Chapter 12:
Desari awoke to someone hammering on her room’s door. They’d spent a few hours at the guild hall submitting their report, eating, getting some pay and then heading back to the inn.
Her eyes flicked over the room, calming her breathing and lowering the dagger in her hand.
Mya looked up from the book she was reading, hand on her pistol pointed at the door.
“Who is it?” Desari called out rising from her bed, slipping her feet into her boots. Thankful s...

Chapter 11:
Desari led the group into the guild courtyard.
Mounted guild members flowed into the stables, she passed them, moving for the entrance as a group of adventurers were hauled out, some going peacefully, one of them fighting, basically carried by four guards.
“What the hell are you doing, do you know who I am?” A man yelled as he was hauled towards a barred carriage, fighting with four guards at the same time as a priest wearing a mask followed them.
“Yo...

Petor grabbed the stones remaining in the box and threw them over the wall
Another ladder reached the top of the wall. Petor threw the box over the wall and drew his spear, using the butt to push the ladder back and over.
The enemy had made it to the walls, giving the stone and shadow golems a wide berth. A siege tower was hit with a catapult’s payload, raining wood on those around it.
“They’re making it forward.”
“Push the ladders free!” Valter yelled.

Petor and Desari were eating their breakfast, Valter was shovelling his down, and a glorious forth breakfast was waiting for her.
“Learn anything useful last night?” Desari asked as she sat down.
She told them about Clemens, Helena and the mining settlement, their findin...

Mya’s smile faded. Just what the hell have you found yourself in now Mya?
She took in a breath, the whole sensation felt weird, smile firmly in place she headed down the stairs into the tavern. People took up tables, leaning over their drinks and talking in low voices to their drink-mates.
“Helena, another one!” A man put down his tankard at the bar.
Mya recognized the voice.
“Ah Clemens!”
He turned his head.

Chapter 9:
Mya perked up first and waved, drawing Petor’s attention as Desari walked into the guild’s front doors.
She pulled back her hood and sat down at the last seat at the table.
Valter and Mya were already well into their stew, the two of them barely having come up for air.
Petor had put away a bowl already but there was a desperate kind of hunger to the duo.
Desari sat down at the chilling stew and started in on it.

Petor kept one hand close to his dagger as he and Mya walked through Sorelli, hunched against the rain, she looked positively happy under her hat.
Movement caught his eyes down an alleyway, slowing his steps. A muddied girl, barely ten pulled off a guards boots with practiced ease while her father and elder brother relieved him of his purse, armor and anything else of value with quick flashes of their blades.

She knew she was dying and she knew the gods were powerful and that Vessali had turned into their champion buoyed by their powers and with unlimited access to their reserves.
A spell came forth within her mind. Not one of the beautiful synergy of elements, but their destructive and chaotic interaction.
“Fuck the Empire.”
She coughed and latched onto Vessali, his triumph turning to fear, that broken twisted boy, an existence that need not re...

Desari checked her guild request against the mortar and pestle sign swinging in the early morning wind.
Small warped glass windows showed the inside of the store, different liquids of every color caught in potion bottles. Carl’s Apothecary had been written on the sign, weather beaten and worn.
Desari opened the door the bell attached to the door ringing.
A man at the counter looked up from cradling his tea cup with bleary eyes. He blinked twice, wetting hi...

Valter rolled his shoulders, the heat from the forge waking up his body as he sank back into a rhythm, watching the different firebrick circles, mixing coke and iron pulling out the products and hammering them square.
Gus came around with more coke and iron, asking his question about quenching, why smiths hit their hammers on the anvil as they worked. His questions made Valter dive into his smithing knowledge more and checking what his book said.

Valter rolled his shoulders to bring the waterproof hide higher on his shoulders and against his neck. Eyes bouncing between alleyways and shadows that might hide a person.
The rain and clouds covered the sun that he’d guessed to be around midday.
Waste that had been thrown into the open gutters on the sides of the main roads were swept away with the day’s rain.
Valter pushed it from his mind. Getting out of this city was the priority. Then he could make...

Celestia ran through the halls of the sacred sanctum, the place closest to the gods of the Geraxi Empire. The mandates and prostlates glared at her but she paid them no heed, her feet ringing off the inlaid marble floor as she jumped up two steps at a time past murals depicting the wrath of the gods, their benevolence towards their followers.
They were in great numbers, they had been ever since that cursed battle with Ilus.
Celestia had wanted to run through these...
