I had this chat with George over zoom, but it was a great one nonetheless. We took two swings at this conversation, because George's ideas evolved in between the time we recorded and the time I put it out, and I hope you enjoy listening to the chat as much as I enjoyed having it with him.

Heyo Lovely Patreonites!
I’ll be doing a live The Last Post show on 20 December to celebrate having (almost) finished a whole year of absolutely bloody ridiculous alternate universe satire.
Guests will include Josh Gondelman, Alison Spittle, The Glitch in the Space Time continuum and as much wildly ambitious garbage as I can get Chris and Ped to let me do.
Tickets are here:

Hallo Lovely Patreonites!
The next tea salon for Afternoon Tea Subscribers and up will be in Australian East coast 8pm on the 8th December.
Which I think is
- 9am U.K. time (GMT),
- 2am on the west coast of the US (PST);
- and some other awful time on the east coast (EST).
Don’t worry if it doesn’t work for you, the week after will be 8pm BST and the one after that will be 8pm PST. I’ll keep the timezones moving so everyone can find a dec...

Hallo Lovely Patreonites
What a weekend! It’s been so many things, I almost don’t know where to start.
Let’s do; Tea Salon Update, Talk About Friday’s show and then Mum’s birthday.
Tea Salons Update
So, we’ve done 3 salons so far, and are figuring out what works. So far, I’ve spent a fair bit of time introducing you wonderful people to one another, because I’m so pleased with all of you, but I think in futu...

I used to have an English professor who said “all language is quotation”. Which I loved.
He was a great professor. He’d come in with his lecture all written on scraps of paper and napkins, and speak in incredibly elegant and well constructed periods. I’d take notes at a mile a minute, and try to remember his neat dense turns of phrase to enjoy privately later.
If you think about how you learned the meaning of any word, particularly early on, you tend to have le...

Hallo lovely people - last week we tried a new thing for the first time; for afternoon tea level and up, a small group salon. It was very lovely, and I enjoyed it immensely. We’re rotating timezones each Tuesday, but you can come to any or all of them each month if you’re subscribed to afternoon tea or above.
This Tuesday 24 Nov, the Salon will be 8pm U.K. time, which is to say 12pm (PST) and 3pm (East Coast US time).
For Australians, it’ll be 7am Aus time (25 Nov).

Hugh Mackay is a family friend, he's also the founder of the Australian quarterly research series The Mackay Report 1979-2003, which later became The Ipsos Mackay Report. He is a psychologist, social researcher and writer. He was a weekly newspaper columnist for 25 years and is generally a social commentator and extremely thoughtful guy. I really enjoyed having the opporunity to chat with him, as he releases a pair of books together, both about love.
We had a fascinating and wide rangin...

Hallo you lovely Patreonites, you mini-Medicis, you community of top notch folks with great taste in whatever this thing is.
As I mentioned a little while back, I’ve been planning to update the tiers for a little while, and then I procrastinated out of fear that everyone would storm off in disgust. But I’ve done it now! There are no wildly substantive changes apart from to the one-on-one calls, which were becoming unsustainable time wise.
So, instead, if you’re on one of t...

Hallo!
I’m thinking about the future, assuming there is one - I’ve spent most of this year feeling like it’s impossible to plan more than three months ahead, but that now includes the beginning of next year.
If you’re a The Last Post listener, you’ll know that project is framed as “366 days of this year”, and that final show is now in sight. I couldn’t really imagine getting through a whole year of 7 days a week when I started this project, sick as a dog in Decembe...

SpaceAcre are a British Alt-Electro-Pop duo made up of Phoebe Little (lead vocals, guitar, keys) and Jas Scott (vocals, bass, synths, cello). Phoebe used to do music with my twin, and when he told me they were trapped in a bunker making post-apocalyptic music, I thought I'd love to talk to them about the process!

ETA: okay! I’ve made the call. I’m going to NOT have a 2 drinks minimum and will pay the extra 25% on venue hire.
It’s worth it to get back in the flow of live performance, and I we can make it so nobody loses money, as long as people come.
I’ll explore livestream options, though there is some reluctance on their part; the premise being, if people can watch from home, why would they come to our venue? (A premise with which I don’t particularly agree)
We’ll see h...

I knew him all my life, but he will be honoured with a plaque that I will format in another application because fine it’s a subscription service now, but when it won’t recognise its master or accept the coin I repeatedly tried to press into its open hands we must admit it has betrayed us and cast it in...

Today was a fascinating exercise in admin. It made me think of that, “for want of a nail, the shoe was lost/ for want of a shoe, the horse was lost...” poem and also the lady who swallowed a spider. I’ll try to describe the most boring thing in the least boring way.

And yes, it is immensely embarrassing! This is the LEAST EMBARRASSING PAGE!
Look at that mix of self awareness, self consciousness and smugly precocious pretentiousness! Look at the use of early internet-paralinguistic-cue-speak (smiles wryly)!

Why did I sign my name!?!!

I found this little diary from when I was little. It says “DIARY” and “PRIVATE” and “Keep out Henry that includes you”.
It has a little lock on it, and I’m not sure if I have the key any more. I’m wondering if I should break the lock, find someone who can pick the lock or leave the secrets of little me to the tides of history.
I’ve found so much old stuff, unpacking boxes at my dad’s house. My goodness I’ve written so many letters that I never sent. Love let...

Hallo!
This week's TWA is a reverse one - perhaps an Alice With Tea; this is the unedited conversation I had with David whn he was making his radio show about a jewish comedian ancestor. He asked a lot of interesting questions and I rambled incoherently about context, offense, judaism, caricature and more. He used a few quotes for his excellent radio show, but I thought there were enough interesting things in the whole chat to be worth putting it up here.

Unpacking my dad into his new house, I came across photos of myself at 16/17, encouraged to go to my school formal by my grandmother, who like the glamorous and extravagant lady that she was, took upon herself the mantle of fairy godmother, bought me a fancy dress that made me feel lumpen and extremely unglamorous and talked me into this thing that I really didn't want to do. She said I'd miss not going. So we did the whole thing. I dressed up in this extra fancy dress, asked one of my brothe...

I think I’d forgotten what it was like to have a social life where you come and someone cooks dinner while you all stand around in the kitchen offering to chop something and then you sit with a group of interesting people around a table while you all talk about everything for hours.
