Hello. Hope everyone's well and doing OK. I've made an extra Patreon-only video for you:
https://youtu.be/ik0EWjqVXI4
I can do more of this kind of thing if enough of you are interested. Let me know!
The main weekly vid will be up on Friday as usual.

Hello all. Hope everyone's doing well.
I though I'd look at one more Clash track this week. This one was originally a single from 1977. Great riff, 2 great guitar solos. Here's the link:
https://youtu.be/n_NSWMEL7TE
I've tabbed it all out below. There are a few extra bits included that I didn't get round to talking about in the video - the complete end solo, Jones' extra chorus part, and a little...

I'd not really planned this lesson, but I recently found myself learning a Beatles classic and thought I'd share my findings with you in this week's video.
A great guitar solo; some groovy rhythm parts; lots of fun to play. As I say in the video, I'm a big admirer of McCartney's guitar playing, which is always interesting and in its way quite radical.

Here's the backing. I went slight bonkers (must be the lockdown getting to me) and decided I wanted to do real drums on this one, which was massively time-consuming, but I'm pleased with the way it turned out. Somehow sampled drums on a Neil Young-style track didn't feel right. Anyway, enjoy soloing along to this. If anyone fancies sharing a video or recording of themselves, please do as I'd love to listen.

Hello all. Hope everyone's doing OK at the moment. I thought I'd try something new this week and kick off a potential new series of improvisation videos. I've made a backing track in the style of Neil Young's track On The Beach. I solo over it, and then discuss the chords and how you might go about creating your own improvisations. Here's the backing. It follows the arrangement of the studio recording which is 3 verses and choruses then an end section which repeats the main riff. There's a 2 bar count in. Enjoy playing along.

Hello all,
Hope everyone's been doing OK this week. I've been keeping myself busy putting together this detailed lesson on the Smiths classic.
Here's a link to the video:

And my tab can be found below. I've included some picking suggestions, and I've also added an alternative chorus part which is similar to what Johnny Marr plays live.
Hope you enjoy lear...

Here's the backing track to accompany this week's video. It's a mid-tempo Floyd-inspired thing, with some lovely mellotron strings. The chords are simple - 2 bars of A, then 2 bars of E. Use it to practice the lick, and variations of your own. Other things that would work would be the A major or major pentatonic scale throughout. Or you could try A major pentatonic on the A and E major pentatonic on the E. Have fun with it!

Hello all,
Hope everyone's doing OK. I'm trying to keep things as normal as possible in these very strange circumstances. So I'm just keeping busy, making these videos, teaching, and recording music. I'm very fortunate that most of my work these days can be done at home and online, so in that respect not much has changed. Just won't be playing gigs any time soon....
Onto this week's video, and the Nice Lick series is making a bit of a comeback. This one is is a vaguely David Gilmo...

Hello all,
Hope everyone's doing OK. I'm currently locked down in North London. But it's not as if I get out that much normally anyway. So I'm still just going into my studio, playing guitar and making videos. The main challenge is to stay focussed despite the constant interruptions from my 5 year old daughter, currently off school indefinitely...
This week I found myself in the mood for some raw and noisy rock n roll, so I decided to make a video on Link Wray's awesome track Raw-...

Here you go. This follows the arrangement of the original recording exactly. Enjoy playing along. Those of you who play bass might like to learn the bass line too, as it's amazing.
(Re-uploaded as the arrangement was a bit wonky on the first mp3.)

Good afternoon everybody. There are so many great Clash songs I could have chosen to look at, but I thought I'd do my first Clash lesson on the classic London Calling. This video is a detailed look at the many different guitar parts that make up the song. Here's the link:

Good afternoon Patrons! I'm taking a look at a delta blues classic today: the haunting Devil Got My Woman by Skip James. Here's the video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkrxbKVcziM
I'm attaching my tab below. As I say in the video, I'm trying to remain fairly faithful to the original whilst giving you a learnable version of the tune. So for the tab I've very slightly streamlined things to make it...

Morning all,
This week I'm looking at a bit of 50s rockabilly from Dale Hawkins, with guitar from the masterful James Burton. The main riff is a classic, and the 2 solos are pretty great too. Here's a link to the video:

Find the tab below. I've written out the all the little variations you can hear Burton play at the end of each verse which I don't go into in the video. (No back...

Here's the backing track for this week's lesson. It seems a bit of a futile exercise trying to reproduce the genius of the Meters rhythm section with sampled drums inside a computer, but there you go. I've done my best with this, and it's not turned out too bad. The arrangement is basically the first half of the original recording which I've then repeated. Have fun playing along.

Morning Patrons! Once again I find myself in a funky kinda mood. So I've made a video for you on the track Look-Ka Py Py by The Meters. I think the best thing you can do to improve you groove (other than working on my funk warm up lesson from a couple of weeks ago, of course) is to learn some properly funky tunes. And they don't come much more funky than this one. Here's the link:

So I got given a new guitar this week, which is always nice. And to put said new guitar through its paces I decided to look at another JD song. Great song, great riffs. For the most part this one is easy to play, though the arpeggio section is actually surprisingly intricate.

Morning all. We're getting funky today with a funk rhythm exercise. It's a simple, quick workout which is easy to incorporate into you practice routine. But it does really work wonders for you feel and groove.

Morning all!
Been feeing slightly under the weather this week, with an annoying cold and sore throat keeping me from filming new videos. Fortunately I had this one in my archives, that I made late last year. (Hence the background in the studio. I've not changed my mind and reverted to the red. Definitely prefer the grey. The grey stays!)
This is another track from one of my favourite records. (I could and probably will eventually look at all the songs on this album.) Essentially i...

Hello all,
Apologies for posting this a little bit later than usual today. This morning I had to go into central London to take both my Jazzmaster and Telecaster in for some repair work (problems with both guitars is why you haven't seen either of them recently in videos). They should be back up and running again soon though.
I've been meaning to do a Stone Roses video for a long time, and this week I've finally gotten round to it. There's lots to admire in the guitar style of Joh...

Here's the backing track. I've looped it a few times. (Check out my groovy Steely Dan style electric piano.) Once you've got the hang of the basic exercise, you might like to try coming up with some variations of your own - different rhythms, embellishments, starting on the highest string set and working to the lowest etc. Lots of possibilities. Have fun!

Hello patrons. In this week's video I'm taking about triads. We all know that triads are important and good for us, but it's not always the most exciting thing to work on.
