Nightmares and Mirror Mazes

Standup comedy into a camera at home is like having a surreal dream about doing standup comedy to an empty room. I thought it was the worst until last night when I saw the future.

The future is in hybrid gigs - at least until we can figure out as a species how to 20 second test for covid or vaccinate against it. And I’m fine with that idea - a socially distanced room, and some sort of cheaper live-stream-at-home option.

It’ll be super interesting to figure out the...

New Tea With Alice: Tegan Higginbotham

Tegan Higginbotham is a lovely human, (with what people tell me is basically the same voice as mine). We had a lovely long distance tea where we talked about the chilling effect of sensitivity, the beauty of romance novels and feminism in sex scenes.

Saturday Night Thoughts: My Two Cents For Free

(Picture of Alice Fraser Merch by Sam Streeter)

Here’s a thing I’ve been thinking about, and it’s tricky to articulate, but I’ll give it a shot if you’ll give me the benefit of the doubt. If you’ve been listening to Tea With Alice or watching recent instagrams-live (what’s the plural?), you’ll have heard some of these thoughts creeping in at the edges. I’ll try to lay them out sensically

It’s tricky because the thinking touches on the curren...

New Tea With Alice: Sami Shah

I had a chat with my friend and Trollplay cohost, Sami Shah, who is a fantasy novel author, comedian, journalist, broadcaster and inveterate responder-to-trolls.

We talked about the problems that arise when you get the dream job, what he wants to say now, and what it's like to get hate mail from white supremacists AND the Taliban.

Is going to be live on Instagram with me in 20 minutes. Join us there to talk (probably) about the ins and outs and the complicated sides of harassment in our industry. I’ll be putting it up here later for $5 and above video level Patreonites.

Of course as ever if you can’t afford that level but still want to watch the video but also don’t want to go to Instagram, message me and I’ll send you a link or something.

This chat with Craig Quartermaine.

Normally I try to keep these video chats to about half an hour, but this one went fractal, and spun out to about 50 minutes. I’ll be doing a Tea With Alice to talk through some of the branches we missed. You can watch it even if you don’t have an instagram account.

I got this a few days ago:

New Tea With Alice: Mike Schmidt

A talk with Mike Schmidt about America. This was an interesting chat, though I feel like I was maybe not as coherent as I'd like to be.  We talked about news, standup, riots, racism and failure. Look up mike's work Here.

An update on sales tax

Hallo lovely Patreonites

I wanted to give you an update on some changes coming up which may affect some of your pledges. Due to new laws passing in several countries and US states, Patreon will start charging some of you sales tax on some pledges on July 1st, depending on what reward you’re getting, and what part of the world you’re in.

If you’re in a location where sales tax will be required, you should expect to receive an email from Patreon with more information about ...

A rhetoric thing...

‪I’m seeing more and more people using the same words and phrases as other people of their ‘tribe’ (in many areas/ affiliations /sides) online and in the news.

This is disturbing for me to see in the doxa (shared public consciousness / discourse). I feel like a kind of message is communicated when a majority of the opinions voiced in public echo one another so closely.

What I mean is that an accumulation of sameness in public speech begins to exert a pressure towards mor...

New Poem, and director’s commentary.

I walked to bondi from the city today.

I used to walk to work in the city from bondi when I was working at a law firm. I’d wake up at four thirty and walk in as the sun rose to get that window of freedom and quiet before I went to not-fit-in at a place. I’d listen to Dolly Parton’s 9-5 on loop and be like yeah, they DO let you dream just to watch them shatter, I AM just a rung on the boss man’s ladder!

Walking back to bondi via Liverpool st towards oxford street, you go p...

Writing Satire During A Revolution

Hallo lovely Patreonites. It looks like there’s a revolution in America, and from over here in Australia it’s hard to feel like there’s any way to comment or not-comment that is right, useful, helpful, productive.

So what I say now will inevitably be wrong, incomplete, and specific to my interest in rhetoric and comedy.

You might want to follow any number of people more informed than I am. Here’s a start: Baratunde Thurston who is brilliant on the bugle and can be found ...

Inside and Alive for Instagram

Here's a little video for those of you lovely Patreonites who want to watch my nightly instagram lives (instagrams live?). This one from last night is with Laura Davis which we do every tuesday night because we're missing our Talk Show, Inside and Alive

When we do it live, it's usually a structured show with segments and bits of standup and some joke workshopping. For instagram, it's mainly just a chat. Laura is my favourite and always makes me laugh. I hope you enjoy.

Tea With Alice: Corey Tutt

Corey Tutt is a scientist and a Kamilaroi man who is obsessed with science education, and getting things done.
I spoke to him about the things he wrestles with in expanding science education to remote communities, and wrestle with our ideas of what constitutes Australian history, education, life skills and who "owns" the scientific method.

If you get a chance to check out Corey's project - DeadlyScience, it's a very cool initiative that provides science books and early reading ...

When the past comes back to haunt you

I’m up! I woke up 45 minutes before my 4.30am alarm, which I have to say is probably the worst period of before-alarm-awaking, because you really can’t justify going back to sleep.

I’m about to do an hour of comedy at the “Nowhere Comedy Club”, and I still have very little idea what I should do it how it will work, but sound check is in fifteen minutes and then it’ll be the show, so there’s no point worrying about it now.

On the funny side, I woke up to this note - ...

I’ll be doing a live comedy show over the internet either tonight or early tomorrow morning depending on where and when you’re reading this (or in the past, I guess!) tickets are available via the link above.

I have no idea how it will be to do an hour of “proper” comedy (rather than just chatting) over the Internet... particularly not at 6am Aus Time, but we’ll find out!
