Continuing my exploration of wood burning. I saw this method somewhere on YouTube, and thought I'd give it a try. First, diluting ammonium chloride in water and then painting it on my test design. I'd intended it to be a much more dramatic process. As it is, in order to attain any kind of drama, the footage needed to be exponentially sped up. Such is the process of learning new methods. I'm not sure yet how or where I might use this, but it's been highly entertaining trying my hand at it!

Wood burning has a long tradition and a very distinct look. Generally, I’d describe the technique as more like drawing even wispy. Every tutorial or tutorial example I could find for the process showed it in that way, as well. So in working out how to do this piece with its stark contrasts, a heavier hand was necessary.

One of my favorite aspects of the art of movie making is manipulating time. There are so many options for playing with how a thing is seen in this medium. Whether it's time lapse (which condenses footage), or slow motion (most effective shot in the highest quality possible), or even reversing film: I love exploring this aspect. "Slow Mo Trampoline" slows the act of jumping in various speeds. Ridiculously so in moments, so that a jump appears to be levitation.
If you have difficult...

Some of the things from today. First thing this morning, I stretched out on the floor for some yoga and much needed stretching. As I finished up, my shoe lay next to me, looking like a character in need of documentation. So I drew it in my sketchbook. The lava lamp offers beautiful shapes and forms, as always. The recently fallen branch on my walk offered a gelatinous texture in its heavy, brown fungus. Funny that this is today’s collection of imagery. I feel that it must be thematic, but a...

I am excited today to explore more with wood burning. This time with a design in mind! One of my favorite images which I originally created from a digital photo I took of myself. “Harlequin the Great Can’t Bear to Look”. The wood panel for this is about 12by12 inches. It will take some time to work all the blackened areas with the burner, but will be perfect for learning this technique. More updates to come!

I love the music of Daniel Johnston! His absolute desire to create music and art manifests itself in such purity. I can't help but feel happiness when I hear the song used for this walk. "Follow that Dream", matched the beauty and happiness of a sunny and warm January afternoon.

A top free time lapse of completing my painting. The main colors used here are buff white, pink, and gray. Colors I rarely use. I just wanted the challenge of trying my hand with something a bit different.

I patched my shirt. But the art of Sashiko is more than just mending. The intention is to actually appreciate the fabric with this style of stitching. It entails stitches placed in a geometric fashion with the use of a patch to make the fabric stronger.
Sashiko originated in Japan (as early as the 1600s). At first, it was used by the poor with materials that were readily available, out of necessity. It eventually became a way for an individual to be creative and skillful.&nb...

Basing this painting in acrylic on one of the gesture drawings I previously completed. I’m really interested in exploring and experimenting in color for this. So I used a shade of bright pink that I rarely use.

Experimenting with a pyrography set. I’ve never tried wood burning before. It came with little pieces of wood for practice. I must have watched a half dozen YouTube tutorials while I tried my hand at it. I heard often that it shouldn’t be too hot and to go slow. Thus the messages on my tiny signs. I think there is some real potential with this for future art and most definitely for customization of various things!

Here's a classic video from the time that I visited Camp Daniel Morgan, the filming location for Friday the 13th Part 6. I walked around the camp for about three hours exploring and filming. Trying to put together in my mind what had been filmed in any given spot. The YouTube video is more informative, but this one is more popular. Plus, it does give a sense of the place. How far it is from the main buildings to the lake.

This is a time lapse of a quick figure study painting in acrylic. For added challenge, I simply used several of colors that I selected at random. Including a bright aqua and a magenta that I've had for years complimented with a nice golden yellow.
The composition was inspired by a performative video piece where I'm holding and moving with a giant exercise ball.

Just the act of “creating content” requires a fair amount of thinking outside the box. Shown here, is my makeshift setup of a tabletop style studio set. Backdrop and lights in this case are for the star of the show. A jar filled with Magic Rocks as they grow.

Years ago, with my first digital camera in hand, I started taking photos. A whole new world opened up for me once I didn't have to worry about the expense of film, or worse, the expense of getting photos developed. I began to photograph everything. The sunset, the birds in the backyard, wildlife, kids at family events. Then one day it became glaringly obvious that I was missing in the digital record of every day life that I was meticulously documenting.
It was then that I began to...
