When a pokemon faints in a Mystery Dungeon, an interesting phenomenon occurs where the ley lines of the dungeon arrange themselves in such a way that they carry the pokemon out and near the entrance of the dungeon. Tail splitting for Vulpix may seem to be an indication of maturity or age, but it more accurately reflects personal emotional growth of the individual effected. It's uncommon but not impossible to see a very young Vulpix develop all 6 tails before adulthood, or an adult who only has 3 or 4 tails. Either way, a Vulpix must develop all 6 tails before being able to evolve into Ninetales.
