atlanta, GA! Admittedly, I'm not sure how my injury will impact my time there, but I'll have merchandise and original art for sale, and most importantly, I'll be at my table happy to meet and talk and hang out with any and all fans that would like to come and see me! You'll be able to find me in Comic and Pop Artist Alley at table 305....

Health Update

So, Sunday night, my wrist got significantly worse, to where I had virtually zero range of motion and it was incredibly tender. I booked an appointment with an orthopedist, which I just returned from, who said that without an X-ray they couldn't really recommend a course of action, so I have to go back tomorrow to have that done. The wrist is feeling a little better than it was the last two days, but it's still pretty bad.

Anyway, I just feel like it's important for me to be as transpar...

A brief update!

I apologize for going radio-silent in the wake of last weekend's sale, but my life has essentially become one giant shipping effort. I know a lot of you expressed that there's no rush on getting your orders out, but you all were too generous to make you wait. I'm hoping to have all orders shipped out by the end of next week, with a few exceptions where I needed to order more inventory.

Thank you so much for all your patience! It means the world!

Thank You for Everything

I was planning on making a video, but I'm still too cough-y for that, so please accept this status instead.

I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who helped out with the sale this past weekend, whether you bought something or simply engaged with the post to help it reach more people and making it my best non-holiday sale ever. I was in a really rough spot, and when I asked for help, you all came out in droves. Words can't even begin to properly express my gratitude for your genero...

"Venom: Sinner Takes All #1," as reprinted in "Venom: Carnage Unleashed" (Marvel Comics)

Script by Larry Hama

Pencils by Greg Ludzniak

Inks by Scott Koblish

Colors by Tom Smith

Honestly, I'm not entirely sure how to eloquate my feelings on this panel, but I love the over-the-top-ness of it.

As crazy as it is, it really is a solid drawing. I do think that the cartoony-...

"Frankenstein," as reprinted in "Frankenstein: A Junji Ito Story Collection" (VIZ Media)

Written and drawn by Junji Ito

This panel rocks. First off, the rendering on The Monster's cloak is killer, and totally sells the threat he presents. The way Ito frames William is also masterful, tucked to the left (remember, manga is read right-to-left, so he's technically the second character you'd see), but also as he stands in front of the nearly-spot-blac...

"Frankenstein," as reprinted in "Frankenstein: A Junji Ito Story Collection" (VIZ Media)

Written and drawn by Junji Ito

Junji Ito is one of the greatest horror artists of all-time, but right now this panel is more appealing in that it feels like an accurate depiction of my current health. Just spent the second day within a week up at an Urgent Care, this time getting EKGs, x-rays, IVs and more.

"Devilman, Ch. 13: The Beginning of the End" as reprinted in "Devilman: The Classic Collection, Vol. 2" (Seven Seas Publishing)

Written and drawn by Go Nagai

For me, this is all about just awesome cartooning. These character designs are so broad and so unique and so expressive. It's just completely unapologetic cartooning that feels equal parts impressionistic and expressionistic. So many cartoonists of both the past and present (myself included) ...

Stepping much further back in time from the '70s to 1940, here's a panel from a Big Red McLane story by Fletcher Hanks. This is just such a no-frills panel. All you need to know is that Big Red is punching the crap out of a guy,...

So this one is a bit of a cheat, as I didn't decide to start snapping photos of awesome panels until the previous post, but once I did, I went back to some previous issues and grabbed some pics of panels that had stood out to me before. This is one of those panels.

A new series: Panel of the Day

As you may know, I'm currently dealing with a bout of bronchitis that has pretty effectively knocked me on my caboose; it's pretty hard to pencil and ink when you're violently coughing every 45 seconds. However, if I can't be productive at the drafting table, I figure I can find other ways to create some entertaining content.

A little background: months ago, I discovered the YouTube channel 2019-07-23 21:25:02 +0000 UTC View Post

"Our Fighting Forces #154," as reprinted in "Jack Kirby's The Losers" (DC Comics)

Written and drawn by Jack Kirby

Inked and lettered by D. Bruce Berry

Just look at this thing. This is a 1/9 panel (a panel the size of a single panel on a page with a 9-panel grid) and it packs more bone-crushing impact than most double-page spreads I see.

So many highlights I'm not even sure where to begin. Look at the acting; even...

I was wrong.

So, reports of my wellness were greatly exaggerated.

As soon as I posted about feeling better, symptoms started getting worse to the point where I actually needed to go see a doctor. Turns out, I've got bronchitis. The coughing itself isn't that terrible, but the meds I've been prescribed, well...I'm trying very hard to keep the nausea at bay as I type this, we'll say that much.

I'm sorry that things keep getting pushed back. I'm trying to sneak in work when I can, but I'm only ma...

All better.

Alright, I'm back.

I had a little illness last week that ended up knocking me on my butt a few days longer than anticipated, but I'm feeling good now, and back at the drawing table. I've finally got the next update completely thumbnailed out and have started drawing the first of four pages. I'm hoping to have the whole thing ready to post in three weeks, but I'll be sure to keep you all apprised of my progress in case any other things pop up.

Thanks for all the well wishes a...

JL8 #267 Update

Hey everyone! Some mildly unfortunate news: I was planning to have the new JL8 ready by today, but that's not going to happen. I ended up redrawing an entire page because I was really unhappy with it, and I only want to provide the best art I can, so that set me back quite a bit. I have one page totally finished, one page pencilled but needing to ink and color, and another to completely pencil, ink, and color. I'm hoping to have it ready by Friday, but sometime next week is probably more like...

HeroesCon

Hello, everyone!

I've finally returned home from HeroesCon! It was such a blast, and I can't thank everyone who came out to see me nearly enough. It's always such a pleasure getting to meet fans both new and old and talk about our shared love of comic books. It really helps energize me in every way it can.

I figured I ought to give a bit of an update now that I'm home. The prep for HeroesCon ended up being SUBSTANTIALLY more work than I'd initially anticipated. As such, my origina...
