Here's a look at my process in painting this. Once the sketch, colors, and values are figured out, I merge all the layers (background stays a separate layer from figure) and just start painting directly onto my merged layer. Near the end I was feeling like something was missing and the image felt unbalanced, so I added that chair with the clothes draped over it, in front of him. I think it helped.
