I can’t draw an April and not follow it up with an Irma! That’d be like Daphne with no Velma. Though Irma (very unfairly) has far fewer stans than Ms. Dinkley. But we’re getting sidetracked here. Winifred does not feel as though she’s gotten a fair deal as far as TMNT characters go. Wouldn’t Shelley have been a more suitable subject for the nerdy sidekick? Or if you want to embarrass someone with plainness, why not Bel? Where are those two, anyway?

Happy Halloween News

Between Nickelodeon All Star Brawl and the upcoming Shredder’s Revenge, the classic yellow jumpsuit April O’Neil has been getting a lot of attention lately. You might even be able to find an official costume at your local Halloween store! But Angela should know better than to try on costumes willy-nilly, unless she wants a sudden career in journalism. Wasn’t that how The Underburbs started? Has Angela forgotten already?

Nintendo 64 games are coming to the Switch, so I had to commemorate it somehow. No, I am not doing a Winifred 64, this was too much mental work to do twice. Thanks to whoever ripped those backgrounds so I could have an authentic Bowser Dark World backdrop.

Hayabusa

As I write this, we are only a few hours away from the reveal of the final character to be added to the Super Smash Bros Ultimate roster. I’m not foolish enough to pin my hopes on anything. I really hope they get really weird with it. Maybe they’ll go as far back into Nintendo’s history as possible, and we’ll get a deck of hanafuda cards as a character. But if I had my druthers, I’d pick the only remaining third party character to warrant at least a trilogy on the NES: Ninja Gaiden�...

Sketch to Finish IRL

Last weekend, which I am aware was still September, my girlfriend’s workplace held a pumpkin carving party and a viewing of Halloween 3, aka the best one. We might have jumped the gun a little bit, as our jack o’ lanterns are already in the garbage due to mold and flies. My girlfriend’s workplace is populated by Instagram goths who, though they are all very lovely people, seem to believe that Halloween is 45 days long.

Still, loved my four-eyed demon pumpkin while it lasted.

Just posted a Pear Angela, so you could probably guess what’s coming next. You generally can’t have one without the other. I think both characters are aware of what may happen to them at any given moment due to the whims of their creator. Angela is prone to roomier, stretchier clothing as a direct result. No Pumpkins Just Pears

Unrelated to the candy overdose. Drew this before the last two but never posted it. Don’t know how WG became my go-to when I have no other ideas, but here we are.

Candy Drain

Some curses can be physically removed, like poison from a snake bite. It can come in handy to have a friend who is biologically attuned to draining fluids. It can be a problem, however, when your blood is suddenly loaded with sweeteners. You’re supposed to spit the curse out, Win!

Tsk… not even October and Angela already overdid it. Not that I’d ever do such a thing, and wake up at three in the morning violently sh… never mind. Let’s just say my reaction was more temporary but far less fun to draw.

I don’t think Craig McCracken’s Netflix series Kid Cosmic gets talked about enough. It’s a good show, and the fact that it has a planned ending (three seasons) only makes it better in my book. Anyway, Jo is a character on that show.

Phatman’s Final Tag

Even in my youth, I rarely made characters directly for someone. One such exception was Phatman, the Mural Avenger, made for my friend Greg Burdett. He was into graffiti and skateboarding and hip hop like so many of us were in the mid-90s. Bookworm Sachi (final)

The shading and background appear! Procreate (the iPad drawing app I use) doesn’t have a gradient tool, so I just paint a gradient sort of thing in. I tend to experiment with textures while I do this, and I’m always afraid I do too much. I’m still happy with this, though I think maybe the outline around the mist should stand out a little more. It’s digital, so it’s never too late to make adjustments!

Bookworm Sachi (color)

I was given plenty of reference for the OC, but I altered them slightly because the colors were so faint that she’d look off next to Winifred’s darker, more contrasts outfit. The blouse on the bookworm is actually more accurate to the OC’s original color scheme. The transitional coloring is always the trickiest. Do I do a gradient, an intermediary color, or a spatter? Clearly I did the latter, as I feel that makes sense with the mist-based transformation of Winifred’s scroll.

Now it’s inked, so you begin to see some of the details. Sachi’s pigtails are made to resemble pen nibs. I made them turn into pencils in her bookworm form, because they feel more school-like. I also changed the pose on her upper right claw. It’s a small change, but stuff like that can add more personality to the character. But perhaps the most important change is making the background grey so I’m not cooking my eyeballs.
