Girl Genius Comic for Friday, January 15, 2021

Our Christmas tree is still up. I need to take it down. It's been such a comforting thing to see every day, I don't think I've ever enjoyed a Christmas tree more. On a side note, I am always grateful to the people who leave their lights up into January. It's still dark and cold, and sometimes I really need those lights in the dark.

So, the tree: I watered it regularly, so it's only now getting a bit dry. Yesterday, to my delight, we noticed that it now has tiny, pinhead-sized baby spide...

Girl Genius Comic for Wednesday, January 13, 2021

Hello! I do like to get the page posted by nine Pacific, to match with midnight on the East Coast, but today was my birthday and things ran a bit later than planned. (I got a lot of nice presents, including a very large orb weaver spider.) Plus, this was one of those pages where we "know what happens, but don't have all the words done ahead of time." So there was some writing involved.

I included the last panel without words, because I thought you might like to see what got covered up. ...

Tsk. One really shouldn't just do whatever the voices say, it rarely ends well.

(And yes, I'm aware that it ended IN the well, which is not quite the same thing.)

Oh noooo! Play stupid games, win stupid prizes, right? Nobody ever accused our Professoressa of being terribly clever.

We just finished getting all the interior illustrations to Steve Jackson Games for the Girl Genius GURPS book. This is a huge deal for us, and we are very happy about it!

Now that this page is up, I'm back to working on BackerKit for Sparks and Monsters, as well as those pdfs that I promised everyone. That's a really good thing too, because one of them (the ...

Yup. I've got nothing useful to say tonight. I'm still pulling art for the interior of the Girl Genius GURPS expansion, it's taking forever to dig through my files. Victor did the hard work, choosing which art to use, but good heavens am I ever slow at finding it all. Now that I've got tonight's page up, I'll get back to it. I should be done in another hour or so, and then I can move on to the next thing that's on fire!

Good night!

Hello everyone, and Happy New Year!

I'm posting early this time, in case everyone is busy tomorrow. I know I will be, there should be fireworks in both Orgrimmar and Doomtown (my Animal Crossing town), and I'd hate to miss them. Such a wild life I lead!

The colors for the previous page are now up, and I've included the whole thing so you can see it in all its glory. Many thanks to Cheyenne for all the work he put into this one!

Ok, This page is taking Cheyenne a while longer than usual, because, well, look at it. It's totally our fault. So here's the black and white for you folks, and I'll update it to color when I've got it. (Everybody else will have to wait a bit. The colors are looking lovely, I promise!)

Thanks for reading Girl Genius!

--Kaja

Edit: I'll leave the black and white underneath when I do, so you can see both together.

Edit Edit: Colors are up, and aren't they nice? Thanks Chey...

Merry Christmas and Glad Yule to everyone who is celebrating, and a Very Happy Weekend to all!

I'm off to make as many of my Grandma's Christmas cookies as I can before dinner, and maybe some rømmegrøt if I really feel like getting fatter.

Thank you, everyone!

It's fun to write the Castle proper again!

Thanks for reading, everybody, I'm off to get all the last-minute Christmas stuff sorted out!

Well, here's Friday's page! It took forever to letter. There's always a bit of rewriting when I do the lettering, but every so often I get a page that gets almost completely rewritten at the lettering stage, and this is one of them.

I do love that fancy outfit the Exceedingly Worthy Doctor has on.

Have a happy weekend!

Tonight I have an extra for you, Phil's costume sketch for our newest addition to the shady world of Mechanicsburg bureaucracy.

Things are chugging along here at the Foglio Atelier, my Mom has been over finishing the Pins and Patches shipments for the Queens and Pirates Kickstarter. We've shipped everything except about twenty rewards that require charms that turned out to be on the other side of the country. So when those get here, we'll pack up the last of it and have cak...

Our Professoressa is not the most...ethical of scholars.

I haven't got much to say about this one, I don't want to give too much away, although I'm sure a few of you are already suspicious about where this is going.

Did I mention that I really love cathedrals? The best ones are so chock full of monsters.

Thank you, everyone!

