Once everyone had eaten, the conversation quickly turned to the buffs—particularly the bread rolls.
As Jen pointed out, it shouldn’t have worked. I’d done tests with Geo, and any time he helped me with cooking, I couldn’t infuse the food. So how was this dough any different?
“Milo, any ideas why this dough let me infuse it, but all my tests with Geo ended in failure?” I asked.
Milo looked to be deep in thought for a long while.
“Well, I have a couple of t...

I was torn between checking my new evolution upgrades and finding out what was going on.
Crisplet was back in the fire, but everyone else was still outside. It sounded like the battle was over, and now there were just two large fires burning out on the open ground.
It wouldn’t hurt to at least look at my new options, right?

Leaving town, Hari stopped by the guards to let them know we were heading out on patrol. It was then that I learnt another group should already be on their way back from patrolling the forest’s edge, and unless something had delayed them, we’d likely pass them within a few hours.
The guard also suggested we speak with them about what they’d seen or encountered so that we could all stay better informed and avoid getting caught off guard.
Which, thinking about it, made complet...

The next morning, everyone was in high spirits. I successfully carved a rune into two more melons and reached Level 2 in Carving Touch. But when I looked through Char’s notebook, I was immediately reminded of how truly out of my depth I was.
Even the most basic runes in that notebook looked incredibly complicated compared to the barrier I had done. Still, I would persist.
I also cooked up several more batches of cookies that night until Hari suggested we visit an alchemy shop be...

It had been over a month since he’d started this job. It was supposed to be simple—investigate rumours of a new rare class appearing in Dunhearth, report back to Lord Falcone, and be done.
And at first, everything went smoothly. After a couple of days at the inn to confirm it, the boy was summoned, and for nearly two weeks he heard nothing more. Honestly, he’d assumed the boy was already working in the kitchens. He was an orphan. Offer him a couple of silvers, and you'd have a loy...

Liane had left to find out what Simon was up to and to properly scout the area. It was apparently extra important to Hari, because once we left to do patrols, he needed to know how much protection Micca would require from the guild.
She had tried to protest, saying she’d be fine. Hari would have none of it, though.
That afternoon, I got to work practising rune carving on melons. Fortunately, due to their size, I could make multiple attempts on a single melon. After a couple of h...

Well, if I can’t use an essence on a batch like that, I guess the other options would be to make a large one and break it up… or maybe see if I can use it in a drink.
Micca was still slowly eating her cookie.
“You know, these would sell really well...” she said.
“They would. He’d probably need to tone down on some aspects though—like fire immunity on everything,” Liane added. “Speaking of which, did Crisplet hit level five?”
Wow, how had I forgotten...

It didn’t take long for us to make it back to the house with Micca. Once inside, Liane quickly informed the others of what had happened.
I was surprised by their reaction—Hari and Jen both went to grab their weapons. Did they really think there might be a follow-up?
Hari also took the paperwork from Liane and, after going over it in detail, nodded.
“Good job getting this paperwork. If they try and pin anything else on him now, it won’t stick,” Hari said with a chuc...

“It is you! Why are you here?” Micca called out, jumping down from her wagon and running forward.
“Uh, long story. What… why are you here?” I stammered, dismounting from Sable.
She wrapped me in a hug—at least until she noticed Crisplet and leapt back in shock.
“Oh yeah, this is Crisplet, my companion,” I said, gesturing to the brazier strapped at my side. “And this is the adventurer team I’m with. You’ve got Liane, Jen, Milo, and Hari,” I added, poin...

Once it was all over, I felt… relieved. Sure, I’d need to cook more drake, but the pressure wasn’t as crazy this time—I didn’t have a three-day deadline.
I was also relieved that Liane was okay. Both because she ate the drake, but also because the cat didn’t get upset or notice she’d stolen some of its food.
“Well, are you going to cook the same or change it up?” Liane asked, now sitting next to me.
“Honestly, probably change it up. I want to try some of ...

I leapt forward to try to stop her, but she was already gone. Even Crisplet shot some sparks. It didn’t take long for the others to notice something had happened and put things together.
“You’ve got to be kidding me. Liane, get back here in case something happens to you, you idiot,” Hari said angrily.
A voice came from one of the bedroll spots. “Ooooh, this is weird. It tingles,” Liane said.
We all turned to see her sitting down on a bedroll—then she was gone a...

Obviously, I couldn’t use Stock Reduction yet. These steaks were rare quality, and I could only reduce common.
But soon!
Once I’d cut off a thick steak, I laid it out on the stone table. It looked rather funny—like a ridiculously oversized Buvul steak.
I stared at it for a long while, wondering what I could possibly do with it. I could simply cook it and give it to the Cat, but the thought felt wrong. Just that small handful of scales had sold for more money than I cou...

Milo didn’t wait for the others to try the stew, but grabbed a bowl straight away instead. I was curious as well. I had tasted Buvul and mushroom stew many times when Geo made it, so I wondered if the flavour would be drastically different.
With my first bite, I took a little hesitantly. It was very similar—rich, hearty—but there was almost a spice to it now, even though I hadn’t added any spices. As I continued eating, the spice grew. It wasn’t uncomfortable, but it was very ...

We set up our camp that evening right on the border with the forest, so we finally got to collect firewood. Liane and Jen both went hunting in the forest as soon as we stopped. I knew what Liane would be looking for—so did Jen, which was why she chose to go as well.
I was about to wander off myself and use Foraging, but Hari put a hand on my shoulder.
“I know their running recklessly like that gives the impression the forest is safe, Trev, but it’s not. Please don’t wander...

