Chapter 10:
Desari awoke to someone hammering on her door.
Her eyes flicked over the room, calming her breathing and lowering the dagger in her hand.
Mya looked up from the book she was reading, hand on her pistol pointed at the door.
“Who is it?” Desari called out rising from her bed, slipping her feet into her boots. Thankful she’d cleaned her gear and changed clothes before going to bed, moving along the wall to look out the window. The fighting had worn her o...

Valter kept himself relaxed, moving his limbs to warm them up.
A path had been cleared through the remains of the cathedral, wooden fortifications had been thrown up hastily.
“Alright past this point you’re only allowed to take your tools. Use that cart there to stack them. If you have storage devices put them into one of the boxes and then you can pick them up after you’re done.” The guard leading them said, staring at Valter.
Valter took off the metal storage devic...

Petor’s spear shot out with enough force to pierce armor, his spear head smacked weapons away, moving with swings and jabs.
“They’ve got too many ladders on the wall. We can’t get rid of them all,” Valter fired a burst of three arrows, taking down three enemy fighters.
Petor pressed into the opening, wielding his spear. Each attack a war of fatigue against the essence he drained to recover.
He read the attacks as the formed. His spear like a snake alive. His blows ...

“Use the ballista,” Mya fired, reloading by feel she jutted her chin towards the shadow burned part of the wall. “Stick some of your crazy balls to them and see what happens.” She pulled back on the lever under her rifle aimed and fired.
Petor checked the ballista, everything was in the right place.
He drew back the lever wheel at the base, drawing it back easily, he grabbed a handful of the shot, putting them in the trough against the pouch that would have secured a bolt....

Chapter 9:
Petor held onto his reins, trying to get small as boulders and fire pots smashed into buildings around them.
“This way!” Mya turned down a street, her mount’s horseshoes sparking on the cobbles. Turning away from a sea of fire that covered their path.
“Doesn’t seem the smartest to be running towards the wall under that!” Valter yelled.
“Left!” Mya turned, a boulder crashing through a building, the lanterns breaking and flaring inside...

Chapter 8: Return to adventurer guild, increase in tensions
Petor finished his breakfast, draining his tea, watching the door and the stairs.
Mya staggered in through the door, eyeing the now cold plates at the table with a ravenous light.
She crossed the room in a blur and took her seat, Helena arriving with tea.
“Can I take that?”
“Please Helena and if you have some more of that fine tea?” Petor smiled.
“Ah, just trying to sweet talk me.” Her ...

Valter lowered his metal book, turning his crossed feet propped on the anvil to the side, studying the ingots on the top of the workbench and then his tools.
He put the book away at the sound of approaching footsteps and stood.
The bald scarred man looped his fingers behind his apron.
“What’s your name?”
“Valter.”
The bald man rubbed his nose and pointed over to the side where several men and women were working on those magical belts, sparks flying down...

Chapter 7:
Petor kept one hand close to his dagger as he and Mya walked through Sorelli, hunched against the rain, she looked positively happy under her hat.
Movement caught his eyes down an alleyway, slowing his steps. A muddied girl, barely ten pulled off a guards boots with practiced ease while her father and elder brother relieved him of his purse, armor and anything else of value with quick flashes of their blades.
The boy looked up, barely older than his sister, holdin...

“Fear is good, it tells you that you don’t know enough, or that you don’t think you do. Fear is the mind killer, use it as the fuel.” She pulled out spell books before she could think too much about them. She’d read through several of them, while the concepts made sense, it was on a level well beyond what she was able to do.
Just how powerful was I before this? All of her power came from knowledge. Her killing instincts the fighting, that had been ingrained into her b...
