Commissioner's OC, Work-In-Progress

Awhile back, I shared a WIP of a commission I did of a reader's original character, called Limelight. The final was posted on Oct. 13. Here's another of the same person's characters, this one called Lady Packrat. This will be another work-in-progress series, as you can see. You can already see things that have changed from the first sketch to the more finished pencils. Hope you enjoy the process.

Happy Belated Easter (Commission)

Considering the powerful supernatural entities Fire and Brim' have gone up against, you'd think they could handle one horny Easter Bunny. Or maybe that's just the form some demon is taking. I'd hate to think of this thing sneaking into kids' homes with pastel-colored baskets of god-knows-what on Easter Eve. Or anyone's home, for that matter. Funny thing is, I somehow feel sorrier for Brim' in this case. Hers is just a more....relatable predicament....

"In for Servicing"

Here's another one that's been kicking around for awhile, but something always kept me from proceeding with it. I came across it this week and it hit me: I didn't like the original face. The reason I never realized that was the problem was that, paradoxically, I always liked the face. To explain... there were aspects of the face that I really liked, but there was something wrong with it. So I kept what worked, evened out some asymmetry and adjusted propo...

Devil Girl Sketch

Hey, all. Waayy back (well, you can see it was in '04), I di this sketch at San Diego Comic- Con. I could have sworn I posted a version of it here before, but I went back over previous posts and didn't see it. I don't recall if I did it for a fan, or just for the hell of it, but I've always liked it. I like the face, the body is cute, and I don't know where the floating horns are, but I love that. I'm planning on doing a color version for Cheesecake of Horror...

Abbey Serves Up Some Pie (sketch)

Here's another sketch of Abbey enjoying the company of an accommodating gentleman, this time of the gillman variety. I don't remember if this was for a commission or maybe a gallery of adult pinups, but I'm pretty sure no finished version ever saw print. I wonder if Nessie ever met this guy. He seems right up her alley, so to speak.

Evil Deja Vu Commission

For those not familiar with my character Deja Vu's backstory, she used to be an incredibly powerful witch...and an even bigger bitch. I tend to just refer to her old self as "evil Deja" (though Deja wasn't her name back then). I've done a few pinup commissions of her in the past (at least one of which can be seen on this page), and here's another--or the pencils of one, anyway. I hate posting a piece without the blacks, but I think most of you know what all those...

A Page from a M'Lady Story

I found a bunch of sketched and penciled pages from some adult shorts, three of them M'Lady stories. So I thought I'd grab some at random and go over them, make them presentable, and, well, present them here. If there's enough interest, I might finish them properly and post the complete stories here. This page is from a short called "Ice Skating", in which the princess's dragon falls through the ice, and the princess has to find a way to "warm him up." Most of th...

Forlorn Website Graphics

Once upon a time, there was going to be a very cool website for my work. But then, I thought it might be wiser to go with a bunch of half-assed social media sites and an unsearchable Patreon page. If you recall the graphics of Blue (from Blue Grind) that I posted awhile back, they were intended for the same website. They would have been colored and used as buttons for people to click on, things like that. These (obviously) would have been for the Bon...

Nessie Con sketch

The title says it all, really. Someone at a con (San Diego, I assume, since they were nice enough to make a copy for me...which makes me think this might have been...Dave? I don't remember) asked for a nudie Nessie, and this is what I came up with. These are usually pretty well received. I used to wonder what other attendees made of my character sketches if they saw them. Let's face it, my characters aren't exactly widely-known icons; did the Wolverine, Harley Qu...

Beauties & Beasts: "Inner Light" Pencil Render

Hey all. Here's another one with a backstory. The sketch for this has been kicking around for so long that the bare pencil outlines had all but rubbed off the paper. I had to find the color sketch and reconstruct it from that. In doing so I noticed that when I did the color sketch, for some reason I continued the design much further down-probably just because the paper was there so I filled it. Weird thing is, I like the color sketch version better. I might do a ...

Old Painting with a Beauties & Beasts Feel

Last week was a weird one. I've been "helping" my friend Grayson Fogg with a couple of sculpts for a deadline (designing, building armatures, sculpting, painting--that kind of help), so my time has been stretched paper-thin. I thought I was on track to bring you a new Beauties and Beasts piece this week, then about mid-week realized I wouldn't make it. I couldn't do it as a WIP because it's oversized, and every time I scanned it I would have had to digitally stit...

A Madam and One of Her Girls from the Autumnlands

Since  I'm helping Grayson on a deadline right now, I thought it might be fitting to share one of his pieces. Here's a work-in-progress, a portrait of two working girls--well, a madam and one of her employees--from a cathouse in the Autumnlands. Grayson hopes to put out two books: The Autumnlands, and Portraits of the Autumnlands. No telling in which volume the finished version of this piece might appear.

