I'm coming up for air after having spent a good chunk of this month working on a secret project.
Whenever I start to take Angelarium for granted, I get tempted to say 'yes' to side projects for other people. Every time I return to Angelarium, I'm reminded of how valuable my creative freedom is.
This is a return to an old sketch and I'm using it to return to an older approach to painting. I've been trying to return back to a style of working where I just relax and enjoy the process...

Our journey
See not the darkened slopes that present themselves today
There is Light upon the farther side

With the color added, the mood of this painting ends up being a lot more clear. It was probably possible to pull together the appearance of dusk in black and white, but I always get nervous about taking things too far in the value phase. When things get too tight too quickly, I start to feel restricted about making changes and adjustments that serve the work as I move closer to the final. Staying as loose as I can justify, for as long as I can keeps me making incremental improvements before I...

I'm still kind of in shock from finally delivering on the bulk of my Kickstarter. We had a grueling two week push to get all the packages in the mail. Two friends from up north came down to help, and without them I'm not sure if I would have been able to get back to work on art any time this month or next. We managed to ship over 2000 boxes of books!
Honestly, the experience has me humbled. So, I might as well put my feelings down on paper.

After a huge push, I've just wrapped up with the majority of the process to ship out my 5 year late Kickstarter. With the dust is settling, I'm realizing that I've got a significant overstock of the revised Book of Emanations.
I'm only offering these to Patreon and Kickstarter supporters for now with the official release only happening later this year when the next print run completes.
Enjoy!

Now that I've finally cleared out the vast majority of the stuff inside my little warehouse space, I'm able to start reintroducing stuff that's shipping from my new partners. Instead of stacking up inventory and shipping materials myself, I've arranged to have items shipped directly from my vendors and warehousing partners here in the US.
Gamermats has always been my source for stocking playmats, but now they are going to be shipping them directly to you. This has allowed me to offer a ...

The left hand of Ein Soph. The harsh Judge and curator of action.
As the forceful left hand, Gevurah must temper the dreams of existence with harsh protocol. Ever steadying the wings of migrant hearts to ensure the journey.

This is more of what I was hoping to get out of this piece. Mixing large amounts of grey with bolder hits of color matches my hopes for this painting much better than the more colorful direction it started off with. Going more colorful or more monochrome is never a given. Different paintings all seem to call out for different treatment.
Whenever I revisit an older concept, I always want to find a fresh dimension to it. In this case, taking the color in a totally new direction was far mo...

Looking at references for this piece, I saw a lot of this purple lightning. It matched with the original color palette of Gevurah, but as I started to try to pull this piece together I found that I wasn't feeling satisfied with the painting as a whole. Considering that these are all personal paintings, the idea of continuing on a painting I'm unhappy with seems like the wrong direction.
Whenever this happens I need to pull the color out and start working again on the underlying va...

I got started on this one late in the month because I've been busy working on shipping my very late artbooks. If you'd like one, I'll have them available for sale after the pre-orders are all shipped.
So, after a couple of sessions failing to produce a new sketch, I reached into the archives for an older version of Gevurah. It was a sketch I always liked, but I didn't have a clear picture for how I would finish it before. Being a few years older and more comfortable with my process, I d...

Hey guys,
I've been getting progressively more interested in NFTs since around 2017 and today it finally boiled up and crossed into new territory. Today, I made a snap purchase to buy an NFT from an artist I like. I didn't buy it as an investment or a statement, I just wanted to buy it because I liked it and it cost around $20.
Here it is: https://www.hicetnunc.xyz/objkt/64311

Da'at is the blessed container. Da'at is relief and flexible. The grateful bearer of Burdens.
"Ein Sof fills the world with so much Light, it opens the eyes of Creation and widens the mouth of Existence. The many faces of Da'at turn and turn in that Light, catching the overflow within the Crown of the Mind. Da'at holds the Sephirot as some words might carry many meanings.”

Early on in this painting I had to stop and take a second pass at the value phase. It's something I need to do when the colors aren't quite "sticking" to the canvas. This time around, I managed to do such a tight job on the values overall that the detail phase has been mostly finished in a single sitting. Having so much of the piece established early on means that these final step are almost automatic. This is a style of working that I keep committing to repeating. One day, I'll fulfill that ...

I wanted to continue with the trend of painting the Emanations in natural light. This time though, I wanted it to feel a little more dramatic. I love doing this trick where I shine a spotlight on the middle of the character. It's always moody and cool looking. To me, it makes them look like they are on a stage.
One of the key features that make this kind of lighting work is a strong color temperature difference between the central key light and the surrounding fill. Having a bit of a bl...

There's been a lot of excitement around these parts recently and I wanted to paint something that shared that same energy.
It wasn't until after I drew this that I realized that there are a lot of meteors showing up in my paintings. First it was the craters in the background of Keter's latest incarnation and now they are falling on top of Da'at. It makes me wonder if this is how I'm processing the big changes going on around me.
You can't control whether or not things fall f...

Some of you pay close attention to what's going on in my store, so I wanted to give you a little insight into what's been going on.
First off, I've decided to stop doing conventions. My last scheduled outing is Dragoncon in Atlanta later this year. I'm hoping that vaccinations have progressed enough by September to allow me to do it safely. As far as I know, it's planned to happen as usual. I've canceled all other appearances and I'm not planning on returning to the circuit.

This whole piece is packed with bits of stuff, so it's taking a while to scrub together the final touches. Ultimately, I'm going to end up pulling out some of the elements I planned in order to make the composition feel less crowded.
When it comes down to it, the goal is to differentiate the materials to feel distinct from one another. Some of that comes down to the sort of edge control I'm typically engaging with at this point in the painting and some of it requires me to nudge the way...

The old color palette for Keter was really weird but I wanted to keep the green for the new one too. For all the new Emanations, I've been trying to have a more high key approach to the lighting. Shining some daylight on them instead of having them exist in the murky void they lived in before. Something about making the Emanations more solid feels cool to me. Just trying to follow my gut here.

I'm running late on posting this month, but not really on the artwork itself. Things are weird right now.
I decided to keep working on another couple of Emanation paintings next. With the books finally getting printed, I've had these figures on my mind a lot recently. Revisiting them is a challenge because I have such a strong connection with the original pieces. Trying to make them in a different style requires an uncomfortable leap for me.
The new Emanations series has a theme...

The Master
Behind the scenes of any story, a mysterious figure looms in repose. The passions and temper of Kundaliel reveal themselves through the subtle ways in which they influence those around them. Our resonance to this Angel reveals itself in the moment of clarity that allows us to see the potential ripples our actions can have on the world around us. Through this insight, we gain access to a secret, hidden power.

Hidden behind the progress posts for this piece is a lot of trial and error, trying to find the right balance of values and colors. When I get to this state, I can create the illusion that I knew what this painting was going to look like from the beginning.
It's hard to share the real progress of the painting. Partially because it's emotionally difficult to share progress on a painting when you feel unsure of its direction but also because it's hard to know what will ultimately contribu...
