I don't have any new concept art this week because I had to travel and have been busy preparing for my upcoming Kickstarter launch. It's all still connected to the work on the RPG, so I wanted to give you a little preview of what I'm cooking up in the immediate future.
The example card above is a quick first pass at the design and layout for the boss cards. Please be patient with me as I work with my writer to finish them up.

I put a lot of my thoughts about monster design in my experimental YT video this week, so I don't want to reiterate too much. But let's take a look at each piece individually.
Knight of Matarialis - I wrote about this piece last week but forgot to include it I think...
Dragons - I have two different "dragons" this week. The one with all the curly horns on its head is more appealing than the super spikey one. I'm not too fond of th...

Hey guys,
I have more images to share for this week's content, but I spent all day on other Angelarium stuff today, so I'll have it for you tomorrow. In the meantime, enjoy this version of my ponderings in video form.
Let me know if you like this sort of thing!
Thanks,

I need to start sharing this work outside Patreon to start getting people interested in this project more broadly outside those lovely few who support me financially. I've been talking with friends about ways to attack this problem and there are a few options on the table. I'll likely explore all of them, but one of the first I'm going to attempt is these little intro pages with a mix of art and text.
I had a lovely chat with Simon, the creator of a project called Monsterguarden that ha...

After laying out the project in a spreadsheet last week, I realized I needed to focus the vision for the project a bit. Trying to design 13 cities was too much. It was too unfocused, but also too much work. So, with that in mind, I consolidated down to six capital cities that will be the focus of the main campaign.
I've attached another 5 pieces of character concept art this week as my exploration of the Angelarium TTRPG visual identity continues, but my writing for this update will foc...

I need to find a consistent pace for posting these rewards, since I'm now posting far more often than I was before.
You can find a collection of all the concept art I've made so far here on Dropbox. I plan to include PSDs of these as well. Let me know if that's something you'd like to take a look at. I'm also recording some video again with an eye toward TikTok and YT shorts. I would be happy to include uncut versions of those videos as well if you guys are interested in seeing more of ...

I ended up with a smaller than normal batch of concept art this week in large part due to splitting my time with work on a new line of enamel pins. Even though the pins are simpler and smaller than these character concepts, they take quite a bit longer to get right. Maybe I'm just bad at graphic design or linework, but I also believe making something clean and simple is really hard.
The theme for the pins is reliquaries. These are real world objects where bits of preserved human body pa...

I've got a big batch this week because I've got some minor edits of older pieces mixed in with the new stuff.
Sooner or later I'm going to have to make a map for this world. The base idea is that there are a bunch of cities built on top of dead Angels. A list of all the cities I need to design and their rough orientation to each other will push that process forward. Each city is named after the Angel whose body lies at its foundation:
Urialis - Uriel, Angel o...

This week's work feels a bit different stylistically from the stuff I've posted so far because I'm working with a display tablet for the first time in a long time. I bought a 24-inch Wacom Cintiq Pro and it's been a lot of fun to use now that it's all set up. The biggest difference between my old pen tablet and the display tablet is how much easier it is to draw. Primarily, this is affecting the initial drawings under the concepts, but more interestingly, it seems to be affecting how I edit t...

While I still haven't fleshed out this world completely, creating these concepts has clarified my vision for the project quite a bit. This clarity has tempted me to want to revisit some prior concepts. Let's take a look through them and see what's changed.
Eye Collector - This concept was never finished because I didn't feel it accomplished my vision for it. The newer version ditches the Bloodbourne hat for a more interesting inhuman head. My favorite part o...

My goal is to post a new batch every Friday, but this week I was late due to travel. Keep an eye out on Fridays for updates!
I've been pulling in a lot of different influences to see how they mix. Goth, high fashion, traditional Tibetan, anime. As I pull all these pieces together, a progressively clearer sense of what I want comes into focus.
Modern materials like spandex and mylar felt out of place in my head because I wanted this to be a fantasy setting. However, it's dawning o...

One of the ideas for the world of Angelarium that has existed in the background, but never saw daylight was the Nephilim. In the books, the idea of the Watchers taking human wives is brought up, but their offspring are never named or depicted directly. While working on those books, I always imagined the maligned demi-angels as a race of brutish giants.
Despite the Watchers being extremely diverse in their appearances, their children all share the same bizarre anatomy. The Watcher's ide...

