Sketch Sunday - Poppy/Kit

It's been a while since I drew Poppy and Kit being lovey, and I had to vent.

Sketch Sunday - The Seven D*vas

The Seven D*vas ("Devas" or "Divas" depending on who you ask) were a group of seven extraordinary heroines who banded together to destroy a great calamitous dragon and its kin rampaging across the continent.

From left to right:

Rose Rani

Lincs and Miggy

The Tall Lady

Kalak

Laffi

D. D.

More information on each to come on the next Worldbuilding Wednesday update.

Sketch Sunday - Poppy and the Dragon

Here's an old sketch from a piece I did for an art show that's, sadly, been lost to the dead hard drive void. The properties of dragons were not fully established at this point, so this one ended up with normal eyes, albeit four of them.

Maybe I'll repaint it someday.

Worldbuilding Wednesday: Series and Character Concepts

Poppy as a Series

I've stated multiple times that originally, Poppy O'Possum started out as a videogame concept I had rattling around in my brain during my senior year at art school, so let's get into that original draft for a moment. Contrary to popular belief, it wasn't as a fighting game (although I'd once stated I occasionally draft characters by considering how their movesets would work if they were fighting game characters), but more in the vein of the many anim...

Seven Skies, I'm sure you'll live for real someday.

Sketch Sunday 7/1/18 - Rose

Earlier on in Rose's development, she looked a lot more like an older version of Petunia, but I figured that was a pretty boring design, so I softened her up a lot to contrast the most likely mental image her implied presence in Petunia's backstory conjures up.

She ended up having impossibly demure eyes and a somewhat unimposing angry face, as I thought it would be more interesting if Petunia's death glare was instead inherited from her father.

Rose certainly isn't a saint, but she...

Worldbuilding Wednesday: Bounty Hunters

While there are certainly state police forces in several pockets of Flora, there is still a general sense of lawlessness across the world, where grievances are settled primarily via the bounty system.

The Bounty Office was established roughly 1,500 years before Poppy begins by Handsome George, a tortoise who is currently living out his retirement from hunting by forcing students to punch trees and counting down the days until he kills himself.

 While there are many ty...

Sketch Sunday 4/15/18 - The Ape God Primato

Primato is the god of Apes and Japes. Like Sun Wukong, this god used their great strength and cunning to play tricks on their siblings. As their idea of a "trick" was often something along the lines of trapping someone underneath a mountain range, this did not make Primato a particularly well-liked god.

Primato's only weakness was their immense pride and overconfidence. They could never resist the call of a challenge, no matter how foolish, and in the event of a loss, they would steam and pout...

Sketch Sunday 4/8/18 - The Dog God Canis

Canis is the god of dogs and debate. Based on Cerberus, the left and right heads have minds of their own and will often take several hours discussing and second-guessing a decision as each raises equally good counter-arguments.

For this reason, hypothetical and philosophical questions present real threats to their ability to function. If you were ask, for instance, why a genderless, sexless, non-reproducing being would possess breasts, Canis will begin arguing incessantly until forced to...

Sketch Sunday 4/1/18 - The Cat God Felis!

Now that's more like it. Felis takes their inspiration from the Shí Shī, guardian lion-dogs of Buddhist myth, and is the god of cats and crags, living up to that moniker thanks to their completely impregnable stone armor. A distant, stubborn, and self-obsessed god, trying to get Felis to do anything they don't want to is like, well, trying to herd cats.

You'd think that wearing stone armor with no visible joints would make it hard to move, but through inexplicable means, th...

Sketch Sunday 3/25/18 - BIG

I wanted to provide a stark contrast between what Poppy looked like in this moment and what Petunia was seeing her as, so I decided to structure these two panels from pages 21 and 22/23 as direct parallels to each other.

Sketch Sunday 3/25/18 raincheck + double page updates going forward

The Sketch Sunday update for $3 and up patrons will go up immediately after the update tomorrow, as to avoid spoiling the double-page splash art I've been working on.

Additionally, just as a heads-up, although in the past, I've usually treated double-page spreads as a single update, in the future, I'll be numbering and charging them as two pages instead of one, much like how actual comic wages treat them. They take up an enormous amount of time and effort, and this update in particular is an a...
