Watch Out for Fireballs! Dispatch Roundup: Q1 2022

We've got a topic and Q&A overflow, and the only way to contain all of these questions is to round 'em up. This is the first of our regular WOFF! Dispatch Roundup episodes, which we will be doing once per quarter to make sure we get to all of your questions.

Topics Covered:

  • The future for From after Elden Ring.

  • Favorite X-COM clones.

  • Thoughts on loading times and loading screens.

  • What's our deal with fighting games?

Exquisite Suffering 140: Comix Zone

Comix Zone is one of the worst examples of style over substance in the 16-bit era that you'll find outside of Psygnosis games. A perennial inclusion on Sega collections, this brawler about a comic artist who is drawn into his work is just no very fun to play. So we instead pitch the improbable comic adventures of Kole, whose comic gets cancelled... and then things start getting weird in his shut-down world.

Watch Out for Fireballs! 355: The Beginner's Guide

In 2022, you can play a video game about almost anything. So why is it most games are about how friends are good and honor is nice? Can robots feel? Been there, done that.

The Beginner's Guide is a follow up to the wildly successful (and hilarious) The Stanley Parable dares to ask deeper and more personal questions about art and criticism. It's thematically rich and textually complex. Viva!

Exquisite Suffering 139: Project Overkill

I'm sorry this is posted out of order! For some reason my original version didn't post. Project Overkill is a simple game whose entire premise is contained in its name... What if you killed a bunch of dudes in a very awkward isometric shooter. That's it. That's the game.

ORB 80: It Happening One Night

It's time to witness the weirdest arching ever as Rusty goes up against the postmodern stylings of Wes Warhammer's Doom Factory. Styled after Andy Warhol's crew, they know exactly how to undo someone as vain as Dr. Venture. Meanwhile, Hank goes on his very sweet first date with Sirena, thanks to the help of his brother and Conjectural Technologies.

Everything to Guppy 853: Eye Of The Occult - Immaculate Heart - Monstrance - Mom's Kiss

Everything To Guppy is a weekly comedy/gaming podcast that releases four 15-minute episodes in a single hour-long chunk every Tuesday for reasons that seemed good at the time. Gary Butterfield (Watch Out For Fireballs) and William Hughes (The A.V. Club) attempt to analyze every single item, boss, character, and concept in the rogue-lite video game The Binding Of Isaac. They manage to pull it off only slightly less than 50 percent of the time.

Note: An original version of this episode went out that used the wrong name for Sophie Pillbeam, an error born of the disparity in time between when we recorded and when the episode was released. We've fixed the error out of respect, and apologize for our oversi...

Abject Suffering 452: Silhouette Mirage

This is probably someone's favorite game, which is weird to us. After the 16-bit era, Treasure kind of split in two. One part released bullet hell shooters. The other had a habit of making technical platformers that are impossibly ugly to look at. Silhouette Mirage falls into the latter camp, with a projectile affinity system that was a test run for Ikaruga's main gimmick.

Then we follow Melina to our home base: the Roundtable Hold to meet some Tarnished champions.

The Duckfeed Public Combo

Hello! This post is to explain how to subscribe to every publicly available show at once, with one single feed. This is for everyone who liked having the Early Release feed when we still offered that. We couldn't name this the Firehose, because that's a different thing, and that's confusing, so instead we're calling it The Duckfeed Public Combo.

Watch Out for Fireballs! Dispatch: Your Chuck E. Cheese Memories

As a reminder, the Early Release feed will be going away at the beginning of May. Keep your eye on the Patreon page for information about where to get your audio when that happens.

Unfilmable 38: The Wicker Man (1973)

The Wicker Man is a classic of folk horror, a foundational story about a man whose traditional ways and authority have no sway in a dangerous and unfamiliar environment. He's tracking down a missing girl, Rowan Morrison, on Summerisle, a Scottish island controlled by a pagan cult. This is a very weird movie, with a centerpiece performance by Christopher Lee as the main villain. It's brightly lit, it's a musical, and it's the horniest possible thing.

Meanwhile, Rusty is dealing with the next villain in line to arch him: the intelligent-yet-lonely Think Tank, who also happens to be Dean's philosophy professor.

Abject Suffering 451: Gourmet Warriors

This recently revived and translated SNES game is a little less food-oriented than the title would have you believe. It's not a complete lie, but what you get is a Cho-Aniki brawler with a little bit of cooking thrown in. Which is a bummer, all told.
