New Sketch of a Shepherds Home

Hi everyone!
Doing personal work again between (or rather while) doing commissions. I'd like to keep this one simple, and will try to do the lineart rather quirky and playful instead of being precise and going for lines that just don't really happen organically in nature. It has been a long time (probably more than a year) since I've last drawn sheep from close up like this, but they will probably be fun to draw as you don't really have to know so much anatomy due to their thick coats ^^ <...

New Artwork - Merchant Guild Ship "Penumbra"

Hi everyone - found a name for the ship, it is called "Penumbra".
It travels the seas of grass as a merchant ship, where there are only the remains of old civilizations left. Its sail shows the banner of the Merchants guild of the nearby islands, and it mostly trades Ember from the chalk cliffs towards the centre of the island, where the mountain region has lots of use for the glasslike stone.

I'm really proud of the sail, and it sets itself off nicely against the rather dark sky. T...

New Lineart

Hi everyone!
Just checking in to let you know that I'm still around :D

Currently there is a lot to do with commissions, but today on Sunday I took out some time to only  draw my personal art.

The goal is to make the scene a sunset, and the sail should be the main point of attraction. The sail will have a banner of gold, so I'll paint it glowing in the sunlight. No idea where this fascination is coming from, but I've always loved ships that are mystical or magic in their na...

New Sketch of a Sea of grass

Hi everyone!
This one will be a ship that sailing on a sea of long grass - as usual, the thing that still bugs me is the question of the weather and lighting. It will either be daylight and blue sky, or go in the direction of golden hour where the sun is just setting behind us. This would have the benefit of being able to highlight a white sail in golden light, yet the grass would most likely be mostly in shadow except for the higher parts in the front and the clouds could be too distracti...

New Artwork - Wizard's Travels: Alabaster Citadel

Hi everyone! This one took longer than usual, I hope it was worth the wait though. I'd like to reach the effect that one gets intrigued and drawn towards the city. The thought of making the whole scene in a plain blue sky never really left me, but it makes sense to paint in different colors than usual. Every once in a while, one has to try out something different to explore the tastes and get to know the likes and dislikes.

Visiting a city that sits like a jewel on the borders of a city...

New Lineart

Hi everyone!
This one should feel vast and spacious, almost a bit like we're lost in the sea of sand. The rocks will most likely be rather dark and blueish, but I have yet to think about the sky. Maybe so it doesn't feel so out there, the wizard will be connected to the city in the distance, for example through a light blinking out of one of the many towers. That would mean that the sky would be rather dark though, like a morning or evening sky. We'll see. This weekend I'll be rather busy...

New Sketch

Hi everyone!

The last few pieces grew a desire in me tp return to something clean and simple, which this one will be. Not only the lineart, but the composition as well - I want the piece to be able to "breathe".
It will give the opportunity to train rather muted colors, as such arid place don't have the same lush colors as a jungle, yet still absolutely beautiful colors in their stones and shades.

It might also turn out to be a scene in dusk or without clear clouds, but a rat...

Wizard's Travels: Limestone Shire

Hi everyone!

After getting back to my dayjob after the vacation, the art side moves more slowly. Yet the travels of our small wizard continue!

This piece made me overthink my lineart again, but maybe it isn't even a bad thing if I don't have a fixed pen that just always gets used to draw no matter the subject. In a way, it adds a bit of roughness to the piece when done like this, yet the cleaner lines from other pieces give a more clean impression over all. When I think of Moebi...

New Piece with partial lineart and sketch

Hi everyone!
This new settlement carved out of stone is something that I didn't have the courage to try out for some time. Drawing rocks is rather hard - like trees or plants, there are so many different ones, yet they still can look "wrong" pretty fast.

Now that I see the piece without actually working on it while doing this post (funny how that gives a different perspective), there will probably need to be some other large rock formations next to the village, as I'd like all of thi...

New Artwork "Wizard's Travels: Hillside Home"

Hi everyone!
The wizard is on his journey again through the hills, probably drawn by the smell of fresh bread as travelling can be rough. He usually gets all sorts of provisions from people, as he is skilled with mending things that were broken through his magic.

