The main cavern of Firebase Threshold had never been so quiet. The hammers were silent, the factories still, the constant hum of construction and industry replaced by an eerie absence of sound. The Combat engineers and soldiers were dressed in clean lines, creating a perfect square. The civilians stood behind and around them, forming a solemn perimeter.
Len marched down the center aisle, his footsteps echoing in the cavernous space.
He’d cleansed his uniform and did what h...

Petor returned to the forge to find several men and women assisting Valter and his armors—now all of the armor had been upgraded to Othir. They stood at the same stature as Valter, glinting with an ethereal sheen.
They were starting to wind down and clear up the last of gear.
He'd spent the day checking on the growing shipyard and the first few ships, then a quick tour of the farms to assess the plants and give the farmers insights into speeding up their growth and production.

Len exited the tunnels leading to the pillboxes, entering the main cavern, moving towards the medical bay close to the tunnel exit's cavern entrance.
Inside, Zannish and other civilians that had undergone the rough medic course on their way to Halem forest moved between beds, treating those from Pillbox Two.
“Bed!” Len yelled.
“This one!” someone slapped a stone bed. Zannish wholly focused on the patient infront of him.
Len put the wounded man down, people swar...

A woman's voice, desperate and faint, whispered through Valter's mind. "Protect me Valter."
The vision crystallized. A woman astride a mud-splattered horse galloped through dense forest, her face gaunt and drawn. Three riders flanked her, their expressions and movements that of grim veterans with a lifetime in the saddle. Their mounts' hooves thundered against the earth, sending clods of dirt flying.
"Can't move where I'm looking, just locked to what she's looking at," Valter mutt...

Petor stretched as he stepped out of the warehouse, the early morning light spilling across the island. The air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of salt.
"Feels weird being in civvies." He shifted around in the clothes—they felt so light compared to the armor he was used to.
"Though they look better than the clothes I used to wear. Mya and Desari have an eye for these things at least."
Petor glanced toward Valter's silver-anvil forge, where the man was bent over a glowi...

The firebase's tunnels echoed with battle—the sporadic gunfire from the pillboxes had turned nearly continuous, only pausing to reload, punctuated by the occasional concussive thump of shoulder cannons.
Len's footsteps added a steady rhythm as he jogged through the rough-hewn passages connecting the western defensive positions.
Len felt the vibration of impacts through the stone around him, debris occasionally showering down from the ceiling where construction had yet to b...

Night was a darkening promise in the sky as Petor walked through the warehouse district nearest the docks.
"You know where Valter is?" Petor asked a passing Mardun—everyone was heading up the hill and towards the temple for the ceremony.
"Valter? Never heard of the name," The man raised his eyebrow.
"Large fella, hard to miss, in armor, black hair and beard?" Petor asked.
"Oh, the one that's working at the forge?" The man snapped his fingers.
"That would probab...

Len, Christina, Clyde and several other engineers reworked the engine design, sketching components and calculating power requirements. When they finished, the engine’s shape had changed drastically to make it easier for components to be pulled out, and newer enchanted versions put back in.
“That should be at least the first three versions,” Christina said. She glanced around and lowered her voice so only he could hear. “Why are we doing this?”
“We need to do some moons...

Spitter-fire raked the tree-line as a werewolf looking beast tore out of the trees, half of its body looked like it had been struck with lighting that glowed through the furrows in its body.
The mana mutated werewolf clawed the ground, skipping between boulders and bodies, only for another burst to strike it, the steel enchanted rounds detonating against its hide, before penetrating and detonating inside it.
It staggered forward, two other spitters joining in to end the threat.

Petor walked beside Desari down the stone ramp from the tower's base. Her shoulders slumped, and dark circles rimmed her eyes. The usual sharp intensity of her gaze had dulled.
"How are you holding up?" he asked.
Desari rolled her shoulders, wincing slightly. "Better now, teleporting a tower across an ocean is one thing. Teleporting the whole island and said tower as one—thankfully I didn't have to use any of my mana—just guide the whole thing."
"You make it sou...

In the shadow of what was once called Chicago, now known only as the Hollow Spires, dawn was still hours away. The darkness stretched thick between piles of rubble that had once been buildings.
Nature had tried to find a foothold in this city, corrupted and twisted by the forces and energies that gathered within the city like a stain.
It left the nature minimal and thin, the wind howling as it passed through bare trees and unknown remains of a time when humanity had ruled t...

Lady Carolyn Isendia stood at the head of the long oak table, watching her commanders file into the Council Chamber. Morning light streamed through the high windows, illuminating motes of dust and the detailed maps spread across the polished surface. The room still bore scars of Goran's fall—a patched section of wall, a mismatched stone in the fireplace—but like the city itself, it was functional again. Different, but alive.
Tyrus hadn’t cared for the room. Hadn’t cared for the ...

Len checked the mana gathering formation that he’d placed at the opening into the mountain.
It gathered and routed the mana into the tunnel and rails-charging and powering the train and the enchantments added to it.
It also bled off into a charging station where cores had been placed, absorbing the mana. Powering everything was a bonus to reducing the mana density within the mountain.
The changed materials that had blown into the mountain had been cleared up and were being...

Through the nearest firing slit, Len could see the prismatic storm intensifying, rings of energy expanding outward. Where it passed the world was changed.

Mandibles shoved through a wall and tightened; Len drew his sword as the wall was torn apart.

Petor took out seeds from his storage device and threw them towards the walls as he fell, a few hundred meters between him and the bottom of the tower.
The seeds expanded into ever-burning brambles before they hit the walls. Thorns dug into the rough surface as the plants quickly spread and started to create netting between one another.
He threw out gale seed flowers to adher to the walls just as wind gathered around him, slowing his descent.

The world around them was bleak and foreboding as they materialized atop the dark gods’ prison. The air was heavy, thick with mana, and the skies above were a roiling sea of black clouds. Petor was the last to arrive at the command center. Passing through his third security check before he was allowed inside.
The room was tense with Mya over the map table.

She commanded Osola itself. All of the rituals that were laid down upon the land and within it at her command.
Raw magical energy surged through her body, setting every nerve aflame. The...

Len's boots crunched over a carpet of crystallized vegetation as he sprinted through Halem’s mana-twisted forest, Rick draped over his shoulders in a fireman's carry. The trees around them had transformed—once-normal pines bark now cracked with blue, purple and other neon colors that pulsed with power, their needles crystallized into razor-sharp fragments that chimed eerily in the wind.
The world slumbered in the heart of night. The mana affected forest illuminated with a different ...

Petor watched as the landing craft ground against Osola's shores with harsh scraping sounds.
Armored soldiers splashed down into the water, their plate armor catching the morning sun as they struggled against the waves. The heavy metal weighed them down, but they pushed forward with determination, holding their weapons above the surf.
The first wave of troops made slow progress through the chest-deep water. Their movements were awkward and stilted as the ocean tried to drag ...
