What’s the word for the feeling when you support worker’s rights and collective action, but also there’s a train strike on all this week and you have to get to a show in Leicester?
What’s the word for when you deliberately booked few shows and previews so you could find the balance with travel and motherhood, conscious that Edinburgh Fringe is likely to be very hard, and not wanting to overdo it, and then feeling fretfully like you’re not making the best of your ha...

I know this was caused by a pest but it looks like beautiful lace.
I’ve been living on a boat in regent’s canal for the past week, and other than a rough start with arriving to find the septic tank full (as horrifying and stressful a process to solve as you could possibly imagine), it’s been very cool and weird and interesting. Laser Fraser can’t go up stairs yet, so it’s very safe and fun for her to caterpillar around in the cabin, which is lovely.
The peop...

I’m loving reading the submissions to the D’Ancey LaGuarde literary tribute competition. The initial ridiculous idea grew out of an emailed bit of LaGuarde fanfic spontaneously sent to me by an excellent Patreon who I will leave unnamed unless they want to volunteer themselves in the comments section below. I can’t quite believe that a joke I did and then the whim to have a competition for writing fiction based on a fictional fiction writer has lead to this incredible floweri...

Hallo from the Zaltzman house in London. We are arrived and safe in one piece and boy are my arms tired. 24 hours of travel is a lot of travel and I am a shrivelled raisin curled up like a prawn. I feel like I need a massage, but I’ve only had one Post-pandemic, and it was a half hour massage that I got in Perth on an impulsive whim - I was walking past and thinking, I’ve needed a massage for literally years - and it was such a thrill to lie down on the table-with-a-hole-in and then the m...

See you in 2.5 hours!
So, my run of Australian tour shows of CHRONOS are done. It was doable but I’m very tired now. I didn’t want to be dramatic so I didn’t do a big social media agony about it, but I’ve been really thinking about whether it’s worthwhile touring live shows with the baby, or whether I should just settle back into a hermit/podcasting groove, somewhere cheap to live for a few years off the main drag.
Melbourne was really a slog (no shade to the lovely people who did show...

It’s Mother’s Day here in Australia. My first one as one, and it’s weird because I’ve spent the last years flinching away from it.
I’m not sure how I’m going to feel about Mother’s Day in the future, and I don’t know if I get to decide, but I think how I feel is maybe at least a little bit under my control - particularly about arbitrary dates like this.
For example, I’ve already changed my mind about Hallmark holidays (Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day...

Hallo, a few of you lovely Patreonites asked for the transcript of the other night’s debate (given that it wasn’t recorded. I have stuck it below, in all its stream-of-consciousness-airport-disaster-glory)
Also, salon tomorrow is moved to an hour later! Which makes it 7am Wednesday for US East Coast types, 9pm Wednesday for me, and midday Wednesday U.K. time. The same link will work. I’ll send through the reminder and passcode to relevant levels tomorrow. Sorry for the ...

I flew back to Sydney from Melbourne a few days ago, and boy are my arms tired. Because of carrying Laser all around the airport for five hours. It was an absolute travel nightmare - good practice for the long haul to England next month I guess? To look at the sliver of silver lining.
My flight was delayed then cancelled, then the new flight also delayed, then they lost our bags. Laser Fraser was extremely good - mildly fretful at the airport stress-buzz but willing to be en...

Hallo, this is the launch of The Gargle’s D’Ancey LaGuarde Tribute Literary Competition. I could have done a website page, but could I?
RULES:
You will write one chapter of a LaGuarde novel that hasn’t yet made it into this dimension. It must be a chapter of one of the books advertised on The Last Post or The Gargle as detailed here:

So here’s a thing I think. (Originally a thread on my Twitter, but I know you don’t all follow me there, and that is correct)
As a society, we carve out ‘outside’ or ‘safe’ spaces for old people, disabled people and babies (parents with babies). That distorts normal society in truly awful ways.
One of the ways in which it does that is relevant to covi...

Hallo all! It’s been a hefty week, fighting off Schroedinger’s covid (feeling like crap, testing negative, maybe it’s just not enough sleep with the baby, baby gets first fever, extra no-sleep, test again, still negative, should I cancel the shows anyway? Big reviewer coming in, etcetera).
Anyway, the upshot is I got a nice review in Chortle and everyone’s well, if somewhat floopy.
Let’s hope it results in more ticket sales:
Right oh! The clocks have changed again, so I’ll have to figure out better times for the salons. If you like attending the salons and have a time/day that’s most or least convenient for you, drop it in the comments and I’ll try to factor in as many people as I can when planning the new times.

Dad: I saw some ads for the Melbourne comedy on the television.
Me: oh lovely
Dad: But they never have you in them.
Me: No
Dad: but the podiatrist said she’d look you up. She likes comedy.
End scene.
Today’s salon was lovely. I’m thinking of writing up (anonymised) broad summaries of the subjects we all addressed afterwards, because I think they’re so interesting, and they always open out into really cool...

As always:
Salon’s moving to Thursday/Friday this week, because on Tuesday/Wednesday this week I’m moving house. Or rather packing up my flat, and reducing everything back down to as close to a suitcase as I can get it because I’ll be spending the next four or five months on the road. It’s quite a satisfying exercise in boiling life back down, picking each object and running it through its imagined future utility, taking it, giving it, leaving it at Dad’s house to meet me later down...

I’ve got a friend who’s an art curator - she helps hang paintings in galleries and figure out where exhibitions should go and how to engineer the displays of big complicated works so people can see them without getting crushed to death etc. It’s one of those odd super specialised skill sets that you’re unlikely to think about unless you know someone who does it, or have one of those slightly surreal moments of perspective about how much work goes into almost everything. “Someone...

Hallo lovely Patreonites - I have returned from trying to do the live performance part of my job in Adelaide with the re-re-re-written CHRONOS. The show by now is such a palimpsest of new-show-on-old-show that the name CHRONOS has aquired an increasingly meta level of self commentary.
Doing this test run with ‘Laser’ Fraser changed the nature and quality of the festival, of course. All the peripheral stuff that makes a festival feel like a festival took a back seat to th...

Jump down to the bottom for two-for-one ticket code if you want to dodge technical photography slash baby logistics chat.
I KNOW i promised not to share baby photos, but here you go. This is the exception that proves the rule. I feel this is sufficiently protective of little Laser Fraser’s privacy. One of the stories that I heard from people who have been parents was that their baby would only fall asleep in some idiosyncratic way that would wrec...

Next week I’m going to Adelaide. I have sold 35 out of 400 tickets so far. Which is either due to people’s current unwillingness to commit themselves to things in advance lest the norm suddenly go flop again, OR due to the fact that I haven’t been gigging/plugging as much as might be necessary to sell more tickets, OR due to the fact that Adelaide. I’m watching cascades of memories and photographs on my timeline, and feeling completely unable to find the words to add to them. It’s good to see people connecting over shared and different stories, telling each other what was good, what was special, how they felt when they first met, or when they last saw. I imagine he’d have found it quite funny.
Part of me feels compelled to add something. ‘I knew him too!’, ‘I cared about him in this way’. Another...

Hallo lovely Patreonites.
I’m writing this in the early morning of a sleepless night spent waiting for someone on the other side of the world to die. It’s a uniquely modern version of an age old sadness. A very helpless feeling, being kept up to date with life and death by messages, at such a vast distance. Though as ever with the approach of death, whatever your proximity, you’re always helpless.
It’s one of those invisible covid deaths. An illness that needed treatment...