Augh, I am running so late tonight. Here's the latest page in our heartwarming holiday story!

I thought those kids were asleep. Guess they woke 'em up to see the fun.

Phil drew something neat today, I want to show it to you folks, but we need permission from the client first. Something to look forward to.

Happy Weekend!

p.s. Small Jägermonster translation for panel one: Oggie says "Be right back--unless I am boring you with this long story."

See? The cliffhangers aren't always on Fridays!

I'm kind of sad that our flashbacks are always in brown tones, because I'd really like to see that street parade in color. The "Heterodyne's" antlers are on fire, for one thing. Phil says he wants to do a tourism poster, so I'm looking forward to that.

Someday when there isn't a plague and I have lots of money I would love to travel around Europe and see the various monster-y festivals. Next life, maybe.

Also, the Professoressa...

Somewhat early today!

The Jäger dialect is horrendous, because I always have to walk a fine line between sticking to "proper form" and making it actually somewhat understandable. To add to the confusion, Phil writes is a little differently than I do. Regional dialects, I guess. Just assume that they're old guys who are still putting on the accents of their youth because who's going to stop them.

I wonder what the contests with "Lots of Biting" were. Maybe the Professoressa ...

Hello again!

I think they should take the booze away from the Professoressa, but nobody listens to me.

I asked Phil why the Professor was still wearing his hat indoors, and he pointed out that it's a Jäger's party, so of course everyone is wearing a hat? I guess that makes sense.

So about fifteen or so years ago, Payne told us about the Namahage, a scary Japanese oni who goes from door to door during New Year's to ask if the children inside have been being good and do...

I'm not early at all tonight, but you do get to see the Lost Dragon picture right away, now that it's colored! Where could he be?

My Mom was here late working through the last of the Queens and Pirates pin shipments, so we bought her pizza, and things went late. We still have a few left to pack, but we're getting to the end.

Here's Oggie with his family, he's kind of like an ancient Vampire Lord watching over his descendants, but without all the angst and blood drinking. Well, wai...

Hey there, everyone! We've been wanting to do this story for around 15 years now, and never quite wrapped our minds around it, so here goes nothing. I'll tell you a little more about it as we go along, but I don't want to give too much away. For now, I'll just say that it takes place after the main story, (Agatha survives! Huge spoiler!) and that Oggie is a little weird as Jägers go (which you also knew.) Apparently, the dinosaur people from the lands beneath Paris have accepted the reality ...

I was up far too late last night, making pie and writing an update for Kickstarter and answering messages and prepping this page. Here it is, much earlier than usual because tonight is Thanksgiving here in the US.

It turns out the cover templates the printer gave me were samples, and not the actual ones I needed for this specific job, so now I have to retool the covers for Sparks and Monsters. On the bright side, the new printers are really nice and answer questions right away, so they're good to work with.

So...I think the problem with the site is repaired, but I'm not 100% sure. I'm going to leave this post locked for Patrons Only, and see if I hear from anybody. I'll open it up again if it looks like we still have work to do.

I've attached a secondary piece tonight, Phil has drawn another dragon. He's a little hard to spot. I think this one is an interesting color challenge, and I'm excited to see what Cheyenne does with it. I'm sure it'll be amazing.

I'm looking forward to seeing Karl in his stabilized form. Interesting fact, Karl Thotep was originally supposed to be a character in a gothic horror-themed story we abandoned a couple of decades ago. It's fun to have a place to put him now.

Super early today! Whee! I'm also including Vol.19 page 51, (20190114) because we re-wrote panel three and I thought you all might like to see the new bit. The old panel was a joke that just didn't make any sense, and I was tired that night and didn't question it until I looked at it for the print volume. Eh. It happens, I guess.

Yes! I am quite early today, and feeling pleased about it. That gives me time to leave a few notes about today's page.

So, that's Neena, the princess Tarvek was dancing with back at the ball. She's a very hands-on fan of museums, so she gets into a lot of trouble with the curators. I'm quite fond of her. I'm not going to spoil the next page though, so what Zeetha is looking at is still a secret-ish type of thing. You'll find out on Friday!
