DEV WORK AND STUFF | "Princess Skystar Sea Pone"

THE BRIEF

As per the 'Open Poll | MLP Character #1' I chose the sweet Princess Skystar in her cute mermaid pone form.

I wanted to step away from my lineart style and attempt a painting.

THE STARTING SKETCHES

Unfortunately I missed the very early start of this sketch. It was much rougher than the image below, but it followed the same flow and ...

DEV WORK AND STUFF | MLEM Hug

You gotta love this big tentacle face thing. He is uber cute and MLEMly (is that a word? It is now?).

Details

Non picking up/cuddling lock down, lock obviously complaining but not doing much against it because he secretly likes the attention.

Blocking It Out

Because Non Toxic is HUGE compared to Lock Down, I had to make a composition that would fit them both nicely. I opted to make Non Toxic acting more li...

RESOURCE STUFF | Line art on the Background Layer

You open up Photoshop, you set your canvas up and you draw the most stunning line art you have ever drawn. You complete your masterpiece and it is now ready to colour.

Then it dawns on you. The one thing that all artists have struggled with.

Not to worry there is a very easy fix. This method can be applied to scanned traditional sketches or inks as well.

SKETCHES AND STUFF | Giddy Up Up Animation

I felt like animating something small. Happy little Graphite Sketch trot.

Version 1.

4 Frames | Blocking out the keyframes.

Version 2.

8 Frames | More of a cleaner transition from left to right. Looks more like a hop, rather than a step.

RESOURCE STUFF | Paint Bucket/Fill Tool

My father always told while I was growing up; 'Work smart not hard.'

You may find some artist get a tiny bit precious about the Paint Bucket Tool. Either lazy or it makes the edges look terrible or somewhere in between.

Lazy, I can not agree with. It is quicker to fill an area in one click, then it is to colour with a brush. That is not lazy, it is efficient.

DEV WORK AND STUFF | Halloween Oppression

This was a commission of the one and only Lock Down.

Sketching

In the sketch phase I m pretty loose with my line work. In this version of Lock Down he was a foal who was Trick or Treating wearing an oversized Royal Guard armour set. I wanted to get the foal proportions right so that he looked young and not just shorter.

Babies have bigger heads, eyes. Foals have longer legs and shorter necks.

DEV WORK AND STUFF | Disco Heat Bard

Disco Heat Bard Redesign Print

It's no secret that I love League of Legends (LoL). So it would not be a shock that I would also follow other LoL content creators. Disco Heat is one of them. For reasons that require far, far, FAR too much context and stuff I will keep it as simple as I can.

I was tasked to complete a hi-res print of Disco Bard. This character is a redesign of a Bard, a support character from LoL. The redesign is based and themed around the Sylvest...