The new brush works pretty great, if it feels well on the next piece, I'll update my brushpack again for everyone who has already bought it.

The more I paint grass, the more I love throwing in more and more colors and ...

New Sketch - the Wizard returns

Hi everyone!

The Wizard returns! Wanted to show you the not finished lineart already since I like that house so much. As you can see, the original sketch (sorry that it is so blurry, it was really small when I made it) has an angle that is showing us the scene from a way wider angle. Before going to bed late at night it suddenly struck me to move things closer to us as the viewer, which I then did, yet only with the foreground. It seems to work much better this way, and is hopefully mo...

New Artwork "Stargazer"

Hi everyone!

Kind of a change from the usual subjects, but I hope you still like it. Watching the stars has been a fascination of mine, oftentimes when going out with our dog I just stop in my tracks and gaze at the stars, imagining the distance and feeling so tiny that everything feels so unimportant. For some people it might be a frightening feeling to realize that we're all on a rock in a space that is so vast that trying to imagine it doesn't even come close to its size. To me, it ...

New Sketch "Stargazer"

Hi everyone!
This piece is absolutely misleading as a sketch - I'd like to make the whole thing in moonlight (not too bright) and a huge nightsky, which is something that I've been itching to do for a time now.

The design of the tower was a real pain, it took me about 8-10 tries until it felt right for what I had in mind. The water will be a challenge, as it will probably be hard to strike a balance between the water surface being rather bright or dark.

We'll see though. I have...

New Artwork "Home in the Mountains"

Hi everyone! These chalk cliffs are usually home to families and have been in their possession for ages, continually being worked on while carving more rooms into the rocks.

As you can see, the piece undertook quite some changes with its colors regarding the rocks itself, which was the center of my focus for a long time. After almost scrapping the whole piece and calling it off the balance of having a chalk rock somehow suddenly worked, or at least worked as well as it could in that mom...

Lineart for "Home in the Mountains"

Hey everyone!

At first I wanted to wait until this piece is completely finalized, but this might take some more days to color it, which is why you see the lineart already. To be completely honest, I am not too convinced of its composition so far, but not every piece can be something that just "clicks". Yet the idea itself is something cool in my opinion, and imagining growing up there is a cool change from every day life. Anyways, coloring this one should not take more than a few ...

New Sketch "Mountain Home" (?)

Hi everyone! A new piece with its composition being all over the place, but I liked the concept so much that I went with it. This will be a large chalk stone into which there has been carved a place to be called home. Red in the sketch is a cat as well as a flying kite, which should have a nice color contrast to the sky, for example being red tones against a blue sky.

As you can see the door and bridge can be closed off and defended, but there has only once been the need to do that. The...

New Artwork "Starbloom Trees"

These trees blossom once every 7 years. Their fruits carry a great healing power within them, which is why they have been protected since the moons were much younger.

Hi everyone! Another piece for the books, as I feel like the stone pillars really took it out of me to find solutions for their texture and improve my drawing skills.
This also gave me the chance to tinker around with the lineart brushes a lot more, which lead to having a "main line brush" that just feels right...

New Lineart

Hi everyone! It has been a really busy week, which is why this took rather long, but that is not the only reason as you can see. As I really want to level up drawing rock textures, this piece came to life. There is definitely no shortage of training ground with this piece. Two things are still problems to be solved - the weather/lighting as well as the stone between the tree's branches. But I'll figure both of them out, step by step. Coloring this will be interesting, especially for the stone...

New Sketch

Hi everyone!

I'd like to become a bit more daring with the concepts and perspectives, as this is what fascinates me with art from other artists. For this, these stone pillars as natural rock formation are well fit, and yet there will still be enough trees and grass and everything good that is green^^

Rocks are especially hard to draw, and if one doesn't go outside of the comfort zone, they will always look the same. This might also be interesting compositionally, as there a...

New Artwork "Sea Stone Bay"

"It is said that this Sea Stone emerged from the water in this bay when the Empress' son was born. In order to ensure his long and content life, the Empress had a temple built to house the stone. It has served as a beacon for sailors for years, and it continues to shine brightly as long as the prince's heart remains unclouded."

Hi everyone! As you can see, the biggest change in the process of drawing this one were the clouds. Having these huge clouds adds a lot of weight to the...

