Small Arms of WWI Primer 080: German MG08

FINALLY got this cleared.  Now I need a nap.

Or I'll just hang out on Discord and play video games before getting back to it.

On leaving WWI

Sorry to double up but I keep forgetting to make this point.

I have about a terabyte of historical footage and images all geared towards WWI and firearms from our short list.  Basically, since the beginning of this project whenever I go archive digging I haul in anything that I can identify as potentially useful in the future.  Easily I have 400 hours + in this.

Whatever I find, wherever I find it, I can use it because it is in the public domain.  The hosts usually have a...

This next episode is a heavy one

..and in trying to get it all organized an idea came to me.

We've had a bit of a catch 22 here at C&Rsenal: struggle to find a gun and shoot it.  Episode released, 3 offers to loan what we no longer need.

Also the longer we spend in WWI, the harder the pieces become to borrow and shoot.

My solution for both?  What if, when we have the opportunities, we do partial episodes of Primer?  All the research, references, images, context, animation, etc... but no shooting...

Small Arms of WWI Primer 079: Ottoman Mauser 1887

I'm honestly knee deep in Maxim script.

Tricky bit: up to page 26 on the FIRST episode on Maxim.  Problem is only 2/3rds done and it already 6 pages over our longest so far....

Minute of Mae: Revolver 1892

We've had an idea to do a brief review of each gun on the backburner for years.  Chad over at IV8888 gave me a pretty firm push and I'd be a fool to pass up good advice from an experienced hand.

So, in a format even Instagram can handle, here is Mae reviewer the Revolver 1892.

Once again, thank you all for making the show possible.

Hopefully a little exposure will go a long way to help us grow!

Goals

Throughout the growth of the show I've been very careful to maintain a professional but available demeanor.  Many, many times small emergencies and even large ones have made me feel unsettled, unsure, or just plain scared.  I have always taken a deep breath and kept it away from the audience.

But for the moment, since all of you are contributing, I want to be very honest about my personal goals in this project.

1. Document the small arms of the Great War.

It so...

Also, while I'm at it let's cover some updates.

I'm currently finishing repairs on an 08 and Jeff from the Lewis Gun episode has sent over a Hotchkiss 1914 and is shipping the final bits I need for the Maxim.  Thanks Jeff

The MP18 was going to go in for rewat this week but sadly the motor burned out on the lathe.  So... gotta take care of that.

We have two Chauchats with Mark for repair, but both are proving to be challenges.

If all goes well, we're ...

What you can do

Sorry for startling everyone!  The show is still very solid and growing.

Some of you were kind enough to up your donations but I assure you it's not something I'd ask for!  $1 is enough.

The biggest help for C&Rsenal at this phase is public awareness.  Share the videos, share the images, follow the social media, etc.  Tell others it's worth supporting.   Show us to collectors and museums and potential advertisers/loaners (Simpson? Collectors?)...

Updates: Hail Mary

Unfortunately it looks like I won't be able to squeeze in a machine gun episode.  Some mechanical issues have tied us down just a few days too long to make it happen without my hair falling out.

However, a big part of this is because an opportunity opened to do a collab with another Southeastern channel.  So stay tuned there.

As for the future:  As of right now I have not heard anything back from the  Time Ghost WWII project in terms of licensing help with ...

Bloke is back. Sorta.

After a lot of attention Bloke recreceived some sort of manual review and his channel is back up. However, he did receive a strike on one video: loading metallic cartridges for the 1866 Chassepot.

YouTube did, essentially, ban all handloading videos in their new policy roll out. BUT as with so many of these sorts of changes people believed it was targeted despite the broad language. It has been recommended we go ahead and do our handloading series because it is unlikely we will be punished. Un...

In Better News : We Designed for Taofledermaus

Jeff over at Taofledermaus has been a HUGE supporter of the Primer series and repeatedly exposed us to his much larger audience.  As a thank you Mae and I helped put together a poster for his channel, the C&Rsenal way.  Being too gracious, he's offered to share the proceeds.

If you happen to be a fan of Tao's, go nuts.  If not we just thought it was fun to show off how well the community works together.

Bloke on the Range YouTube Account Terminated

Hello everyone,

I promised to stay politically neutral with the show BUT still update you with matters that may affect our production.  Right now we are carefully watching the termination of Bloke on the Range's account.

Before anyone reacts, however, it is best to understand how and why the incident happened.  In all likelihood this is part of a poorly configured automated process.  Whatever the case, C&Rsena...

The Peerless and a 1917 Carbine

You guys have had access to this video for a while now but I suppose over a year is enough lead time.

The Peerless is over at the print shop if you're interested.

Opinions : Spoilers

1. We've had a little project going with Manticore Arms to recreate a prototype Remington 11 trenchgun.

Somewhere in this process they realized they would like to sponsor the show.  We could use the help, the show does not overlap with sales of anything modern so there is no risk of bias, and they have given us zero hooks/demands.

What do you guys think?

2. I planned a Mauser 1871 episode followed by a 71/84 and 1887 episode.  that's two episod...

Q&Arsenal

All right gang, the moment is here.  Hopefully not a complete disappointment.

This time saved has allowed us to settle a number of issues that have been tying up production.  We're planning to start back up in 2 weeks with a deeper dive on the Mausers.

Submissions over

OK guys I've pulled the questions from the old thread.

Some were a bit specific or vaguely overlapped other questions, and we have a bit of a time limit.  So I'm sorry to say not EVERYTHING will be addressed in one go.

But we have a lot to answer.  We'll get filming and drop it on Tuesday.

Anyone have comic/artbook experience?

Bruno found an illustrator who had worked up a series of fantasy Great War guns. They were so thoughtful I realized that I might now have an opportunity to share a number of guns we would have no chance of photographing for a book.

Now, of course, you have to weigh business relationships before going crazy all in. So I commmissioned a fantasy piece made of actua...

Sometimes you keep your head down for so long you don't realize just how much work you've done.  Without the high speeds and targets we've still managed over 1.5 hours in our shooting segments alone!

Thank you all for the support, we would have NEVER made it this far without it.

Bonus: check out how many copyright claims on all public domain recordings!

Skipping

The Primer series is constrained by 3 factors:

1. My skill as a researcher and administrator

2. The Budget

3. Time

When we started the show the emphasis was on #3.  I just burned hundreds of hours to get it done, brute forcing my way through software I barely understood.

As we've grown I've gotten better at planning and execution.  YOU patrons brought in #2 (not YouTube advertising) and it's been huge because that gave us Bruno, and room to subsidize M...

A New Site

The old C&Rsenal site just isn't cutting it.  Too ad-hoc and confusing.  But there are a number of articles people still reference so I can't just take it down.

Well, I have an old domain handy; so for now I'm building up the new C&Rsenal site, with gallery and print shop, contact forms, etc... on the spare.  Once ready I'll swap the domains, so the old article site can still be referenced at Surplused.com.

As part of this I'll also release a new print, to encourag...
