I don't think I ever animated a generic sneak before so I decided to give it a little go based off the Preston Blair book. The mouse is slightly inspired by Little Roquefort.
There's quite a few things wrong with it and that's the curse of cycles. Flaws are amplified every time it occurs on screen; the head is like snapping back so fast it's like a whiplash, perspective issues on the feet, inconsistent construction and design in general. I mean, it was just a test done for the sake of it...

I'm actually almost done inking this one, but here's the last pencil test I did. Bit of a wonky chair spin, but I think it's good enough for a short gag.

Sampled The Space And Me by Angel Pocho Gatti with the gritty Zoom ST-224 and mucked about with effects and drums and such.
Splitting the sample into bass and the chords was handy, 'cause then I could use a Octavider to make the bass an octave deeper; the chords were split up and pitch shifted (one a fifth up, the other an octave up), panned about and reverbed. So it's all rather trippy really.

I do those kind of doodles just to give myself a crude idea of how the physics is working in a given scene.
Also apologies for not releasing all that much content as of late; or at least anything of narrative depth and entertainment like. Just a few more months of A-levels then I'm free (to fill out more paperwork, probably for college or worse).

Apologies for the unpleasant title, but that's just what the rhythmic pulsing of the synth sounds like to me! The reverb comes from plugging the synth into a guitar amp pressed up next to the piano's soundboard, vibrating the strings.

I found out by pressing down the sustain on a piano, the strings vibrate to sounds so you get a kind of harmonic reverb. So here's a scary Jasper synth plugged into a guitar amp pressed up against the sound board of an old Baldwin. I'll do something more melodic (and better recording of the actual strings) in the future 'cause it's quite a nice effect when the strings' harmonics and the synth's frequencies match up.

Messed up the perspective a little bit, but oh well - as long as I'm aware of why it's wrong.

In both senses 'cause the Casiotone "Vibes" preset is used throughout. The key to giving electronic music some kind of humanity is hand played synths and to have some real instruments and percussion here and there. Even in tiny dosages (not in this case) it'll transform your flat, repetitive churnings into a soulful piece of grooviness.

The beat first came from mucking about with the Funky Drummer break put through a Boss RPS-10 then I slowed it down, chopped 'n screwed it, and turned it into some sort of sloppy urban track.

3DCG ain't quite there yet in terms of fitting into wobbly 2D cartoons, so I figured stop-motion props could be the next step forward. (or backward?)

Here's how I go about doing a breakdown when animating. This scene will end up in the update video when I get it done.

Samples from: Madness - One Step Beyond, The Curry Song, Monster Munch advert, WarioWare Smooth Moves, Bathman dal pianeta Eros, Swing You Sinners
Playing real drums with the electronic ones really helps keep the drums from being repetitive sounding.
Oh yes, just a little update, once I make something that's been put on here first public to everyone else (like with music or animations) I'll be making it public on here also.

I don't know if it was worth colouring the drawings in ToonBoom manually but heyho!

Put the drawings in Toonboom so now I can draw extra frames between the keys/extremes I did traditionally.

Quite surprising that only 74 drawings in and the papers reached a point where I'm hardly able to keep track of it. The timing and spacings a bit off, but I'm pleased with the drawings. What I may do in the future is animate keys and extremes traditionally, but do all the inbetweening and clean up digitally (still done in a traditional fashion, just with a tablet.)

Bunch of wood, jigsaw, router, perspex etc. Decided not to go for the Acme pegbar route and just use some spacers as typical A4 punch pegs. Woodglue was used to keep the perspex flush with the disk. And castor wheels were used to hold up the disc in the wooden panel that it was cut from as you will see in a video I'll upload in a sec. That part was inspired by the animation desks made by Fleischer Studios back in the 30s.

Some inking, more inbetweens, and shot with a DSLR rather than DV camera. Still some choppy bits, like the arm coming in and the 6 being shot but I'll get to that. (Apologies for the flickering; the consequence of low energy lighting.)

This is usually what the first pencil test looks like when I traditionally animate. Pretty low quality so I can just quickly test if everythings clear and timed nicely. There's not much animation, it's mostly keys and breakdowns with some bursts of animation. This is just so I know if I'm on the right track before cleaning up the drawings and doing inbetweens.
I'm not planning on having the animation be that tidy and fluid for this update video, so I'm traditionally animating in the hope that ...

My animation desk is rather limited, it's just some standoffs drilled into a lightbox. That way I can use normal punched A4 paper rather than ripoff "acme" punched animation paper.

An idea I quickly jotted down. The idea's that as long as I have the layout in digital form, once I scan in the animation I only have to realign it with scale/rotation/position since digital is magic.