I've been delayed a bit in posting these daily concepts due to some personal travel this last week or so but I am still making a good amount of work to share :)
One of the ideas I've been exploring are people that are knights and priests dedicated to specific existing Seraphim from Angelarium. There's a lingering question of how much these sorts of NPCs should resemble their patron Angels. I want to incorporate colors and design motifs from the existing Angels, but I don't want a desig...

The virtues are a lower order of Angel that began to emerge into the world after the establishment of the Angelic Churches. These beings seem to possess little will of their own, but instead exist to serve the remains of fallen Seraphim. The Virtues work collaboratively with the priestly orders to accomplish the goals of the Church so long as the priests continue to uphold their ideals.
To an outsider, these strange beings may seem to act as guard dogs for the Church, but to members ins...

Corpus
As physical remnants of an Angel's body grow increasingly distant to their relationship with a living entity the objectified remnants of the corpse are referred to broadly as "corpus". Culturally, corpus is often referred to by weight or volume because of the tendency to subdivide it into pieces that are no longer recognizable as complete body parts.
Living Watchers have the capacity to consume corpus to absorb the power into their bodies directly. To do so is a shocking ...

I've been teasing an Angelarium tabletop RPG for a while and it's time to start sharing my work with you.
The title is a work in progress. I had a name I liked but when I researched whether or not it was in use, it turned out to already be in use by something unsavory. So, until further notice, Project Mourning Star will do.
What is Project Mourning Star?
I am creating a spinoff from Angelarium set 900 years after the events of the books to create a game-friendly world of ...

I have been testing out methods for producing 56 minor arcana paintings in a way that's fast and efficient enough for me to cover the whole series in a reasonable timeframe and it's left me feeling rather cold.
One of the options I was considering was to create illustrations that were largely similar to the Rider Waite deck but with my own spin on things. This is doable. If this was the only path for me, I would make a schedule and start delivering finished versions of pieces like this ...

I have sketches for all 4 Ace now and I'm confident in them as a little series, but I'm losing confidence that this is something I have the heart to make 56 new pieces for right now. While these pieces represent my painting aesthetic quite clearly, they feel much more like commissions to me than past Angelarium work.
I'm mulling over my options for the Tarot at the moment but I think I'm going to have to reassess what's going on with it.

I'm continuing with my approach to the Ace of Swords and I'm not unhappy with the results. This isn't the sort of thing I'm likely to make prints of, but I'd still rather make hand painted illustrations for the minor arcana than resort to printing the deck just using pips.
These are fast enough that I feel comfortable doing at least one per week. We'll see how the rest of this rank goes before I make any kinds of promises about the pace of this whole series.

One of the key ideas I feel confident in for the Minor Arcana is to find a distinct set of visual elements and colors that correspond to each suit. While I'm not 100% on all of them yet, I do love the idea of doing the Swords in red.
After dumping the idea of the floating hand, the next change in my approach came in the form of emphasizing the background. I've been guilty of being overly indulgent in my backgrounds over the past few years and I want to start brining the focus back to th...

I've been trying to figure out what happens next now that I'm done with the Major Arcana. The logical choice is to begin working on the final 52 (!) tarot cards to finish up the deck. It's an intimidating idea so I've been rolling it around in my head a lot and experimenting with ideas on how to make it workable.
To kick off the exploration, I've been compiling reference and attempting a few of the Ace designs. Above are attempts at the Ace of wands and Ace of Swords.

Big glow up for Simikiel, Angel of Vengeance. This is one of my favorite paintings from the past couple of years, I hope you like it!
Thanks to everyone who has been supporting this series. The money here on Patreon has been the only money I've been making on the Tarot and there are still 55 more paintings to go before I can start selling decks.
1 more Major Arcana card to go and then I'll be digging in on the Minor Arcana!

I have a history associating Simikiel with greens, but I was inspired for this piece by images of aged copper. There's something about mixing shiny copper colors with a faded green patina that felt really exciting to me.
This piece, like the last version of Justice is also inspired by Brom, but this time I feel like I'm honoring his work much better. The contrast between the black leather along with the pale skin feels much more natural and striking this time around. The insight that h...

When I was discussing the idea of remaking a few of the Major Arcana cards with a friend she raised the Justice card as the #1 piece she wanted me to revisit. At first, I tried to retouch it but I'm glad I listened to her advice. This new version is quickly becoming one of my favorites from the series. This might even become the cover image on the box!
One of the things that was frustrating me with the older versions was trying to balance Simikiel holding both the scales and a sword. So...
