Working out the pose, composition and value structure is easy once I got the on track with the sketch. I knew from the start that I wanted to use some more graphic shapes and the smoke cloud around the face is a perfect excuse to use white/near white to make that happen.I've got to finish this and a tutorial for it before Gencon. Glad to finally be back on track!

The last 21 paintings I've made were either based on Eli Minaya's illustrations or remakes of my older pieces. So the idea of starting a new series with all original creations is intimidating. As a result, I've spent the past 2 days making sketch after sketch to try to break through my mental block. Despite spending a good chunk of the past 2 years teaching people exactly how to do this process via my mentorship program, I was having a really hard time taking my own advice.

Tutorials, Collectible Cards and Fallen Angels

With series 3 wrapped up I'm going to be implementing some changes. The biggest change is that I'll be re-configuring the tiers to work on a bi-weekly basis instead of a monthly basis.

As it stands, I've been delivering content about 3-4 times per month and then charging monthly. It makes more sense for me to just charge you guys whenever I actually produce new content. That's going to be every 2 weeks going forward. The content drops will be a bit further apart but they'll be larger.

I peeled back some of the color after I spent more time working on this. Leaning of the value contrast made it feel more serious somehow.

Most of the elements are locked down at this point, but I've been dodging some of the construction around the lower part of the figure. I'll have to do that next.

Looks like a final version is being posted Monday if things go smooth or Tuesday morning if I end up working through Monday.

Raziel - Series 1

Here's the original piece that I created back in 2005.

It was the last of the angels for series 1 and stuck around as a part of my portfolio for a long time. I saved Raziel for the end of series 3 because I wanted to end it on a high note again. Relying on a conventional depiction of angelic mystery and grandeur is not something that I plan to do very often for this project, so I want to make sure that it's being used in the most important places.

Okay, this is what I'm going with! The final version should look like a detailed version of this. It's going to be a pretty involved pieces to detail thanks to it having seven arms and 14 wings. Should be able to handle it this weekend. This is going to potentially be the most time consuming painting in the series so far. The last version had some serious polish issues that I'm not going to let happen again.I'm gonna make this into a playmat design once it's done.

I've decided to reintroduce elements from Matariel's series 1 design instead of simply redoing the version from series 2. I've also added in a lot more color by introducing much stronger yellows into the highlights and adding bright purples in as well to give it a more colorful daylit feel.

I'm really happy to have a version of this one that has a lower horizon line. I'm amazed it took me this long to start using that as a tool.
