Bitwig Studio 6 is finally here, and after diving into the beta, I'm genuinely impressed by the updates.
The highlights for me are the new automation system, which now lets you treat automation with the same flexibility as audio and note clips, plus a slew of workflow enhancements like alias clips, improved editing tools, and a global key signature system that ties into various devices.
The interface feels snappier and more polished, the new dark mode is the default, and many sm...

Today I'm sharing a new Bitwig preset that's been on my hard drive for quite some time, inspired by the BND device from Colugo.
This preset uses pitch tracking to drive a sine oscillator, applying phase modulation to audio files for unique, pitch-tracked distortion effects.
It's a creative way to add new harmonics or textures t...

In this video, I talk about using the free and open-source Spectral Compressor plugin in Bitwig, especially for side chaining a bass with a combined drum loop.
Unlike traditional methods that need a separate kick track, this plugin allows precise audio ducking by analyzing the frequencies of the main drum loop, including the kick, snare, and hi-hats.
I show how using very fast attack and release times enables audio-rate compression, giving detailed control over how the bass reac...

In this video, I introduce a free plugin called Spectrum Thief that I recently discovered and found incredibly useful.
It allows you to clone the EQ curve of speaker cabinets or amplifiers, or even match the spectral shape of entire tracks, making it easy to consolidate multiple EQs into a single IR sample.
I've used it in my workflow for both creative sound design and practical CPU-saving solutions, and it has proven very versatile. If you're interested, you can find the downlo...

Yesterday, Bitwig did something unusual by announcing the Bitwig Studio 6 beta almost a month in advance, with the beta set to drop on August 27th.
This is a big shift from their usual surprise releases and suggests they’ve had a lot on their plate this year, including launching Bitwig Connect and the Rotor Control project.
I also touched on the sampler’s powerful time-stretching capabilities and shared some tips on creative sound manipulation inside Bitwig....

A patch that plays with the Ambient Drum & Bass genre, popular around 2000. Instant time travel back to your Childhood! It uses drum loops, drum FX, and plays random prepared samples at random points. Runs best at 85 BPM and, for some reason, is in F major.
You can try and replace some samples / multi samples. The musical samples should be in Cmaj. and the drumloops are just 2 bars at 85bpm of each drum loop. The bass plays some random notes at random places in Fmaj.

I guess that's just part 1: In this video, I walk you through how I take a grid patch in Bitwig (the recent one I posted) and turn it into the basis for a full track. I show you ways to separate different instrument parts using the DC offset trick, so you can process and arrange elements like drums, pads, and arps on their own tracks.
This method lets you bounce out individual parts easily and...

Alright, here's a new generative Bitwig Grid patch, totally free as always, and up for download on my Patreon. This time I tried mixing some ambient vibes with a few beats, and I think it turned out pretty well overall. Everything is done in the Grid (sounds, fx, reverb)
That said, I do feel like it could use a bit more variety. There’s definitely room to play around more with modulations that affect the arrangement. But yeah, overall I think it sounds solid.
Quick shoutout to ...

I sat down last night and whipped up this grid patch. This time, the notes and gate triggers are based on probabilities. There are two pad synths, a random noise generator for some unpredictable FX, and a sparsely firing pulse lead.
I also added a bunch of post fx like reverb and shimmer/audio pitch, all built from my own grids. As always, you can download the patch for free:

Today I explored NoteGrabber 2, a plugin that lets me manually convert audio to MIDI in any DAW using a visual sonogram.
I appreciate how it allows precise note editing and extraction, making it easy to analyze songs, isolate basslines, or experiment with complex sounds. The new version includes improved visuals, a quick grab option, zoom features, and real-time note preview. While it’s still a bit pricey, I find its workflow unique and useful when I need more control over audio-to-M...

The grid is realtively simple. I start by generating a major chord in the upper section: 0, -12, +4, +7. I take the root pitch and rotate it around the circle of fifths, going down 7 semitones each time. The other chord notes follow along. Every now and then, I switch to minor mode by randomly turning the +4 into a +3 and shifting the root pitch down by 3. The relative minor is always 3 semitones below the major.
I also use the chord notes to generate an arpeggio using a merge, and I r...