New Sketch

Hi everybody! Currently in Northern Italy and taken by a commission, there was not too much time for a new personal piece. This will be the new one piece, yet the nature of the temple might be changed later down the line. I'd like to give this one an eerie feeling, maybe having the foreground in shadows as if it was covered by a large cliff or something similar. We'll see.

In the second piece, you can see that I've experimented with a new brush again, and see how the sketches were made....

Getting Home

As the first droplets of rain began to fall, the wizard hastened his steps homeward. The lantern on his stave cast a warm glow, illuminating the path ahead. In his mind, he envisioned the shelves of his cozy home, lined with old books and some curious artifacts that he picked up on his travels. With each step, his anticipation for the hearth's warm embrace grew stronger, the allure of knowledge and the comfort of home urging him forward. While hurrying to his home at the lake, he apprecia...

Wallpapers for you

Hi everyone! It has been some time since the last wallpapers, so I thought I'd bring you some again. The PNGs are attached, as always, if you need another format, let me know! In other news, I found a someone (don't know if he wants to be mentioned or not) who can code an app for the wallpapers. You will be able to set all wallpapers in there as yours with one click, and the coolest feature is that you can set it to change your wallpaper randomly ever so often. I hope you like that idea, I'm ...

New Sketch "Summer Storm"

Hi everyone! This one will have a bit of a moodier setting - I love Summer Storms, or rather the feeling before they come in. The wizard will have small lantern that will light his way, which will hopefully nicely light up the leafs and grass in front of him.

This idea came to mind when I got sent photos from a lake in England, which you can see attached. It is really rare that I base an illustration off of an actual photo though, this might even be the first time or definitely one of t...

Wizard's Travels: Silverleaf Village

Hi everyone! Another piece finished, another town to visit. I hope you can see what you like in the process images - the way I do grass has changed forever when I finally figured out what colors you can put into grass to make it more lively.

Having thicker lines makes me dare more things like the tree on the right that is rather up close - earlier this year, something like this would have scared me as I would not have been sure how to balance abstraction with detail.

Anyways, on t...

Wizard's Travels, New Sketch

Hi everyone! We are continuing the travels of the small wizard to another town between the hills. Sometimes I ask myself why these old villages were not always built on hills, but if there is no particular need to defend yourself, it is probably best to build the village where the rivers and creeks are.

Anyways, I still can't decide yet which lighting and weather the artwork should receive - there could also potentially be some clouds. But the lineart is the most time-consuming thing an...

Wizard's Travels: Call of the Sea

Hi everyone!
This idea originally came to me when doodling around, and as I am currently almost finished with the third book of Lord of the Rings, I remembered Legolas "feeling the call of the sea", which gave me the base idea for this piece.

At first I feared that the blue hat will not give enough color contrast to the blue sea. but it seems to work out fine with the red of his coat. Such a temperature contrast draws a lot of attention, and as there are usually a lot of details in m...

So uhm... - I lost myself in details again. Everytime when sitting down I swear to myself to not overdo it with details in the inking phase, as it takes soo long and frankly is just not the best idea if you'd like to put out more pieces and realize more ideas, but I somehow can't help it.

It might be worth a thought to start in the foreground and then move backwards with less detail, so outmaneuvering my tendency just with "where I start". I seem to always start in the middleground, and...

New Sketch

Hi everyone! Here is the sketch for the next piece of the travels of the wizard - one of the many coast of the islands.

Compositionally, as most times I watched out to have the main point of interest in light and within the range of the "two thirds". For those of you who don't know this one, it is basically a compositional "rule" to divide your canvas in thirds, and in the area of one of the 4 intersection there should be found your main point of interest, the most important thing...

New Artwork "Wizard's Travels"

Hi everyone! It's been some time since the last painting  as I had a lot of work to do at Akris (the company that I work for in my dayjob). So I'm particularly glad to continue with our Wizard's Travels around the Islands of Argenta.

The grass in the foreground was a lot of fun, and taught the important lesson that some white blades of grass somehow improve the look and feel to it a lot. Not gonna lie, it needs a bit of courage to punch some other colors than green and blue in ther...
