Interlude tomorrow...

Got a blazing headache today so I'm delaying the interlude until tomorrow when I can get it proofed.

An Arcane Engineer in Another World: Book I Exile. Chapter 2

I’d expected to walk into hell. Or maybe heaven. Or maybe wake up and find out that this was a bad dream.

Instead, I walked into a fucking snowstorm. I couldn’t see a thing, and the snow was hitting me like a solid force.

And I hated the cold. Cloak, jacket, pants, all the clothing that had been so warm was now barely keeping me from freezing as I felt the cold just sink into my bones.

I looked back and even with the lousy vision I had…

Yeah. Th...

An Arcane Engineer in Another World: Book I Exile. Chapter 1

There are a lot of places where you can consider your life choices. That day you first became an apprentice. That day you learned that Teresa was dating Gorath and considered making an unnamable bargain to bring her back. (Or going to the inn and drowning your sorrows, which was my actual choice. According to my friends, I was a weepy drunk.)

Sitting in a cell, waiting for my execution? Yeah, that’s another place.

I probably should have listened to Dad when he warned me that...

Nikos stood, smiling down at the detective in the backyard where he had chosen to have the little ceremony. He smirked. She'd be a fine addition to his little family, her mind working to help her beloved. and maybe he'd reward her, now and then. Behind him, in his house, his others stood, some of his children, the actresses and cheerleaders he chose (for why accept an...

Orb Weaver: Consequences, 8

I got out of the hospital early. Amy had come by, checked me out, and I was able to do the full walk and exercise thing so they weren’t worried I’d fall over.

Even with her limitations, it was amazing how she could turn what might be weeks or longer into a single week.

I wasn’t complaining. That single week had felt like months, especially with my need to control how much I used my bugs. At least people accepted the idea that Orb Weaver was… resting.

Or digesting his...

Call it Moses... Investigations From All Sides

Jarra didn’t like it. Her Master had warned her about staying away from the Empire. “Master” was what Jarra had called Kara. Kara had told her that she hadn’t been a Knight, or even a Padawan… just an Initiate. But she was the closest thing Jarra had to a teacher, and so Master Kara it was.

“Once there were endless libraries… I wish you could have seen them. Holocrons, studies with Master Yoda and Master Windu…”  Kara had told her one night when she’d closed...

I would like to say the week went fast. It didn’t. It went slowly. Agonizingly slowly. I got stronger, but not fast enough for all that the staff seemed more than satisfied. Three days after I’d awakened, I was officially informed that I could bathe and use the toilet without someone standing by.

Small victories.

But in between that, I met with some of the people from the PRT to talk about issues going forward. For one thing, mail filters. “You’re gonna need it,” the PRT...

Call it Moses: Changing Plans

I leave Jarra to her devices and ensure that the other children are fed. They are mostly traumatized, although I have little information on how to treat such conditions. A pair of medical droids stay with them, and I arrange quarters by the suite Jarra is currently occupying.

Damage is being repaired, but my spares and supplies are also declining. It would not be an issue if I had supply points, or if I did not have to worry about combat, but neither is the case. And I have enough for p...

Orb Weaver: Conseuences, 6

The next morning, I had a… bland breakfast.

I understood all the reasons, hospitals needed to provide for a wide range of dietary needs, while taking into account the possibility of allergies, drug interactions, and taste buds off due to illness or injury…

But I couldn’t help but think and feel some unjustified annoyance over the image of the people of the Bay eating ham, eggs, and—

No. That just made it worse. With that, I started eating.

With only a little gr...

Call It Moses: Departures

B765 was a squad commander. Not like the base B1 droids, the advanced B1s included better processors. B765 did not feel pride at that self-evident fact. But now, six droids, including two with rotary blasters were moving out.

“B765,” Memory  said. “Engineer drones believe the ship will be ready for launch in twenty minutes. You must block the enemy.”

“Roger.”

“I am afraid other combat units will not be ready. All engineering systems are dedicated for prepa...

Possible future fic? (Sophia Hess: Agent of Cauldron)

When Orb Weaver is finished (not for a while yet, don't panic and/or sigh in relief), I'm trying for some non-Taylor centric fics. This was a snippet from my slush pile, so what do people think?

I push Taylor down. The girl looks up at me as I press my foot onto her head.

"C'mon Hebert! You look better down on the ground."

Just like it demanded I wait 30 seconds in the alley.

Side Story: Madison's School Days 3

Madison was calming down as they drove down the road, sirens blaring. Krewe had been muttering about cavities, but Madison was listening to Aegis. At least she knew what she had to do. All she had to do was tell people where to go. That wasn’t bad.

“Right,” Aegis said. “While Velocity is going over what we’re doing with the authorities, I want to go over our targets. We’ve got Flamehands…” he showed a page, a girl with a mohawk and angry expression on it. “She can heat...

I had gotten used to getting up early. In fact, I had managed to time things so that I could get by on about 5 hours sleep a night with a few catnaps in the day.

Which meant I was very annoyed when a cheerful voice woke me up. Looking out at the Bay through the PRT window, it looked like it was at least 10:00AM…

How the hell did I sleep so long?

And then there was the meal in front of me. Protein, carbs, a meal designed to give me the food needed to fuel ...

How the fuck many are there? Hank wondered. It hadn’t been a day after the first group of fucks tried to kill him that another one came out, looking for him. He hadn’t used his guns—didn’t have ammunition to waste. They even had a wagon. But Hank didn’t run. They also had horses, and he bet that wagon had supplies—that he was gonna need.

But they never seemed to have run into a warrior adept before. Hank moved through one’s defense, punching him in the chest and s...

The office wasn’t like Dr. Mattis’ office. There were no bars on the windows. Madison waited until the psychologist, Dr. Cheng, gestured for her to sit.

“So, I take it the locker triggered a bit of a memory?” he asked.

Madison ducked her head and nodded.

“These things happen,” he replied, sounding… nice. “Rome wasn’t built in a day, and people don’t accept that they’ve changed in a day… or longer.”

It took them over a week to get to Winterfell. During that time, Will wondered how someone could be a witch—and yet so ignorant of well, everything.

Dad stayed with me for a while, once I was taken back to the hospital room. I’d be staying at the PRT HQ, in their infirmary.

I didn’t take much imagination to realize I was also under protective custody, in case Orb Weaver showed up.

Which drastically reduced what I could do. It was irritating, that people trying to help me were actually hindering me.

But…

I didn’t need my bugs with Leviathan. Sure, they would be convenient, but… I shouldn’t get to whe...

Wendy frowned. She’d gotten up that morning, killed and ate a rabbit (no devil rats here, at least) and then tried to find… anyone. Her phone wasn’t getting connection and she was gonna curse the rap at the local Saeder Krupp Phone Co—they said they got reception anywhere.

And there was no grid.

No airplanes in the sky.

But it doesn’t feel like a metaplane.  She’d set the phone’s inertial guidance system so she could get back where she started. View Post

Some more delays.

As everyone knows, the God Daughter is autistic, and has not been doing well in her first few weeks of high school. (by which I mean, we're getting calls every day).

This part of Orb Weaver I really want to work well, so there may be some delays. But I have another little story idea that I'll use to fill it out, where some shadowrunners find themselves on Planetos and things... escalate.