In this video, I walk through how I build grid patches from scratch, showing that while the setups might look complex, they're really just simple instruments and effects layered together.
I explain my process step by step, starting with a kick drum and gradually building up a groove with hats, claps, bass, and arps, all while tweaking parameters for a more interesting sound. I also touch on how I arrange everything on screen for my videos to make the patches appear compact, and share a...

I just checked out VISCO 2.0, which now turns this drum sampler into a full-fledged synthesizer with some really creative sound-morphing features. The update makes it easy to drag in any sample, blend it with another, and instantly play it on your keyboard without worrying about tuning.
I particularly enjoy the transformation tools and being able to create unique pads or drones from random sounds, all while keeping things simple and efficient. If you already own VISCO, the update is fr...

Made another patch over the weekend, just a few modules for kick, bass, sub, hats, arp, and a random melody with a lead sound. Everything’s soaked in reverb and delay, as always 🤣
And yep, you can download the patch for free if you want!
I played around with some knobs while recording and captured all the automation in the arranger. Haven’t done any generative grid stuff in a while, but it’s always a blast!
More patches coming soon!!!

Building these grids is really fun right now, maybe someone can make use of it. Just like the last patch, everything here is sequenced, modulated, and generated in the grid. In the video, I only have a few mastering tools on the master bus, everything else comes from the grid. As always, you can download the patch!

Last week, Reloop reached out to me about reviewing the Keypad Pro. Even though I am not a hardware review channel, I was curious because of its Bitwig integration. The Keypad Pro is an affordable controller, but it does not feel flimsy or fragile. It seems just right for use in a club, where gear can take a beating.
The keys are velocity sensitive and a bit small, which actually works well for tight spaces like my Linux desk. The controller is packed with features, including finger dr...

This is a small patch I made in Bitwig’s Grid with some house/techno/dub vibes. You can tweak a few parameters and perform with it live. I was too lazy to make an arrangement, so it’s probably best to hook up a controller and play around. All the sounds are generated and sequenced in the Grid, and there’s my auto-leveler on the output for compression and mastering. Hope you like it!

In this video, I explore a new idea I recently discovered using Bitwig that could be a real game-changer for mixing and mastering. I demonstrate how different analyzers can show different loudness readings based on their tilt settings, and how this affects our perception of sound.
Instead of relying solely on multiband compression to control different frequency ranges, I experiment with using pre-emphasis and de-emphasis EQs around a full-range limiter. This technique lets me manipulat...

In this video, I decided to create a complete drum and bass track in Bitwig Studio from scratch, without relying on sample packs. I started by setting up my project, choosing the tempo, and diving straight into designing the bass using Bitwig’s Phase-4 FM synthesizer, aiming for a sub that sits perfectly under the kick.
I built my own drum sounds from the ground up, tuning the kick and snare to fit with the bass, and constructed hi-hats and percussion for a lively rhythm section.

I recently tried out Melda's Multi-Analyzer after searching for a plugin that could show the frequency content of multiple tracks in one window. I was pleasantly surprised by how well it integrates with Bitwig Studio and how easy it is to use. Even though I usually find Melda's interfaces a bit clunky, this one feels straightforward and functional. With just a few clicks, I could analyze the frequencies of my melodies, leads, pads, and bass in one unified view. It's simple to set up colors an...

I just checked out Reev-R, a free and open source convolution reverb plugin from the same developer who made Gate 12, Time 12, and Filter. You can grab it for Linux, Mac, and Windows, or even build it yourself from the source code on GitHub. Reev-R lets you shape the envelope, adjust the mix, and control how much signal goes into the reverb, which is really handy for creative sound design. There’s a default impulse response included, but you can load your own library for more variety. I rea...

I checked out Resonarium, a free and open-source physical modeling synth in a very early alpha state (v0.0.1). It's based on waveguide synthesis and resonators, capable of some wild and unpredictable sounds—so caution is key when using it. It’s flexible, modular, and surprisingly powerful despite its bugs and high CPU usage. It works with different excitation sources (impulse, noise, sequence, sample, external input), and its structure is clear if you understand waveguide synthes...
