How to paint cloaks with no airbrush

Cultists,

Here is part 2 for Eltharion, but it also a generic video on how to paint cloaks with no airbrush, and hopefully some good layering tips too. It has come up a lot in discussion recently, and I realised many people were struggling with dilution and brush strokes for these things. I have tried to talk address these things in this video.

In the Lion videos we combined airbrush with brush. In this video I use just the brush, as I have a pure...

Eltharion Pt. 1 Armour

Hey Cultists!

A new series starting today, with Eltharion from the Lumineth range. In this weeks video you have painting white armour and gold. The model will also allow me to cover painting cloaks with no airbrush and some fun effects on the swords. I also hope to bring you a Lumineth army painting video, this is almost the test model to get my palette right.

By popular demand we have some metallics used. Hope you enjoy the process for those, I certainly did as a change of pace.<...

Ballsaurus Part 3

Hey Cultists!

Not too much to say on this one, it’s the final part! Mostly a lot of repetition but actually the orange transformed in this video. I really like the outcome and it shows the impact how detail changes the overall look of a piece. Lots of small brush strokes made the piece. The colours are the same as previous videos so you can refer to the paint list there!

Next week we will have some GW miniatures in the tutorials. After seeing those new Ka...

Squig Hopper Part 2

Hey Cultists!

Here is part 2 for painting the Lucas Pina Squig bust. I think there are some real key elements in this one you can apply to tons of miniatures. NMM copper, Verdigris, Horn and Mushrooms come up often! So I Hope you enjoy it. Im particularly happy with the Verdigris effect. I haven’t done it in some time and I forgot how fun it can be. The final part will be up this week too.

Lucas Pina Squig Bust Video

Hey Cultists!

Pleased to present to you this tutorial on the Lucas Pina Goblin Bust. I have painted it in a more natural way, jumping between different elements. I begin the orange, but not really got into it yet. The Leather is finished, but the skin only at 80%. I hope this is enjoyable to watch as a more real painting process. Some of this is due to having my tutorial schedule completely disrupted from GW, but also this is how I would genuinely go about it. I think once th...

Tutorial News

Hey Cultists!

Just a quick video to let you know what’s happening at the moment.

I’ll repeat what I’ve said in the video for those who prefer to read!

As some of you may know, myself and Henry are very lucky to get said products from Games Workshop early. This is how we got to do all those great Indomitus videos and the Void Dragon as some examples.

I currently have a new product on the desk, it’s a great one! I had...

A new show?!

Hi all,

Hope you're doing well. We really enjoyed doing the streams for the Deorgard campaign, and we'd been wanting to do some sort of stream for you guys too. So over the last month or so we've put together a project we think will work. Tonight we're going to record the pilot episode of Culture of Paint.

It's a youtube show where myself, Andy, our commissions head Rich, and Matt ( the brains behind the Golden Demon Compendium) discuss all things pertaining to the miniatures pain...

Happy New Year!

Just wanted to wish a happy new year to all of our Patrons. Even though we only started in May 2020, thankyou for supporting us on our first year of Patreon!

Some of you may know that Cult of Paint was primarily about face to face painting classes. With that huge part of our brand taken away, it’s been a hard year for us. It did allow us to work hard on things we wanted to do anyway, like this Patreon and the Deorgard Kickstarter. We have been pretty blown away by the response to bot...

Painting Skin with a Strong Light Source

Hey Cultists!

Hope most of you are enjoying a holiday break, and getting some painting in! I have just finished a new miniature, and thanks to the holidays it took me around 2 weeks instead of the usual 4-6 for a miniature this size. The benefit is faster tutorials!

This is the first part, where I paint the skin. I really like the result, and combining brush layering with airbrush glazes has proved to be very effective for the time. From my video you will se...

Chipping Fluid

Hi all,

I hope you've had a nice weekend. I've got an upcoming series of videos on painting a new Zone Mortalis board. In preparation for that I wanted to make a video about chipping fluid. The various types, it's limitations and how to understand and make it do what you want.

Any questions pop them in the comments.

The Lion final part: Base

Cultists,

Here we are; the final Lion Video! I really enjoyed painting this figure, more than I anticipated. I also enjoyed getting better at filming. At the beginning I found it very difficult painting on camera, but now getting used to t and improving is almost as satisfying as the painting. Better camera has been great too and I look forward to continually working on improving the standard of these tutorials.

Anyway, this week we just work on the base. It ...

The Lion Part 5: Cloak

Hey Cultists!

Final part of painting the Lion. The main focus is the cloak. I used the airbrush but honesty I think I would have preferred to use just the brush for more visible Brush strokes. So it’s up to you what you go for, but you are not at a disadvantage if you don’t own an airbrush.

As I mention I believe there are a few superfluous steps, so in the summary below I will mention those.

Tutorial for the Week

Hey all! Just a quick progress report on this weeks tutorial. It will be mostly on this cream coloured cloak for the Lion. It included mud effects (very easy), the lion fur and some other details specific for him! This will be the last episode painting him, with just the base next week. Just another day or two of painting and I’ll get that tutorial edited!

Thanks!

The Lion Part 4: Shoulder pads and Leather

Hey Cultists!

Perhaps a less exciting tutorial today, with some quite specific details for this model. The other tutorials I love as you can use them for anything. This one you can as well, but I guess the stone like texture i have gone for is less common. Anyway, another one down and the home straight for the lion. Im at that point where I am pondering the next project and what would be good for tutorials.

The Lion part 3: Black and Silver

Hey Cultists!

So a slight delay on this video because……I lost most of the footage I filmed! But fear not, this has resulted in a positive outcome! So this prompted me to get my new camera, which on a first test is a vast improvement. I lost the first couple stages of painting the black, so I re-filmed the process on the backpack with the new camera. Hope you can see it is sharper and brighter. The audio should be a little bit better with my new mic set up too. This will s...

This Weeks Tutorials

Hey all!

Anyone paint this weekend? Comment what you have been up to!

This weekend I started the black and silver for the Lion. I probably won’t finish the painting this week, but I will finish the tutorials! There is a lot of silver and black, so it will take me a while. Instead I thought I would just get the tutorial out, then take a little break to catch up on painting these parts.

We also have some more fun videos coming to YouTube, and don’t forget the live strea...

The Lion part 2: Gold!

It’s the weekend people! Hope you have some painting lined up. With the gold finished, I shall be starting the black and silver for your tutorials next week!

I am really happy with the recipe for this gold; because I feel it is easier to replicate and others I have seen and done in the past myself. You don’t need all of the colours to produce a great result like this, but it makes it easier with no mixing. This means you can adjust the approach to your skill level/confidence.

The lion NMM gold tutorial

Hey! Thought I would share today’s progress. I think I will finishing filming the gold tutorial tomorrow, and get it edited up before the weekend.

I am really happy with the result, and the recipe is simple to follow with little mixing. I hope this makes the gold easier to replicate! Hope you enjoyed part 1.
