Page Commentary No. 46

Gunwild: "Oh my goopness" kind of breaks the rule about Vanaa language that the words should actually both rhyme, sound "squishy," and have a similar meaning.

Gunwild: Those rules can bend with one exception, but aren't supposed to break with two. But I broke them here for effect.

Psu: Speaking of bend and break, I'm definitely bending the rules of page composition here but I think the effect is still super good and chaotic and big

Someone in the comments mentioned that the guards, who lost their rifles when they got spaced last time, should have had sidearms. I wanted to be like "They have them, one will show up next page, it's been in the script all along, we're not stupid!"

But I couldn't because that would be giving things away. Life on a weekly update schedule has its ups and downs.

We actually considered doing the same thing again where Mercy shows up in an opaque helmet and takes a page or two to show her face. But honestly, after seeing her fail in her only two previous missions, my thinking is that the audience is not going to be impressed with her for just showing up. Will she turn that impression around with this Botz-grabbing job...?

Gunwild: I like that first panel, it'd make a good desktop background or something.

Psu: Snoot.

Psu: It's a really pretty page, I think. The colors are all alien and very science fictiony. I don't get to play with light all the time but here with the atmospherics from being under water and just being under a cloudy sky, I think it looks rad.

Gunwild: I understand why people whisper in submarine movies when they're ...

Psu: Look, I have no idea what the actual properties of that liquid are. It appears to be non neutonian and dense enough that a full metal cyborg stays affloat on it. It's also viscous enough to pull like slime yet liquid enough to pool smoothly into cracks and crevices. And I have no idea what its actual functio...

Gunwild: The ring that holds the ball power source thing turning into wings was not planned from the ship's first appearance.

Psu: Man, I'm just thinking about how cool our comic is sometimes.

Gunwild: This page: first appearance of Theira's mandibles.

Psu: Heh, the whole wing thing and the mandible thing, this page had a lot of on the spot inventions! I think I always intended Theira to have mandibles, and they de...

There's a distinct possibility that every pinup featuring Motor Minx is going to feature her being cleaned like a particularly attractive car.

Anyway, the full pinup, coming in a few days, is fullbody and color and has a background, but here's this for now. It's actually good she won the poll, because we're planning on bringing her back soon. Shockingly soon!

The main thing I have to say about this page is that I'm sorry I screwed it up.

Not the idea for the rotating shields deflecting incoming kinetic projectiles, that's good. Or the way we got to show Theira nailing the shot without it working, so that she still comes off as capable without the story coming to an end right there. Or the silly tonal shift thing in the last panel, I like that too.

All that I'm pretty happy with, and I don't mind saying it. But I'm still ashamed of this page.<...

This phase, where things aren't colored or shaded yet, actually calls attention to a couple of things that I think Psu does really well. The work with both perspective and line weight gives you a really good sense of distance in the first panel, so you can get a picture of where everything is even when, for the moment, it's all untextured cardboard cutouts of sorts.

200th Update Spectacular

So, behind-the-scenes thing here, the comic that got me seriously into reading and collecting comics was Ultimate Spider-Man back in about the year 2001. Eventually that series hit 100 issues (all of them excellent), and the writer, Brian Michael Bendis, decided that a good way to celebrate that milestone would be a story about Peter Parker having a birthday.

The idea he then had was that he'd do another birthday every 100 issues. that didn't pan out, but it did stick with me that hit...

Gunwild: I call Maddy's wrist communicator her "Cuff-Link."

Psu: Man, we really haven't used the random holographic displays in a while. It's definitely a thing that wearable tech is big in Cassiopeia future. Like so much of it is an after thought but a lot of it provides extra layers of safety in case of random space fights and good always ready communication. It's super important!

Psu: On the art side of this page, I think I was just m...

Next update will be the one where we celebrate #200! It's actually a few more than 200 updates, but we didn't want to interrupt the story we were doing. Much as #100 was Maddy's birthday, this one will be Cassiopeia's. It won't be an extra-length one, but it will have this and then a cute little followup, probably a 4koma. Also, we haven't seen the Vraxiopeia kiddos in too long! People ask for them when we don't feature them.

Gunwild: Black and white!

Psu: Booo black and white! Kill that lazy artist.

Gunwild: Ehh, maybe Theira would prefer to have a "noir" character introduction... we know she's a fan of gangster movies.

Psu: Apart from the black and white, there's a lot of acting I like on this page. A lot! Theira sleeping and Talps looking tough. I think this next set of pages really set Theira as a quick fan favorite. Something about...

The characters we cut away to are subject to change, but these kinds of occasions are always good chances to bring back folks we haven't seen in a while. Last time, when Cassiopeia's race was starting, we got in Lefyne and Gleb and the Vraxiopeia colonists. This time we're going for a few more people at once... and is that somebody new?!

Gunwild: Surprising amount of actual science on this page.

Psu: Scoot Scoot Scoot

Gunwild: Well, not that part, obviously...

Psu: I think I remember not being too happy with this page when I first made it. A lot of style stuff started clashing in how I was drawing it, the colors are all over the place with warm and bright and cold colors that are all very high saturation. It has a poppy effect but I'm not sure it's...

June 2017 Pinup

In the future, it will be absurdly easy to make hyper-accurate digital representations of, say, famous sports champions. You know, pose them however you like, wearing whatever you can imagine, to produce your own pictures.

Some of those celebrities, though, I think you should hope will never find out. You might come to regret it!

There are a lot of ways a page can come together for a comic when a writer and artists are teaming up. With us, generally, it means that I write a script with a very specific number of panels, very specific dialogue beats, and exact instructions about every last image. Then Psu takes that and mostly draws it as written, but adjusts how things look to make more sense, because I'm not the best visual storyteller in this duo and I know it.

Another way some people are into is just kind of...

Gunwild: Kettlehead, that's just a Windows 3D Pipes screensaver.

Psu: Oh man you guys had no idea how long I looked forward to this page when I saw it in the early scripts.

Psu: It's so silly and totally unique to our gelatinous aliens and combined sense of humor. Kag (the orange pilot Vanaa) doing a platoon pose next to the bodies of his dizzy comrades is one of my favorite dumb jokes we've done.

Of note: I got to have and pitch the idea of Cupcake crying while clutching Maddy's hand in person instead of over Skype, and it went over great!

We're going to make panel 3 less scary-looking... slightly. But honestly, that bite-preventing facemask design from Silence of the Lambs? It's pretty spooky. Also, the last panel has been roughed out, but it's hidden here. They put down the swords, but this ain't over...

This weekend we've got a guest comic by Brellom all lined up, which as you can see is done art-wise. Even though the whole thing is drawn with where the dialogue will go in mind (you can probably see the empty spaces where it'll mostly go), tweaks may be made at the last second to accommodate art and story changes. We spend a lot of time having good ideas a little later than is convenient...

Psu: BUTT JOKE.

Psu: THE WHOLE REASON GUNWILD WROTE THIS CHAPTER

Gunwild: Okay, inside baseball here: at the time this came out, Hiveworks was still using tumblr for social media pretty regularly. And our tumblr preview image was panel 4 there. They wouldn't reblog it, since their blog was pretty all-ages.

Gunwild: I didn't blame 'em, but I'm still proud of the dumb joke and butt-related silliness. It's very Cassio...