As we turned off the path that would have cut through the mountain range, the trip immediately got slower. The ground was loose and rocky, and Sable was not used to this type of surface. Even though we weren’t on the mountains themselves, the slope was steep.
It wasn’t until we were a couple of hours into our journey that it dawned on me.
“We’re not going to get back to where that crystal was in the cave, will we?” I asked.
“It will be very unlikely. It may still...

It didn’t take long for the man’s boss to show up. He looked flustered as he came up the stairs, but after eyeing the group and seeing Jackson, he seemed to rapidly gather himself and then bowed.
“Hello, my name is Ralph. If you don’t mind, let’s move this in-store.” He opened the door of the loot house and entered.
We all followed. After coming into the store and seeing the talons, beak, and feather on the counter, he gave them a quick inspection and nodded. “Right,...

After that announcement from Kara, she promptly left the house, saying she had many other matters to attend to in the wake of the disaster that had occurred. It seemed like everyone was preparing to leave right away, but to me there was still a major issue.
“Uh, I know we need to leave as soon as possible, but we still need to prepare the meal for the Cat, and I’m not sure taking the corpse close to the forest to butcher it will be good for us?” I said hesitantly, as everyone turn...

We stopped, watching in both awe and horror, as a giant fissure split open along the mountainside, followed by the strongest tremor yet.
The streets erupted with panic and fear. Buildings cracked at their foundations, people screamed, and all eyes turned to the mountain as the fracture widened.
Then, with a deafening bang, we saw it.
An absolute behemoth—a massive, round-bodied dragon—burst free from the mountain. Boulders tumbled down in its wake, each one enormous even...

As we left the office and the doors shut behind us, I heard another loud crash. I suspected I now knew why Kara kept such a modest desk.
Heading down the stairs, my mind reeled with what had just happened—how casually the Lord had asked to have me killed while I sat right there, and then, essentially, being banished. Where would we go? Where could we go?
It was then that Liane spoke for the first time since we’d entered.
“Trev, don’t worry. If that pompous prick had ...

It was an awkward wait, especially once the captain of the guard arrived. Hari flat-out refused to speak to him until Jackson showed up, which took considerably longer.
“Can you at least tell us what caused the incident?” the guard captain asked, clearly frustrated by the delay.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. We’ll wait for the vice-captain of the guild. We were doing a job for him,” Hari said firmly, not giving an inch.
The guard captain threw his ha...

Lily hated the city. Impossible to get a proper sleep, and with that lizard on the hill, she rarely had a clear view of the moon. Why did humans choose to live like this?
There hadn’t been much to do once the child had entered the city. He’d taken his time before finally cooking something—but that fish.. the smell had been amazing, and the taste even better.
Maybe she’d been drawn to the child because of his food after all? That didn’t feel right—but it had worked out,...

As I write the story, I am considering adding a couple Interludes through the story to address other characters, such as Lily and Micca, and others during the story itself, or I can keep them all till the end of the Novel like I did in book one as an epilogue.
If i decide to do it, we'd realistically be looking at ~2 interludes, during the novel, these would be released as bonus chapters and not actual chapters as far as releases go as I would expect them to be 1000 - 2000 words instead...

We waited, letting the silence of the cave linger, listening for the slightest sound of movement. When none came, we advanced.
Milo dismantled the spikes that had blocked the creature from flanking us and conjured another orb of light, sending it drifting into the middle of the cavern. As we passed, I stored the corpse—there could be something valuable, and if we needed to retreat quickly, we wouldn’t have the luxury of picking it up.
I stayed in the middle of the group with C...

The next morning, when I woke up, I saw Milo and Jen sitting by the windows Milo had left in the side of the structure. Hari and Liane were still asleep.
I made my way to the fire, where Crisplet was resting. Did fire elementals even sleep?
Waving to the two who were awake, I knelt beside the fire and got to work. I didn’t have the ingredients for porridge, and I was starting to run low on boar belly. I could technically make pancakes, but I didn’t have enough butter or fruit ...

As I entered the structure, about to get back to eating my rabbit, it seemed my words had struck a chord—Milo burst through the entrance right after me.
“Did you say… Ancient?”
I just nodded. Milo collapsed onto the ground near his dinner.
“I really hope the dragon doesn’t know we have any connection to its kin’s killing. If it finds out we have the corpse, this trip up the mountain is going to be… interesting.” Milo shook his head, still in disbelief.

Hari didn’t put me down until we reached the bottom of the stairs. He had run so fast that what had taken us hours to climb only took minutes to descend. Crisplet had become an orb in my hand, and I honestly don’t know how I managed to keep a grip.
Another roar came from the mountain as a bolt of lightning struck closer to Mount Divinus itself, though still away from us. I collected myself as Hari grabbed me by the shoulders, looking me straight in the eye.
“We run. Follow m...

The next morning, like every morning so far, I did not want to get out of bed.
Part of me wondered if perhaps being an adventurer was the wrong choice. If I became a chef in the city, I’d have access to a bed every day, right?
I shook myself awake. Looking over, I saw Crisplet still in the iron basket sitting on the desk. It had worked out really well so far.
Hari had put a thick piece of leather between the basket and the desk, which seemed to absorb the heat and stop it ...