Slamhounds Designs

I've been spending some big chunks of time scanning my sketchbooks, in order to bring you some of my work process and images you otherwise would never see. Here we have some early redesigns for the characters from Slamhounds. Most of you know that Dash was changed from an anthropomorphic rabbit alien to an aquatic-based alien, but these close-ups show some of the mementos she's been left with after serving as Vengus Marr's puppet bounty hunter: chiefly, ...

Beauties & Beasts: Treasure Chest (pencils)

Whew. This one took awhile. It started with the note "pirate attacked by tentacles" scribbled in a corner of a sketchbook--simple enough to jot down, but a bit more complicated and time-consuming to realize. First there was arriving at the right pose for the pirate (originally her legs were wrapped together by a tentacle, but that made her look weak and passive, rather than aggressive and heroic), then there were the tentacles to compose and make sure no...

Beauties & Beasts: "Loyal"

Hi, all. The idea for this Beauties and Beasts piece came to me last week and it just sort of fell together. A couple of funny things about it, both related to faces. Unless I'm working with a specific model, I usually don't have a specific face in mind, just a "type", and sometimes not even that. I just play around with facial shapes and features, drawing and redrawing until I wind up with a face I like. This is the second time I've wound up with a face that fel...

Meg and Centaur Commission

Here we have a commission of Meg enjoying the company of a centaur friend. Does this cross a line for anyone? For me, it does not, because I refuse to acknowledge those lines when it comes to art...except for those that will get you cancelled these days. (Whoever thought Big Brother would turn out to be our fellow citizens with too much time on their hands, and outrage and virtues to signal on the Internet?) What bugs me about this piece is the guy. Look at him. ...

Beauties and Beasts: "Secret Snacking"

Here we have--obviously--another Beauties and Beasts piece. It's a simple depiction of a witch out for a relaxing night flight with her familiar. (The moon is barely visible, because in the final, color version the sky will be overcast, with the moon glowing through the clouds.) Said familiar is sneaking a bucket of fried chicken...whether because he's on a diet or because he just doesn't want to share, I don't know. I'm not sure if it reads or not, but that's a ...

Fire & Brimstone Commission

Demons seem to have only one thing on their minds, at least in the world of commissions. This is the sort of activity Fire would normally be quite enthusiastic about, so I have to assume it's a control thing; she likes being the one doing the boning. But take a close look at Brim--is it just me, or does she not seem to be disliking this as much as you'd expect? Maybe she's a secret sub? Hmm...

Beauties & Beasts: "Head Cheese"

Oops. Would you like some text with that post? I've been sculpting at night lately, and I tend to forget everything else when I'm sculpting...including adding text to posts before they auto-post. *sigh*

This piece--another Beauties and Beasts design, obviously--has a long history. I first sketched the original version over a decade ago, but there were problems.  I wasn't satisfied with the female figure, but I ...

Macabre Alternate Cover Designs and Color Sketches

New Sticker Sunday: Jynx

Would I really put out a sticker from a title that hasn't even been published? Of course! I've done it before, right? Ninety percent of my titles won't see print before I kick off, so why not? For those who don't know, this is Jynx, one of the stars of Superzeroes, an action-comedy in the vein of The Incredibles, but a little darker. You gotta love a 110-pound chick who dresses like a '90s fly girl but could give some of the heaviest hitters in ...

Robin in Repose

I wanted to provide some Boneyard content this week, and this time Robin takes center stage. This was a commission of a simple nude, which is always great; it gives me a lot of latitude to create something pretty. Not much more to say about this one, really, except that Ralph is one lucky werewolf.

M'Lady & the Manticore, "Fleshed-Out"

We saw her a few weeks back in sketch form, and here she is, fully rendered. I'll be painting this piece, so this is the next step in that process. I need to do a color sketch that I like, because I absolutely hated the one I did back when I first sketched this.

Drawing this reminded me that years ago I made a conscious decision to radically change the way I work. I don't just mean technique, though that has changed drastically...

What is with Meg and Ogres?

Hey, all. I've got another Meg-with-ogres pinup commission for you...hope you're not getting tired of them. This is going to be my only post for this week, unfortunately. We lost Obie last week. Meg Gets Friendly with a Swamp Witch

Before the first Far West series, I did a couple of shorts to shop around to publishers. One of those, called "Tasty Pretty", if I recall correctly, was about a swamp witch who tried to seduce/entrance Meg in order to, uh, eat her (pun intended or not, you choose). Meg handled it in typical Meg fashion. The above image is a commission depicting an alternate direction things might have gone. Who wants to see that version?

Rough Beauties & Beasts(?) Design

This may seem like just another penciled piece waiting to be fleshed out, but in fact it's a raw design straight from my sketchbook. The title identifies it as a Beauties and Beasts image, but I haven't decided if the final version will be that or included in a Googie collection or possibly Seductive Space Sirens, the planned follow-up to the alliterative Voluptuous Vampire Vixens. In fact, if you can decipher my chick...
